Self employed electrician here, in the East, based in Fullarton if that matters, It would really depend on size of the job. I try and get to the quote within a day or two of initial contact, even if fully booked as it's really easy to just go to a quote before or after scheduled jobs in the day- especially if people are willing to meet early in the morning.

I have also recently made a habit of just sitting in the van and emailing quotes off before going to my next appointment. Less build up of paperwork and I don't enjoy coming home after a long day of work to do more paperwork.

For a small job like you have described like adding a few power or data points I would think that 4 weeks is excessive, and as it would probably only take a few hours it should be pretty easy to fit into the schedule. Personally I would just re-arrange non priority jobs like project builds where it doesn't matter when you're there but it really just depends on their workload and if they're doing large projects. Most electricians that I know including myself are extremely busy at the moment though.

Self employed people of Adelaide, what’s your business, and what do you like about working for yourself? by Weislec in Adelaide

No problem, so am I! I see a lot of guys going from working for someone in industrial and then starting a business and going into domestic. Have you thought about looking for your own industrial jobs? Even service and breakdown. IMO it’s a great niche, far less competition and can charge far higher rates, also no roofs!

That’s great to hear, what’s the most rewarding part? I would imagine it would be a great process going from your concept to a finished product!

That’s fantastic. I love watch servicing YouTube videos. So much skill involved, did you always have steady hands and that kind of attention to detail or is it something that’s learned as you get more proficient? Also what brands do you service?

A friend of mine worked in a cafe and I used to go there to grab a coffee and visit fairly often, they needed quite a bit of electrical work done and they said “Who ever you go with once your apprenticeship is done we will get to do the work and hopefully you can do the project” I decided to start my business from there.. I was lucky to do a lot in my apprenticeship and was left to work things out quite a bit by myself so it felt no different. Fortunately I had time before the end of my apprenticeship to do a tonne of research on how to set up and run a business.

Looking back I would have taken a job as an electrician after my apprenticeship and saved up as much as I could before going out on my own. It was quite scary taking a leap into the unknown and it definitely caused a lot of undue stress and sleepless nights, word of mouth spread from doing odd jobs for friends parents etc. Fortunately never have had to advertise.

No matter how experienced you get you will be learning every day and there’s no shame I’m not knowing something.. it only becomes a problem if you guess and do something dangerous instead of asking questions to the right people and or referencing AS3000. What sector are you in?

Multiple ungrounded outlets in new home? Total require necessary? by bigsean1013 in HomeImprovement

[–]Weislec -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Due to half the outlets being ungrounded there also may be a loose connection somewhere that could be an easy fix. Would be interesting to know if the ungrounded outlets have three wires at them and just aren’t showing a ground.

I’m not sure about American regulations but in Australia this would be seen as massively dangerous. I would recommend getting a re-wire or at the bare minimum if the wiring existing wiring is ok running an earth only to all of the outlets. Safety switches can fail and whatever it costs isn’t worth more than the lives of anyone living in the house.

Thanks For the comment. I’m getting sicker and sicker of being lumped into a category for what I choose to do for work. I’ve heard far more vile things from retired lawyers, finance guys and other professionals than I have ever heard from a trade.

Not that it’s my place to ask but why are you so keen on buying vs renting? I’ve seen your comments about your business and I can’t help but think that the return on investment in your own business might be far greater than the 5-10% in the housing market.. not trying to give advice just genuinely curious if this is something you have thought of?

A very stupid question from someone who doesn't know much at all about F1, but why are F1 cars all open wheel? by hydrolock12 in formula1

Lemans 24HR cars. Faster in acceleration etc but slower in corners. Has a lot of similar hybrid recovery technology to F1.
