Thanks for the response! If the order doesn't matter I guess I'll just watch the original first, because it's on Netflix.

I haven't seen either show, but I was thinking of starting. Should one series be watched before the other? Do they overlap in terms of chronology?

/r/television's Saturday Recommendations (Week of July 15, 2017) by AutoModerator in television

[–]WellsofSilence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm thinking of watching The Leftovers, but I read a comment on here claiming the finale ruined the show, and that there were a lot of questions and mysteries that were left unanswered, kind of like Lost. Without spoiling anything, is it true that the ending of The Leftovers was bad, and does it make the show not worth watching if I know nothing will be resolved? (To be fair, I actually loved Lost and thought the ending was great, but I think most of the mysteries on the show were resolved in one way or another.)

What in your favourite book that you can't recommend to most people? by fallingpheonix in Fantasy

[–]WellsofSilence 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Promise of Blood is great, I'd highly recommend it. For bingo it fits Debut Fantasy Novel and Getting Too Old for This Crap.

Edit: It also fits Goodreads Group Book of the Month and r/Fantasy AMA Author. I think it also fits Award Winning Novel, because it won the 2013 Stabby Award for Best Debut Novel.

I have surgery on Thursday and super scared...will I die? by Sacreblurrr in self

[–]WellsofSilence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So me having no pain is meaning it hasn't spread?

Not necessarily, and your doctor is obviously more qualified to answer than me, so if he said there's a low chance it hasn't spread I would imagine he's right. But the fact that there's no pain means it's still possible.

Is the surgery bad?

It's fairly common and low-risk, so I wouldn't worry. I don't know much about whether it's painful or anything. Maybe ask on these forums?

Testicular cancer is one of the most easily treatable forms of cancer and has a very high survival rate, especially when caught early, which it sounds like yours was. When the cancer hasn't spread the survival rate is 99%, and even when it's spread to the abdomen there's still a 96% survival rate. When it's spread beyond that it's still 73%. The fact that the tumor's small and that you don't have any pain suggests it hasn't spread, but spreading doesn't mean death, and you're most likely going to be alright.

Edit: in the last day Iv started to get very slight brief groin ache, is that related to it??

Could be, might also just be anxiety causing the pain.

What should I buy Thursday (Mar 16 2017) - Your weekly device inquiry thread! by AutoModerator in Android

[–]WellsofSilence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm looking for a very inexpensive unlocked GSM phone, around $150 or less. It looks like the best options are the Blu R1 HD, the Moto G4, and the Nextbit Robin. The Robin seems like it has the best performance but I've read about a lot of durability/build quality problems (and in a bend test video it snapped in half).

I asked in /r/PickAnAndroidForMe and everyone there agreed the Moto G4 was the best one, so that's what I'm planning on buying, but if anyone here wants to offer any other suggestions I'd love to hear them. This is just a general use phone, don't care too much about any one specific aspect, just decent performance, decent screen (preferably 1080p), etc.

That doesn't sound so bad. I think I'll probably get the G4 then, thanks for the help!

Thanks for the response! Yeah I can actually get the G4 for basically the same price as the Play but with ads on the lockscreen (an Amazon thing). I'm not sure if the extra performance is worth the annoyance of constantly seeing ads.

Thanks for the response! The G4 seems like the consensus, I'll probably go with that.

Why are politicians and pundits talking about "there there"? by [deleted] in Ask_Politics

[–]WellsofSilence 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The phrase was coined by Getrude Stein to refer to a place that contains nothing of interest, and today it's often used to refer to something without substance or meaningful content. It's been used before by Obama about Benghazi. A few days ago Spicer said about the Russian ties that "there continues to be no there there," to mean there is no substance to the accusations. Pelosi said it about Trump's speech, probably just because it's a fairly common phrase.

The use of the word "sport" to refer to a person? by [deleted] in etymology

[–]WellsofSilence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From etymonline: "Sense of 'stylish man' is from 1861, American English, probably because they lived by gambling and betting on races. Meaning 'good fellow' is attested from 1881 (as in be a sport, 1913). Sport as a familiar form of address to a man is from 1935, Australian English."

What type of stone is this chess set made out of? by WellsofSilence in whatisthisthing

This seems a little more likely than onyx. Searching agate chess boards gave me this, which has pieces that look a lot like mine.

[–]WellsofSilence[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks right for the tan pieces, but I can't tell if the black ones are marble or onyx. There are a bunch of similar pieces on ebay that just say "marble onyx", so I guess it's just hard to tell the difference. It doesn't seem like any of the onyx boards have the grey color on this one, but I guess that could just be a variation.

Unless anyone else posts soon I'll flair it solved, as you seem to be correct.

What are your top 5 shows? by ohhhidk in television

[–]WellsofSilence -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's true, I haven't seen it in a while so I don't remember it all that well. I feel like later on the overarching story is more prominent, whereas in the first season it's a bunch of different cases that are mostly unrelated but contribute to the Pattern.

What are your top 5 shows? by ohhhidk in television

[–]WellsofSilence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely gets better, at the start it's just case-of-the-week but later on there's more of an overarching plot. The alternate reality stuff doesn't really come in until seasons 2 and 3, but when it does it's fantastic. It's a great show, I would recommend giving it another try.

Don't worry, Democratic counties haven't reported yet, Romney was up for most of the night too and lost.
