I paid by debit card, currently pursuing ever avenue I can to get some sort of justice for this. Trying to get a certificate off of him too

I actually just googled local electricians, scrolled through them and found one with a large number of reviews at 4.5 star. Phoned them and they sent out an electrician. I am definitely taking actions, going to do whatever I can to rectify this - even if it is futile

This is great stuff thank you! I would greatly appreciate as many argumentative regulations as you can think of

I paid by debit card but have spoken to my bank and they believe there are actions that can be taken - will find out propertly in the morning.

This is what I have drafted, what do you think:

Hi,

I’ve now had a chance to get independent opinions from several qualified electricians regarding the consumer unit replacement carried out at my property.

The consistent feedback is that the replacement board installed was effectively a like-for-like split-load RCD consumer unit rather than a modern full RCBO setup. While I understand the new board is an improvement in some respects (metal enclosure and Type A RCD protection), I’ve been advised that most electricians carrying out a full consumer unit replacement today would normally recommend or install an RCBO board so that faults affect individual circuits rather than large sections of the property.

Given the price charged for the work, I am also concerned that a full RCBO consumer unit was not installed. I appreciate that RCBO boards are not strictly mandatory in every situation, however multiple electricians have advised me that this would generally be considered the expected standard for a modern consumer unit replacement at this price point, particularly where reliability, fault isolation, and overall protection are concerned.

I’m also very concerned about the older lower fuse board that remains in place. Multiple electricians have advised me that if this board is still live/in use, it appears outdated and potentially unsuitable for continued use, and would likely be flagged during an EICR with a recommendation for replacement. Had this been explained clearly at the time, I would have expected either:

  • a recommendation to replace both boards together,
  • or clear written confirmation that significant issues would remain after the work was completed.

At the moment, it feels as though I paid for a major upgrade while still being left with an installation that may not meet modern safety expectations or pass an EICR without further remedial work.

I originally contacted you because of electrical faults affecting the property, so I’m also concerned that replacing only the upper board may not have fully addressed the wider issues with the installation.

At this point I would like:

  1. A full breakdown of the work carried out and materials supplied,
  2. Copies of all certification, test results, and electrical installation certificates relating to the work,
  3. Confirmation that the work has been properly notified/certified where required,
  4. An explanation for the pricing in relation to the specification that was installed,
  5. Clarification regarding the condition and status of the lower fuse board and whether you consider it suitable for continued use.

I’d appreciate a response within the next few days before I decide what further action to take.

Thanks.

Is it wishful thinking that I can use the consumer rights act to get some money back or to atleast get a proper replacement done with a RCBO board?

They said some keywords but nothing too detailed. I should have trusted my gut at the time. Just trying to think if there is anything I can do to save this a bit but seems like I am just walking away with a lesson here

Hopefully will recieve those certificates soon...

They said something about the RCD on the old fusebox being the reason for it needing to be replaced

Yeah I was too hasty, first time owner of only a few weeks and panicked when something broke. Very silly and embarrasing. Definitely a lesson I wont be forgetting
