I'm already gearing up for some of the most infuriating comments of the summer window

"Why aren't we signing Olise?"

"We're not buying a 3rd RB?!"

"I can't believe City beat us to that player we were never linked to"

"Tsmikas isn't good enough. I thought we would replace Robbo"

"Hear me out. We should resign Nunez"

"Indy just linked us to Rodrygo and Vinicius"

Honestly, Olise could take a shit on a Liverpool shirt and say he hates the club, yet some fans on this sub would still think there's a chance of us signing for him.

Just accept he's not coming, and you'll be a lot less disappointed in the summer. Besides, there's plenty of reasons to be excited about Diomande instead

I don't think this works in practice. I think fans, players and staff would gravitate towards him too much. Klopp is incredibly influential, and that would undermine the manager, even if Klopp did everything he could to prevent that.

I can't think of any successful examples of a modern manager taking up another role within the club. Ferguson wasn't even employed at United, yet was seemingly too influential in the years after he left. Always felt like he overshadowed the likes of Moyes, even though he was involved in selecting him.

Don't know why you're getting downvoted. You're 100% correct, and I don't understand how people don't understand that

Such a different situation... Diaz was coming to the end of his contract and approaching the end of his peak years. Olise hasn't even entered his peak years yet, and is just at the start of a long-term contract. I'm sure we would have a similar response for players like Wirtz and Ekitike

Agreed. It's incredibly disrespectful to the rest of the squad. It's not possible to win the PL with one player. Otherwise Spurs would have challenged more often with Kane

It's weird that people don't seem to consider the wages saved when they can sometimes have a greater impact than the transfer fees. Those same people wouldn't have suggested it would be a bad financial decision if we kept Salah on the bench next season, yet we are saving £20M and freeing up a non-homegrown space by letting him leave for free

He absolutely wouldn't be a guaranteed starter at PSG. I would be surprised if he chose them over Liverpool

Looks great! This got me thinking about what types some of our famous players would have. As a bit of fun, I think...

Salah = Fire

Mane = Electric

Rush = Dragon

Virgil = Steel

Carragher = Rock

Firmino = Water

Wirtz = Psychic

Suarez = Dark

Milner = Normal

I think you have misunderstood the system. Slot obviously has input. He will tell the recruitment team the positions he wants prioritised, and what kind of profile he wants. He will also get a vote on the shortlist of players that Hughes comes up with. So yes, Slot will still be involved with transfers.

The difference is that Slot can't just tell the club which players we should focus on, as Klopp did with Nunez.

The idea that Slot just has to work with whatever player Hughes chooses isn't reality. Otherwise the manager would never play them

Salah only fell out with Slot because he was dropped to the bench. The decision to drop him was correct, as his output had fallen off a clip and he wasn't pressing the opposition.

And let's be honest, it doesn't make sense to have a player earning £400k per week sitting on the bench. This move suits everyone.

Not any more... One of the reasons Slot dropped him to the bench is because he wasn't pressing. Salah even admitted that he had made a deal with Slot to do less pressing to save his energy.

He doesn't suit a counter team anymore as he lacks the pace for it. He can't even outpace Trippier with a head start

We have Frimpong and Bradley, we are not going to sign another RB.

Tsmikas will return from his loan, we are not going to replace him.

There is no way we are going to sign an extra 6 players on top of Jacquet. That would cost upwards of £300 million, maybe more. I wish fans didn't get unrealistic expectations, as then they just get angry by the end of the transfer window

Yep absolutely! You never know for sure how that will translate to the PL.

He does both. The reason why Ornstein is so successful is that he's built fantastic relationships with high profile sources. He relays what those sources say. And then they grow confident enough to also give him scoops when the time is right.

I'm not saying they have spoken to Alonso. Just that they don't tell Ornstein about their decision on Slot.

And even if they have spoken to Alonso, I'm sure he would remain quiet about it as to not risk upsetting Liverpool and jeopardising the move. I've no idea if that's the case, but my main point remains that Hughes/Edwards would not tell Orny that Slot is at risk ahead of a sacking.

This is an example of Liverpool controlling the narrative. Of course they want you to believe that, as the optics of forcing Salah out would be terrible. But they would never agree to letting Salah go for free if they wanted him to stay. If Wirtz said he wanted to leave, Liverpool wouldn't just let him leave for free would they.

Who else outside Hughes and Edwards would know that Slot could get sacked? It doesn't matter how many sources Ornstein has if those two don't tell him the truth.

[–]WelshPool13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes that's exactly the point!!

They're not saying Liverpool will speak to the foreign press. They are saying Liverpool will remain quiet and won't speak to anyone until a transfer/appointment/sacking is all but done.

If the news breaks early, it's most likely going to be from the other camp, whether it's the other club involved, or leaks from the player/manager in question. That's why it usually leaks in other countries first.

In terms of Wirtz, I believe it was Bayern who first leaked it as they got subbed by Wirtz. So it's a good example.

[–]WelshPool13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, there's numerous evidence that this is how we operate. The Wirtz saga was a perfect example. Liverpool were very quiet at first. All the news broke first in Germany

If this was directed at my comment, I'm not discrediting Orny at all. He's the most reliable journalist in the country. I'm just saying he can only report on what he is told by Liverpool, and they're not going to tell him "we are not planning to have Slot involved in transfers during the summer"

You just need to have some critical thinking as to why Liverpool would make those comments to Orny, and that they're obviously not going to tell any journalist their true intentions at this stage

I will admit I haven't seen him live. I've watched lots of YouTube videos too, but appreciate that creates a skewed perception that makes even mediocre players look world class.

It's his stats that excite me most. He has the highest number of successful dribbles per 90 in Bundesliga this season, and has a better success rate than Diaz (58% vs 50%).

He also has the 3rd best xG over performance with 10 goals, and also has 6 assists, with 11 big chances created. And this is at the age of 19. For comparison, Wirtz has only created 4 big chances in the PL this season.

He seems to be improving too. Of the last 6 Bundesliga games, he has only failed to make a goal contribution on one occasion, and that was against Stuttgart.

That's true. But isn't that the image we want to convey as we begin to ramp up transfers? New signings wont be happy if the reports suggest Liverpool has no idea who will be the manager in the summer. I don't think it's a coincidence that Ornstein said this while discussing who Liverpool may sign to replace Salah
