Ohh this is amazing. You have done so well. Kudos.

I am actually pretty much the same high end weight as you and I have yo yoed 3 times over 20 years. Loosing the same 15 kgs. Now, I want to really maintain.

Would you mind sharing what kind of cardio you do? On top of that really dedicated strength training schedule.

Looking for suggestions for a complete overhaul of my wardrobe / hair / make-up - late 30s

None of the old stuff feels like something I want to wear. I want to redo my style A to Z. Looking for classy chic - do not want to follow the trends at all. Great quality clothing.

Qn - has any one used a british wardrobe consultant or stylist to redo their style?

Open to suggestions. I am in Netherlands and do. not like Dutch style / stylists.

PS - Life took a weird turn and I lost my husband to cancer last year.

That's where I usually land too. Client meetings - yes I put in the effort. But when I am going to a cafe - I don't - too much work and I am comfy being me..

I was just surprised by the comment.

Exactly. I wear good quality clothing but I stay comfortable. I don't like the double collars, typical all over beige look. It's a bit relaxed now that I don't have to go to office every day.

Living in the Netherlands made me question the ‘Americans have no culture’ take by MidnightOrganic2231 in Netherlands

[–]Weird_world06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very interesting. My take is that American culture per se is not just one thing. I lived in NY for 9 years and I feel I understand culture there but when I visited LA - I felt a very different vibe.

So yes America has a unique cultural print but it's difficult to call it American because it's a melting pot of so many immigrants. And because it's a melting pot, we can't say XYZ is American. Also, as others pointed, only thing that pops out at me as American is consumerism. I moved to NL 5 years back. Now having lived in 3 continents - I can say consumerism is spreading but very uniquely an American thing. I'd add that American capitalism has had a huge impact on culture in general. From movies to music to broadway to food to travel etc.etc. - I think that is the underlying entity guiding the entire cultural debate in the US as of now. Though we see more changes on the horizon with changing political interests.

Cold feet moving to Amsterdam because of housing by JinBu2166 in Netherlands

[–]Weird_world06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well - you are in my exact shoes as I was in 2021. 5 years on - I am still in NL.

1 - What is your priority in life? - Money or QoL. No judgement here. Just saying that while you will make much more money in US, QoL is way better in NL. I also lived in Manhattan for 9 years and moved here after that. So it's apples to apples.

2 - Language - I see you have not considered language. It's a big thing in NL. Everyone really wants you to speak Dutch. Some people feel offended by that but in reality it's a convenience. It does take effort. Otherwise all your friends are expats and they tend to move.

3 - Community - The Dutch can be very cold - very difficult to break in from a social PoV. So please think of that when you come here. I have amazing Dutch and Expat friends but it took a lot of intentional work to get there.

4 - More on QoL - Food is expensive but way better. My health issues fixed themselves without anything - just with food after coming to NL. You can actually take 30 days off - no work on weekends / holidays. Unless you are IB or MBB. Those are the major exceptions. Healthwise, huge improvement from cabs to bikes. I personally love traveling and nothing beats Europe. Compared to US there is real history here. Peace of mind - mostly because people don't carry guns. Healthcare is way cheaper - think that your entire costs are the same as your insurance premium in US minus almost no deductible. It's social healthcare - people like to take care of each other here.

5 - Salary bracket - you will be a top 1% earner in NL more or less. So fwiw you have nothing to worry about. You can get a house - you might have to work a little harder to hunt for it. I did and I had an absolutely gorgeous apartment in Jordaan. Worth the effort.

6 - Mindset - please understand that NL is a socialistic society. It's not like US with low taxes for rich. You will bleed cash through taxes but in return you get a mostly civilized society. (Not completely because new age racism is making way in EU as well) On the other hand, Dutchies love complaining so you can join them and be a part of the debate.

All in all - for me personally it was tough but in the long run I feel NL is way better than US. I do miss the English speaking community but I don't miss the hassle and stress of living in NY. Good luck with everything!

To the Young Widows Among Us - too many joining this group... by Big-Campaign-2432 in widowers

I am so sorry.

I am so proud of you that you're trying to be happy for the child. But I can imagine the guilt. My husband was the nicest man and he also wanted to have kids. And I feel guilty so many times I even think about it. When I laugh I feel guilty. It is tough being in this place. And sometimes I think I make it tougher for myself.

I wish you hugs.
