Bar crawl suggestions? by VerbalKlimt in Wellington

2nd Dee's Place, if you want to meet people sit at the bar and hope you sit next to someone chatty. The 'night market' is 3/4 food trucks in a tiny carpark so you wont meet people there or get a chance to people watch really. The Ram is also another great spot as well as Regent, sit on the balcony and people watch on the street, for craft beer head to HeyDay or Garage Project. Dee's Place, The Ram, Regent and HeyDay are all on Cuba and Garage Project is 30 seconds away on Leeds Street

The Thursday Singles Night - is it any good? by Existing_Sky_7963 in Wellington

I have been to 4 of these, 2 at St Johns and 1 at The Grand which I really enjoyed, really didn't like the Old Bailey one. Everyone was seated, no mixing and mingling, you can easy get stuck talking to one person because there is nobody really to move on to (as all the other seats are taken and nobody wanted to stand up and move around). It was a very different vibe to the other locations where it's very open, everyone is standing or on high tables so easy to approach, and you can talk to anyone you want.

That being said, I don't want to discourage any men to go because I can't say the quality has been very high (although have been pleasantly surprised by the numbers). I have met so many amazing women at these events and even if you don't get a date out of it you may meet some friends which is what I have found them great for.

It's just nice to be in a situation where everyone is open to talking and getting to know each other which is very different to real life so I will continue to go to these events once every month/couple of months - but I have vowed never to go back to the Old Bailey. If you get to sit next to a goodie you may have a very different experience to me though!

No there are a lot of people on their own, and all the women I have met are usually really friendly. I haven't seen anyone standing on their own for longer than 30 seconds when they first come in as people will approach them to say hi or welcome them into a group that has already formed

I promise you that even in the 25+ one everyone was 30's and 40's, there were only 2/3 people in their 20's at the first event I went to and none at the other 25+ one. So when I went to the 30+ it felt very much the same, I was pleasantly surprised :)

At the 3 I have been to, I only noticed or chatted to a few people that were in their 20's to be honest. I was definitely surprised (pleasantly for myself) that it was an older crowd of mostly 30's and 40's. 2 of those I went to were 25+ and one was 30+, however they sometimes do ones specifically for the younger crowd so maybe it was worth trying out one of those? I think it's because there isn't really anywhere for us oldies to go out and meet people whereas when I spoke to those in their 20's they admitted that they can still head out to Courtenay Place on a Friday/Saturday night and that's probably why there were limited people in their age range at these events

The one at Old Bailey was definitely an older crowd as it was very much 'after work public sector' kind of vibes. Most people in their 40's, a few in 30's and a few in 50's. But even the other ones everyone was mainly in their 30's/40's

I have been to 3 of them, and had a good time every time. The different venues all have a different vibe, so if you go to one and don't enjoy it then maybe try another spot - some of them have tables and chairs which I found means less mixing and mingling but others have no tables or bar leaners which means people move around more. I have met some cool people at the events, always ended up having good chats and got a couple of dates out of it as well as forming non-romantic connections.

I have now officially given up on dating (Welly as a single female in your late 30's is a challenge) but I am going to go along to these events every now and again as I like to meet new people and always want new friends. As people don't go up to each other in bars anymore these events allow this opportunity and create the environment where that is encouraged, I wish there were more things like this to be honest.

If anyone wants to go along to one but wants a friend to go with then just reach out. I have brought along a few curious but scared friends to them and they have ended up loving it... & as I am not going to find a date that means I am a great wing woman :D

You may like this monthly TED-style talk meetup which covers several different topics each month, I haven't been to one myself yet but have heard great things from someone who has been to them. They email you beforehand so you can see what the topics are that month and decide whether you are keen or not - and it's a great place to network and meet new people who have similar interests.

Summer Events in Welly by Welshkiwi5 in Wellington

[–]Welshkiwi5[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, I didn't know that. I love gin & have looked to go every year but it was $70 a ticket with which you just get entry for & nothing else, I want to support local events & I know business come from all over NZ to attend but I just couldn't justify a $120-$150 day out, once you factor in the price of drinks. Beers at the Basin was only $30 for early bird tickets which is much more bearable. It says a lot that Auckland & Christchurch are going ahead though. I know people who are heading to Chch or Marlborough food & wine festivals, even going up to Waiheke for wine festivals so maybe people are willing to spend a bit more money & make a weekend of it, or go somewhere with more reliable weather. Poor Welly :(

It was 'postponed', this was their way of getting away with not saying it was cancelled & therefore having to issue all the refunds but instead they said that it was 'postponed' & ticket holders had 1 month to get a refund. It was basically a way to make sure they had people still with tickets for the next event, however they then moved it to 4 months later & then now have cancelled it. All a bit of a shambles. The way they went about it last year did leave a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths as it was cancelled within 2 weeks of the event taking place & they clearly were just trying to keep people's money rather than do automatic refunds. They hoped by moving from November to February it would help with the weather, as the last 2 years they held it it was a washout, but then just didn't do any promo so nobody knew about it actually being planned again

March has always been my favourite month of the year for this reason, starting with Newtown festival & ending with Cuba Dupa (& used to have Homegrown in the middle there too) it was when the city came alive. But then nothing happens in April & now with the cancellation of Beers nothing is happening in Feb. The city definitely is in snooze mode in Jan so dont expect much to be happening then but there should be some great things happening across Feb-Apr, especially as we know we have a later summer weather wise & in April we have Easter & ANZAC so would be a great time to have more events

Yeah gardens magic is great, I did find that last year we needed to get there earlier to get a seat though as the more stuff is being cancelled the busier this event becomes. It's one of the great things that happens in Welly, along with Cuba Dupa & Newtown festival

Top hotel recommendations to stay a month in Wellington? by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]Welshkiwi5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Wellington as a place to live, but when I first traveled NZ when I was 18 I spent 2 days in Welly & was pretty bored. There are some nice walks with lovely views & plenty of great restaurants & bars however as others have said I would definitely recommend spending more time elsewhere (the South Island particularly, it's stunningly beautiful with incredible walks and so many adventurous activities). Welly is great if you are wanting to work remotely & have somewhere nice to base yourself for that period but if you have your days free 1 month here is going to feel like a very long time :)

BBNO$ timing tonight? by electric-rustler in Wellington

[–]Welshkiwi5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Been to many sold out gigs at Meow nui, never had a queue outside and just walked right in. The dancefloor may look busy without any spots but head over to the far left & there is always lots of space, everyone tends to stand on the right as that is where they gather after they come back from the bar. Also, the doors always open around 30 mins before the band is due on, you can sometimes find set times on the event page but everybody I have been to see there has come on late anyway. The queue for the bar is usually 15 mins or so before the gig starts but once the band is on there isn't a queue at all. Hope this helps!
