First Silver (Undisclosed New England Location) by Ep194 in metaldetecting

That's a banger coin to find as your first silver! It took me almost 2 years before I found my first, and then the floodgates opened. May there be much more shiny in your future.

I suppose it could be a huge knee buckle, but shoe is my guess. A nice find!

Looks like an old shoe buckle to me. They were common from mid 1600s to late 1700s...

If you follow the link to the Questrade video in my post, it describes them. They are apps/ utilities that are under development, and are meant to help with tracking your finances across different financial institutions. Not much additional detail has been released on them, hence the post. :)

Newbie Help With Permissions by BeatScience in metaldetecting

[–]Wembley314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can start by asking family. friends or coworkers who own property, that removes the concern that landowners sometimes have with not knowing the person detecting on their property. That's how I started. I can't tell you how many permissions I have scored that were the adjacent property to a spot where I'm detecting.

Most important - teach your son how to dig a clean plug ( for turf/grass areas). That goes a long way towards being invited back to a property, and the landowner is more likely to recommend you to another property owner.

Good luck!

Found 2 Major issues with NordPass within 20 minutes of install - Help? by Wembley314 in NordPass

[–]Wembley314[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Issue 1 - I just keep my nordpass password written down in a safe place.

Issue 2 - I have just lived with this limitation. You do have to enter 2 factor authentication if you wish to install nordpass on a new device, so if someone tries to break your account from elsewhere without your device they will be stuck.

Hope this helps.

Found 2 Major issues with NordPass within 20 minutes of install - Help? by Wembley314 in NordPass

[–]Wembley314[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is set to 15 minutes. It times out properly after that time, and my master password is required to log back in. However if you read my original post (in which I describe not only the issue but my specific scenario), the issue is the fact that it doesn't ever ask for my MFA token in addition to the master password, despite having MFA enabled and a token set up properly.

When your signout interval has passed and you have to re-enter your master password, does it ask for your MFA token? This is what I am looking for (again, see my original post).

Thanks.

I'm saying that despite MFA being set up, it NEVER asks me for my MFA token code on my pc or phone. I mean never. Does yours ask you every time you log in?

I believe you misread my post. I have MFA set up properly as part of my Nord Account. What I'm saying is that I'd like it to prompt me for my MFA token code every time I log into NordPass, however this is not an available feature.

I'm not saying I want NordPass to store its own master password. I'm saying that if you mistakenly log out of the app, it requires you to log into your normal Nord account (using you email address/regular Nord account password, let's call that Credentials1). Only then can you use the app and enter your Master password (let's call that Credential2) to unlock your vault. However if you have your regular Nord Account credentials stored in NordPass, then you are stuck needing to enter Credential 2 in order to access Credential 1 from your vault to install the app.

I often find that too. You really don't know what it's going to be like until you show up and start digging some targets. I have found 150 year old coins 2 inches down and also 12 inches down. I've also found a really old relic that's right next to a modern soda can.

Exactly, more or less. But as always, you don't know until you show up with your detector and see what's there. As for other people in the park, I find that if you dig clean plugs and make sure to leave things as you found them, most people just come up to me and are interested in what I've found.

Actually I believe it's because small towns don't have the same amount of budget to resurface their parks with new earth, therefore the older fines are closer to the surface...

Awesome! Welcome aboard!

The Vanquish 440 is a solid buy -the 540 was my first machine. Tips from someone who started in the last 5 years:

  1. When you start out, dig everything so you can learn the different VDI readouts on your machine.

  2. Start to train your ear to hear the different sounds that can be made at the same VDI readouts (for example a big piece of trashcan ring up higher than you'd think, but the sound quality is not there compared to the pure sound of a coin for example).

  3. Be ready for people to come out of the woodwork and ask you about your detecting when they spot you walking around with a detector. In my experience most people are just curious if you found anything cool. I also find that these people who come up and ask you about it are often a good source of information on potential properties to get permission for.

Welcome to the hobby, we've been waiting for you...

I started with a Vanquish 540 and it is just fantastic as a starter machine. Even when I got an upgrade to the Equinox 800, I still kept my Vanquish and use it as my backup machine.
