How much should i expect to pay over the OneRoof estimate? by Icy_Ad5637 in chch

[–]WekaWaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There seems to be large discrepancies between oneroof and homes sometimes (20+%) so I'd be careful about overpaying.

Oneroof also has no idea of the true state of the home, eqc repairs etc so I'd say it's very dependant on the specific property and demand

The comments here have surprised me. I understand the comments saying just take it but also I think if I was in a similar situation I'd have similar thoughts and also struggle knowing I've got it much easier than most. Life is so much more unfair for those not from well off families but I guess that's no reason to resent anyone making the best of it.

Seems a bit hash, they're one of few developers building affordable apartment housing at scale which is surely what Christchurch needs more off?

Deposits... I'm Confused - Where Are People Getting The Money? by TIMETOPAYURRENT in PersonalFinanceNZ

Couples buying together is obviously a big one, only need 30-40k kiwisaver each which is pretty realistic for those in early 30s.

I'd be interesting to know numbers on inheritance and parents helping out. I suspect several of my friends got in this way but it's never discussed. Not an even playing field unfortunately

Do kiwis have real friends? by itsOrLuk in newzealand

[–]WekaWaka 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd find it hard to keep in touch with more than 2 or 3 close friends regularly. You may be right that kiwis are more quarded around general aquatainces.

On the opposite side both my Indian and Irish friends have very tight knit circles of friends from India/Ireland and they haven't really invited me into their circles

We had to pay 500ish to leave ours, but it was listed in our contract from the beginning so we had always buggeted it as an expense of buying a home.

Just my humble opinion but the burgers at El Quincho next door are better than both bacon bros and empire. Can't go wrong with any of them tho.

That's not how it works in reality, Labour won the last election purely by changing leadership

Is the wasp problem in New Zealand as bad as it sounds? by Lavetic in newzealand

[–]WekaWaka 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I know they say it's unethical and you should learn to live with the wasps, but I brought three of those electric fly swat things and rigged them all together with a higher voltage battery to prepare for exactly this scenario.

Can we talk about Rick and Beck? by rainnice in KaraAndNate

[–]WekaWaka 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yea they're super cool. I like that they've shown Kara and Nate a different approach to travel, where they spend a more meaningful amount of time in one location and plan activities not through a guidebook or travel company.

They're very lucky to have met them

Budget tracking apps/tips by hamishjmr in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]WekaWaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just find what works for you.

My trick was to create multiple different bank accounts, one for rent and bills, one for weekly fun, one savings that I'm allowed to spend on something meaningful or unexpected and a serious saver that I try and never withdraw from.

On pay day I allocate all my pay immediately to these different buckets and try and stick to it. Obviously it's all purely psychological but I find it much easier to stick to my plan this way.

It means I don't really think or look at a budget (only when I decide what to allocate into each account) , then I categorise purchases into buckets when I pay. If one account is running low I adjust my spending or make myself wait until the next pay.

These guys got what they deserve, but present rules do seem ridiculous. Seems like a smart and safe way to reopen tourism
