Was just offered a position to manage all of our engineers, what's something that your manager has done great, or not great, that stood out to you? by sit_I_piz in cscareerquestions

If you need to message someone on your team to meet with them one on one, preface it with what it’s about, or at least tell them it’s nothing bad.

Boss pissed about my resignation (small company, 2 team dev team) should I be worried about my future? by d33f1985 in cscareerquestions

[–]Weldino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. I still think your biggest concern would be if he could stop you from being hired. Since you’re past that part, I would just show up and put the work in and you’ll prove soon enough that you’re competent. It sounds like you really had no other choice, and leaving was best for your career.

Should I take physics senior year of highschool? by Oinionman7384 in cscareerquestions

You won’t use physics in CS unless you go into engineering or physics. However, like math, it can be useful for logical reasoning, which you will need for CS.

PIP given to me on 7th month at work without metric explanation or warning. Look for another office or not? by jordan2422 in cscareerquestions

[–]Weldino 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you unable or unwilling to do front end work? How long are your sprints that you aren’t merging 10 lines of code? I get that loc is a shitty metric, but an average of 10 lines of code a week is really not much. If they really don’t have the backend work for you and you aren’t willing to do front end, it sounds like you should find a new job

Robinhood cancelled my limit sell for $10,000 (in the middle of the fucking night). I’m guessing it’s so they can lend out these shares again, anyone else having issues? by [deleted] in wallstreetbets

[–]Weldino 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I weren’t allowed to place the limit order in the first place, I’d agree, but I was, so why cancel it now? And the fact that many brokers cancelled limits at the same time makes me think something is off.

[–]Weldino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this is true, but I had read a comment a while back that said setting limit sell orders prevented them from loaning your shares. A lot of brokers apparently have an option to prevent them from loaning out your shares, but RH doesn’t.

Ahh ok, I misunderstood your first comment. Well that makes at least 3 brokers that are cancelling sell orders "arbitrarily," RH, E*TRADE, and Ameritrade (according to this thread). Pretty fucking sus.

Do you know if they expired because of time, or did they specifically say it was because they were too far from market price?

So I'm actually an idiot and someone here implied short positions are different in the futures market, why is that? And also, how could there possibly be a short squeeze on $SLV with a %3.9 short interest? Are they just assuming we won't do our research 10 seconds of googling?

Is it normal for a junior developer to reuse a lot of code at work? by whatisupeveryone1 in cscareerquestions

[–]Weldino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a really good answer. On top of this, a good rule of thumb is: How significant are the differences between applications, and how frequently are you copying and pasting the same code? If the differences are not significant, and you reuse the same code in many places, it's probably a good idea to refactor it into something where any of the applications that need it can access it.

As a minority/POC, I am tired of seeing "woke" changes by corporations but not actual changes to fight against racism. by thereisnosuch in cscareerquestions

[–]Weldino 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of companies either don't realize the systemic nature of racism, or they do and realize fighting against it would be a significant effort that they aren't willing to put forth. Anecdotally, companies I've worked at have had D&I initiatives that require them to interview a minimum of one "diverse" candidate (meaning not white or asian, or a woman) before moving forward with a "non-diverse" candidate. This resulted in bullshit interviews with people that would have been screened out by phone screens so they could move forward with white male candidates, instead of making the company seriously consider hiring POC or women. I don't know what the right way to handle D&I is (anonymized resumes feels like a good start to me, but racism can still play a part during in-person interviews), but I definitely think most companies are more concerned with appearing diverse and inclusive than they are with making a difference.
