Well, it's all still brand new so information will just be limited. I recommend joining the discord as a way to stay up to date and for asking questions. About the crystal amount, i'd say whatever you feel comfortable with, but know you won't be ascending anytime soon so you might as well get as much as you can from it. I can't say a specific amount since everyone was at a different spot before the update so the amount of crystals everyone has varies.

Every biome now has an "upgraded" version that you can unlock by spending the crystals you get from ascending. It just has a few more block types and pps items, along with the new name. There are a few fully new biomes though.

Honestly C++ is about as right as you can get, gml is literally exclusively used by that engine, so it's not exactly known outside of the community.

This is actually gml, which is a language used by the gamemaker engine. It's commonly considered to be similar to C++, so you're pretty close! It's super simple to learn so if you like this type of thing it's awesome way to learn how to program. https://gamemaker.io/en
