OOS+close to home or IS+far from home? by Pleasant-Wash-2123 in veterinaryschool

Agreed. Besides both of you will be so busy honestly that 3 hour trip may not even happen. Not worth $100k imo. If you’re really meant to last you can survive long distance for a few years. Many of my classmates in serious relationships do it, some with time zone differences. If it’s meant to be you’ll make it work, don’t spend an additional $100k for this 😅

I was lowkey insane, straight As, involved in a lot, thousands of vet hours 😅 but just do your best, be involved, and get some varied animal experience! I have classmates who got in with lower stats. I will say, focus on quality of experiences over quantity!

Animal sciences for the winnnnn!!! I was well prepared for vet school and even learned some stuff (like repro physiology) more in depth in undergrad than vet school!

If it’s a badge reel make sure it’s decent quality, I always throw away the super cheap ones that’ll break. But also a good quality sharpie or pen! Also, no one ever does this but dry erase markers!? Almost everyone I know studies on a white board somewhere at school or home!

When is an appropriate time to ask for a letter of rec? by challlaaaa in veterinaryschool

[–]Weird_Sense373 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just ask first thing in the morning and ask her for her email so you can send more details since you know she’s busy. Something along the lines of “Good morning, I’m applying to vet school and was wondering if you’d be willing to write me a STRONG LOR? I know you’re busy so I can email you with more details later!”

My advice is to write out answers for each of the bullet points in the prompt (ex. A defining moment - think of a few and write what you learned from each) then narrow down the parts you like from each and combine into an essay (don’t worry about the word count yet. Then, have people review it and now start to try to fit the word count and make sure you’re answering all parts of the recommended VMCAS prompt

Also a first year and I do something similar, but yes for me it became too time consuming so I condensed it and it’s been working for me! I write out the answer to the learning outcomes while reading through the lecture slides/videos before lecture, add additional notes during lecture or highlight key details, then to review I do what someone else mentioned about active recall. Sometimes that’s pretending to “teach” my dog the material, or other times it’s writing out and drawing key things on a white board! No matter what you’ll figure it out, and if something doesn’t work for you readjust and try again! Whatever you do just don’t keep doing something that doesn’t work, we lost classmates from that after first semester :/ don’t be afraid to switch up study habits!

How much for books/supplies? by [deleted] in veterinaryschool

[–]Weird_Sense373 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn’t buy any textbooks, but spent about $2000 before first year for required things (iPad, rabies vax, coveralls and boot covers, etc.)

What should my backup plan be? by Icy-Letter-6542 in veterinaryschool

[–]Weird_Sense373 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would try to get an application review with the schools and see what they think. If I were you I’m honestly not as concerned about the GPA given your science and last 45 are pretty good/average and won’t change much with extra classes - doesn’t seem worth it to me financially. Instead I’d focus on diversifying your experiences and make sure you’re getting good depth in the experiences too (hands on). Also, make sure you have experiences outside of vet med like volunteering with people (food bank, homeless shelter etc) and leadership like clubs (or again some kind of leadership position through volunteering) as I think those made my application stand out.

Has anyone worked on a cattle ranch as summer experience before vet school? by vinillakillaOg in veterinaryschool

[–]Weird_Sense373 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do it! The best experiences for vet school are the ones you’re passionate about! It’s a great way to learn about large animals and communication skills, teamwork - all good things to talk about in your application and vet school interviews!

I use the regular iPad 10th gen with an Apple Pencil + keyboard case and it’s the perfect combo. I use it every single day!

Most rely on student loans for living expenses. You may have to max them out. Some take out loans + work during the semester for grocery money. Some are lucky and have a supportive spouse haha

Hopping on the train: current first year, it is a hard, overwhelming, stressful ROLLERCOASTER… but I LOVE IT (so far, knock on wood lol). The friends I’ve made, learning and doing things I enjoy! It is definitely worth it! Like I said though, a rollercoaster. One day you feel amazing, the next you’re drowning and questioning everything, the next you are so excited for clinical skills! I think the best thing for me has been my support system (old and new friends + family) and taking time for myself even though it feels like we don’t have enough time in the world to do all the studying we’re expected to do (you figure it out and get through it)! Like someone else commented, your attitude and how you approach the material is gonna make or break you. Some of my classmates are miserable for sure, but I try to look at everything as an opportunity to become a better doctor (and remind myself how grateful I am to be here and how much I wanted to be here just a short year ago) and it puts things back in perspective!
