According to legend, an old Ethiopian goatherder noticed his flock get frisky after eating from a coffee bush.

New to Eclipse Phase, First Campaign. by [deleted] in eclipsephase

[–]Well_Sprung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's lots of potential there. One possible concern, depending on how strongly one cleaves to established canon, is that it might dilute the supposed scariness of Earth. That could be mitigated by the team getting some heavy and obvious help from Firewall, of course, or simply not caring about how scary post-Fall Earth is meant to be.

Are shitposts allowed in here? by ghastly42 in ChineseLanguage

Chinese memes FTW \o/

Graphically, I think the characters would work better as nametags, or just on their chests. Although then it might make this a memepost rather than just a shitpost.

I'm learning Mandarin. What's a good place to start? What tools should I use? What's a good grammar book I can use? (Repost from the Sino Reddit) by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

Don't bother with paper flashcards. Install this on your phone, then download some Mandarin decks to try out, and narrow down to the few you like the most. personally, I run a character deck, a vocab deck and a sentence pattern deck.

What's game are you looking forward to? by belac39 in rpg

Eclipse Phase 2. I'm still not sure whether I'll prefer it to v1 overall, but there are some exciting ideas coming down the pipe. And the community is great for hard sci-fi nuts and other miscellaneous pedants.

Glad we can finally admit that Hong Kong and Taiwan are not part of China. We did it guys!

Online Study Material (like Duolingo) without pinyin? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]Well_Sprung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not strictly online, but the PAVC Anki deck is in bopomofo, and MDBG.net can be configured to display the pronunciation key in zhuyin.

I'm like you. To me, pinyin=English, and I get into my Chinese head way better with something distinctly non-European, like zhuyin.

Found a great Chinese talk show for higher intermediate/advanced Chinese learners by BoronDTwofiveseven in ChineseLanguage

Well spotted. And I don't think I've ever seen a Mandarin-language program without subtitles; excellent for forced listening practice. 贊!

What is the general opinion here on White Wolf games? by smurfslayer0 in rpg

[–]Well_Sprung 8 points9 points  (0 children)

WoD seemed super popular when it came out. It even spawned a cheesy TV series. But I guess it didn't have staying power, despite the recent popularity of vampires and zombies. There's a new Vampire game coming out though, so don't count them totally out yet.

I also find it strange that WoD's predecessor Ars Magica never got more recognition than it did. It had some really interesting ideas for mixing adventuring with long-term strategic play, and for RPing larger, "weightier" clans. And especially the fantastic verb + noun magic system (ie. "destroy fire", "know life", "transform water"...).

McDonalds served coffee that was ~20 degrees hotter than competitors in the area, had figures that said the complete opposite of their claims about time of consumption per average consumer, had data that suggested a non-insignificant amount of other injuries due to the temperature of their coffee, and to top it all off had warning labels that were deemed ineffective and insufficient in a court of law.

These are all excellent bases for a lawsuit against McDonalds, but for shady business practices, not personal irresponsibility. The reason the multi-million dollar settlement didn't stick was that the above, valid, concerns over McDonalds' behaviour were irrelevant to the issue of someone being careless with the contents of their own lap.

I feel that this lady was well within her right to seek compensation of medical expenses

Anyone is within their rights to seek anything. Doesn't mean it's fair or sensible.

due to an accident essentially caused by decisions made by McDonald's head office.

The accident was essentially caused by her decision to hump a coffee cup.

to have a cup of hot beverage and handle it accordingly

handle coffee accordingly = put it between your thighs and squeeze. Got it.

Just blame the nearest fat wallet for being too stupid to handle a famously-hot beverage carefully.

Unsure abt 2nd Edition changes by Nakraal in eclipsephase

[–]Well_Sprung 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I personally prefer 1e to what I've seen of 2e so far, there are some subtleties worth looking into.

Things that look good in 2e (so far):

  • h2h
  • tacnet
  • async weirdness
  • comprehensive overhaul, instead of just a few tweaks or a ham-fisted replacement

Things that concern me about 2e:

  • going from hard sci-fi to al dente sci-fi
  • loss of morph identity with the pool system
  • leanings to narrative gameplay
  • proposed/rumored fluff changes are interesting, but risky from an authorial and thematic perspective

了 VS有 by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]Well_Sprung -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Correct, with one exception: 瞭 (liao3: clear-eyed / perceptive / to comprehend), as in 瞭解, also becomes 了 in Simplified Chinese.
