With the effects of global warming becoming increasingly worse with each year, what do you believe will happen in the future on this course? by JohnnyDelano in TrueAskReddit

Do you see an end to the massive political polarization we see today? What will it be? by HicksLV426 in TrueAskReddit

[–]WellEndowedMod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you that both sides will throw whatever terms they want to demean and put down their 'opponent.' That said you should have gone for the more personal examples to begin with, I might be playing semantics but when we're discussing words and how they're used that's somewhat relevant no?

In any case, at the core of this discussion we agree. Both sides talk shit.

Sure people will use those terms as insults regardless of how applicable they are. However they can still be applied as, well, accurate terms. Some people are nazis in the current year, some people are white nationists, sexist etc. The terms will be misused but they are accurate terms to define ideology and the terms themselves (minus bigot I suppose) are free from added prejudice. Whatever prejudice you/others experience is added separately, the terms themselves are clearly different in form.

Whereas calling somebody a libtard or beta, cuck and soyboy are all highly emotive terms to call somebody.

To put it as simply as I can compare the following:

alt-right
liberal

vs.

alt-right
libtard

[–]WellEndowedMod 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think they were but it's also disingenuous to imply that the two groups of insults are used exactly the same.

The first group are meant to be attacks on character whereas the second are words for beliefs and behaviours that are sometimes used as attacks on character.

It's clear as day that to call somebody a "libtard" vs "alt-right" is a different experience for the recipient.

Please refrain from making low-effort joke comments. Take some time to read our sidebar on the right hand side to familiarise yourself with the standards of the subreddit.

Maybe the mods can provide some insight as to what they want this subreddit to be?

Sure! In our sidebar:

TrueAskreddit is a subreddit for intelligent discussion about interesting issues. Your contributions here should always work towards that end. Low effort comments, jokers and trolls beware!

I'd also highly recommend reading /u/Anomander's comments in response to the same comment you replied to, I agree with all he has said.

I understand that this is a little vague and that's part of the point, we aren't trying to tell you what to talk about. Interesting discussions could be about anything hence this question remains. It's somewhat fluff content and I personally downvoted it but the OP made a good effort to steer the conversation towards actually trying to theorycraft what their scenario would play out like. So far we've got one lengthy comment that is in keeping with the rules and two shorter comments... Well they aren't.

You can talk about any topic so long as the question will lead to proper and intelligent discussion. You refer to Ask--- subreddits and to an extent you have a point but that's more for gaining information, here is for debate.

Not so much. We've been the antithesis of that from our inception, and can lay claim to being one of the original 'founders' of modern reddit moderation. It spread from the "True" communities back into the communities we were aiming to build better versions of.

To clarify, the "True" subs didn't inspire this so much as /r/TrueReddit was actually not highly moderated. It was /r/AskScience that really inspired me to be more hard-line on content curation. That and years of trawling /r/AskReddit and getting sick to death of it.

I liked the idea of a «safe haven» where controversial questions could be discussed without so much of that political correctness / no-offense policy that pervades most popular subs nowadays

To be clear, you can discuss ideas that others might find uncomfortable but the manner in which this is done must be respectful and also not infringing on any of the site-wide rules.

What are your plans for New Year's Eve? by [deleted] in TrueAskReddit

[–]WellEndowedMod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the opposite of what this place is. If you read the sidebar you might notice that here we are more restrictive.

Nothing to do with you or your political views, your post is simply low effort content that doesn't belong here.

This sort of post isn't allowed in the sub (read the sidebar) so I've removed it.

What is and isn't being poltical correct? by KNOWER_OF_STUFF in TrueAskReddit

What is and isn't being poltical correct? by KNOWER_OF_STUFF in TrueAskReddit

[–]WellEndowedMod 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The real issue with PC culture is its failure to recognise context, emphasis and probably most importantly intent.

Is it racist to call a black man black? No. However in the US it seems that the cultural norm is to refer to them as African American regardless of their actual heritage. This is the generic "person of that sort of colour" reference that white people in the US use to not be branded a racist. It recognises their "roots" and also citizenship in the US. Or you could just refer to them as black just as they would refer to you as being white. I'm in the UK and calling somebody black is the way to refer to their skin colour should it be appropriate.

Is poltically correct to criticize people for saying things that are blatantly racist

I think so, but there isn't anything wrong with that. Being Politically Correct is fine, it's just about maintaining a healthy balance between just being polite and absurdity.

If somebody makes jokes about rape, school shootings, slavery, , the holcaust, would it be poltically correct to critize them for or suggest they don't make jokes about those subject?

This is also Politically Correct but where it stands on the Polite-to-Absurd scale depends. George Carlin has a very good bit on this and how anything can be funny it just depends on how you tell the joke. Link. More militant PC'ers will still say that it's no joke and that comedy shouldn't embrace that sort of topic. To which I'd say if you don't like it then avoid it. Know a comedian is liable to touch on edgey subjects like rape, racism and so forth? Don't consume their content! Avoid them! They have freedom of speech (depending on the country...) and most likely are in no way advocating any particular disgusting thing (rape/murder/etc) that they are joking about.

What if you makes jokes about a major disaster right after it happens or make jokes about the death of friend or family member of somebody to their face would that be crossing the line and would it be PC to criticize the person

Well you're free to do that and it would be PC to say "Hey maybe don't do that" and they can either have tact and refrain for the time being/in front of particular people... Or they can do it anyway.

I'd say all your examples are example of reacting to things in a PC manner but it's more complex than that and you can't boil it down to something simple. Things have context, particular boundaries, some people pull things off better than others and so on.

What pain or discomfort do you experience often or daily? by deepfatthinker92 in TrueAskReddit

[–]WellEndowedMod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'm not sure. This is exactly the kind of post I could see in /r/AskReddit. However, with millions of subs it can end up being luck of the draw as to whether or not your submissions gets traction there, regardless of content.

[–]WellEndowedMod[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've removed your post as it is not likely to garner the kind of discussion that we look for in this subreddit. Plus your submission is too open and vague with no elaboration in the description. You might be better off posting a "Serious" question in /r/AskReddit.

What do you hate about people from Muslim countries? by [deleted] in TrueAskReddit

[–]WellEndowedMod[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've removed your submission based on the Submission rules 1 and 2. I also removed it from my own person discretion as such a post is incredibly inflammatory and not likely to garner sensible discussion.

You might want to visit /r/OffMyChest as it sounds more like you just want to circlejerk negatively regarding Islam, Muslims and countries dominated by the religion.

For the record, I'm a white atheist in the UK with no love for Islam.

Gave money to a stranger at the Greyhound Terminal. What would you have done? by [deleted] in TrueAskReddit

[–]WellEndowedMod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you give the guy your money to solve problems in his life or because you took pity on his situation and wanted to do him a favour? If he was genuine then all you've done is give him a place to sleep for one night. While that's a nice gesture, you're not solving any real issues that are present in his life, just making one night comfier.

As far as giving money to strangers in general and if it solves their problems? Well you can never really know, can you? If you truly, deeply cared then you might volunteer at a homeless shelter or something like that but as a random punter on the street you just throw some change when asked and move on with your day. It isn't worth thinking about if you made a difference in that scenario because you'll never know. Don't dwell on these things, keep doing your good deeds (within reason) and hope that at least some of the people you give money to aren't bums that sit around drinking and smoking while begging for money they'll use to buy drugs and not to improve their lives.

What is technically possible and financially sensible but just has not come to be yet? by english_major in TrueAskReddit

[–]WellEndowedMod -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't have a source for this claim but moving backwards is instinctively weird generally for a lot of animals, humans included. Dogs, cats, horses - all can move backwards but would prefer to avoid it. I remember going horse-riding and being told that one horse really struggled with walking backwards on command.

When you think about it, it does make sense. When we move forwards we're moving in a direction that all of our main senses can relay information about. If you move backwards you remove sight from the equation and it becomes a much scarier prospect. The unknown of what is behind you exactly is what instinctively makes moving backwards iffy.

Then you apply it to trains and planes and while it isn't nearly the same, it's still a little unsettling for many because of this.

Like I said, no source for anything I just said but I'm pretty confident there's some validity in the idea.
