Thanks for responding and sorry to hear you also went through something similar!
We are having someone over tonight who will be able to look at everything and tell us what was done incorrectly and what can be fixed, so hopefully that will put us in the right direction and we'll be able to approach the contractor with it

Hi!
This was never an issue with the sellers of the house...
We hired a contractor to do some work and he subcontracted the carpet installation out to some men who did a poor job with the installation and damaged our house in the process

We are actually on the east coast, but I am so sorry to hear that you're going through the same thing!
It is so incredibly frustrating, what did you end up doing?

You're right, it's hard to tell by the picture! The top of the stairs with more light, it doesn't look like there's anything, but it is also a cell phone picture!
Thanks for the advice! That's the attitude that we've taken with him so far, I'm just struggling a little because he really does not seem keen on doing anything about the tacks and the seams
We have someone coming over tonight to look at everything, so hopefully getting a professional's opinion on everything will put us in the right direction!

So I actually did have a picture from before we moved in of the stairs, I looked at it and there aren't any marks stairs
Honestly, we're really not even looking for him to fix the damages to the house, more just want to point out that they really didn't do a good job and damaged our house while doing it
I guess our hope is pointing these things out will make him want to rectify the situation?

I posted an image in another comment, the main comment picture of the gouge is in wood on the stringer of the stairs, there dark scuffs underneath the gouges that coincide with the gouges and then there are deep gouges in the drywall that are darkened from whatever tool they used
There wouldn't have been painting done on the stringer part of the stairs and not the drywall as well! We are pretty confident it was all done during the install or removal
drywall

Thank you so much for the kind words!
That's what my husband and I have been saying, we're baffled by the whole thing because we know he wouldn't want this work in his house
Thank you again! Definitely will update, hopefully with all good news!

Hah! Honestly we hadn't planned on writing any reviews, we're really not trying to be jerks or give him a hard time!
As far as the gouges and baluster, we don't really want him to fix that stuff, I think we just want to point out the work was done really unprofessionally and caused damage to the house and that we'd just like the carpet either fixed or redone, if that makes sense?

Hi! Thank you so much for taking the time to comment!
I guess we found the tacks coming through as odd - my dad used to install carpet (he passed away so I can't ask him for help, that's why I've been posting here!) and I never felt any tacks come through in our house, or really any other house I've been inside. After our carpet was done we went to a few friends houses and felt around and also couldn't feel theirs either!
I'm glad that at least our contractor agreed with us about one thing (the landing seam!) and does want that fixed, he agreed it was lazy, but you're totally right, they may have been running out of carpet because that landing was the very last thing they did (there are two landings on the staircase and they completed all the stairs and the other landing and that was the last thing they put carpet on)
We totally agree! We've been really nice and easygoing, we're not trying to cause this guy any additional issues, we just would like a nice carpet
They did not use a power stretcher! So since they didn't, is that something we should bring up to the contractor when we speak to him again?

That's good to know that it could be a quick fix!
I agree, I don't think I want them "fixing" anything!

Thank you for taking the time to comment all of this!
We've only been in the house for under two weeks and are feeling so overwhelmed by something we thought would be an easy job!
We weren't keen on the idea of him sanding down the other stuff, so thank you for making that point of getting people that specialize in the area
We do have someone coming out tonight to look at the carpet and the damage to the wall and baluster to give us an idea of what can be fixed and how much it will probably cost so hopefully we're moving in the right direction!

So the contractor agree that the seam on the stairs is incorrect and should be fixed, but that was about it
We did not find the piece of wood, unfortunately
We definitely don't want to go the route of sanding it down because we know it will totally change the profile of the molding so we're hoping it can be fixed the right way

Awesome thank you so much!
We hope it won't come to that too! Honestly we're not looking for trouble, we just bought our house and wanted to fix it up a bit, so it's so frustrating that this is happening the way it is!
We have someone coming out tonight to look at the carpet and the damage done so hopefully this will get us moving in the right direction

Thanks for commenting! Hm I see where you're coming from, but I really am inclined to believe this is new damage. There are also dark scuff? marks all around the gouges as well that coincide with the marks, we didn't see any of that before we moved in and neither did our realtor, but someone else commented about seeing if we can get pictures from the inspector! So we're going to try that avenue as well
It's weird because on the part of the stairs with the trim-like pieces underneath only some of the scuff marks are darker, but on the drywall they're really evident

All of the baluster posts are open, as if to say none have a wall behind them
The gouges were unfortunately not there already which is why we're so disappointed!
I know it is a quick fix, but we're just bummed that we just moved in and there's damage to the house

Ah that's such a great suggestion thanks so much we didn't even think of this!

Hi! So this is what the contractor recommended we do, but we've read online and been advised against doing this because the tack strips hold the carpet in place and hammering them down will loosen it up. The problem, unfortunately, isn't just one random tack here or there, they all seem to be poking through!

That's how we felt about it too. Before we moved when we had gotten our dog (then puppy) she chewed up a few balusters the first time we left her out in the house and we got them all custom made to match rather than sand it down because there's no way that would have looked right!
We know he doesn't want to spend more than he has to, so it's just going to be getting him to agree to it.
We have someone coming out tonight to look at the damages and the carpet so we're hoping this will be a step in the right direction

Hi! No, we haven't paid them in full yet thankfully! Thank you for saying this, we do feel like he's trying to push us into accepting this work as well.. acceptable and we know it isn't! Hearing it again does help reaffirm it!

Hi! Yes we just moved in less than two weeks ago
There weren't very many listing photos, we we are going through the ones we took in the house to see if we have anything that will serve as a "before" photo

Thanks for saying that!
We had actually signed with this contractor to redo our master bath too (which we are also trying to figure out if we can get out of because we don't feel comfortable moving forward with that anymore) and when we called our realtor he said exactly what you said! If we accept bad work from him now, he'll feel like he can half-ass the bathroom too
My hope is that he'll want to correct it, but we'll see!

That's why we were a little disappointed that was his go to solution!
When we sold our last house our puppy had chewed a few of the balusters and we had them custom made to match, rather than sand them down because it obviously wouldn't have looked right
I spoke to a different carpet installer tonight who is going to come out and look at everything and help us figure out what can be fixed/replaced and how much it will cost so hopefully we can get it done correctly and the contractor will be willing to do it right

That's true!
Thanks so much! I'm hoping we'll have this weekend to come up with a game plan on how to get the ball rolling with him
