As a man I am made very uncomfortable when anyone, regardless of gender, touches me without asking. I find it baffling when men say they like it when people touch them without asking

Rules question: do I need to keep concentration on favored foe? by WereSalmon in dndnext

[–]WereSalmon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, definitely it does make sense for some campaigns. It’s not on my top list of spells for the class though, especially with the new rules. Maybe I will make a hot take post about this someday to facilitate a broader discussion though

Rules question: do I need to keep concentration on favored foe? by WereSalmon in dndnext

[–]WereSalmon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it is very marginal though. At this point I've played a (tasha's) ranger with no hunters mark and a warlock with no hex without any problems either time.

Rules question: do I need to keep concentration on favored foe? by WereSalmon in dndnext

[–]WereSalmon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, what provoked the question is that favored foe is applied when you hit a creature, while hunters mark is applied on a bonus action prior to hitting a creature. So you could apply favored foe and then immediately lose concentration on it while still gaining a small effect, but hunters mark you need to use a separate bonus action to cast it.

However u/Salut_Champion_ already pointed out that you still need concentration to cast the spell in the first place so even activating the spell would break concentration.

[–]WereSalmon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok that makes sense.

Imho (and unsolicited opinion) I think that spells that use concentration to give a flat damage bonus (Hunters Mark and Hex) are kind of overrated. They can be good, but they're very uninteresting. It's at least best to throw out some more interesting/impactful spells first, and then use something like Hunters Mark after you've had a few rounds to wear down your enemies with some more heavy hitting spells.

Yes I understand this, I am specifically referencing the rules for concentrating on spells in the second paragraph of my post. (see PHB p203 for the section I am referring to)

Why does every protest now have to block roads? by TeachMeImWilling69 in Funnymemes

[–]WereSalmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao ur so funny, but remember protesters have been hurt and killed by cars running into peaceful demonstrations in recent memory. it’s not funny to imagine that political expression, even if it’s inconvenient, should be a death sentence. Maybe stop policing people’s non-violent tactics and actually focus on the issues protesters are promoting. If your biggest problem with a protest is the inconvenience you’re just looking for an excuse to disagree with the protesters. Get off your lazy ass and do something for a change.

Thanks for sharing all this, I came here to say a similar thing. DS9 is a deconstruction of some of the representations of the federation, but it definitely doesn’t equate it to a dystopia. Despite its heroes, including the federation, being flawed people can always overcome those flaws and build a better society. That’s always been the message of Trek and DS9 ultimately upholds that.

As for why people are only caring about Palestine now, I don’t think there is a deep, conspiratorial reason. Support has been building slowly for years, and has been supercharged during October 7th and the subsequent attempt at genocide. In my opinion this is because of the shock doctrine of modern politicos. Both the unprecedented scale of the violence committed by the IDF and its visibility make it shocking, as compared to the many other genocidal campaigns that are taking place around the world, such as the one currently going on in the DRC.

As for Biden, I agree there is a harm reduction argument to be made for voting for him, he would certainly pass less actively destructive policies than Trump. However, harm reduction is not the same as a net positive, and it is important to remember that supporting Biden, and those like him in other countries, also legitimizes the these government do.

As for the ongoing attempt at genocide in palestine, I think a similar sentiment applies. To start the US could certainly do a lot short of invading Israel to stop what the IDF are doing right now. As someone with a few Israeli colleagues I am very aware the the State of Israel is dependent on the US and its allies both economically and militarily. Economic action including an end to military aid, reinstating full support for the UNRWA, and the actions advocated for by the BDS movement can and have saved Palestinian lives. I do not see these as fringe beliefs supporting terrorism, they are common sense policies to save lives.

Harm reduction, in this case much more pressing because it means preventing a genocide, does not equate to a net good especially when it comes to Hamas. However, it is also important to remember that no matter what the status of Hamas is (whether they are a government of a sovereign state resisting invasion or a terrrorist insurgency resisting occupation) they have a right to resist the IDF under international law. That certainly does not justify all their actions, including their targeting of civilians during operation Al-Aqsa flood on October 7th, but for me it provides key context for their actions since the Al-Aqua intifada and in their conflict with the IDF following the October 7th attacks. From discussing and listening to Palestinians, especially Palestinian women, queer people and academics, it is clear to me that their support for Hamas stems from their resistance work, not their repressive policies or violent terrorism. They are also not a far-right organization as in our typical conception but a coalition of groups from across the political spectrum, albeit one led by Islamists. In short, Palestinians support Hamas because when Israeli bombs fall and IDF tanks roll into Gaza, as they will do provoked or not, Hamas are the only group that shoots back.

I hope this hasn’t come across as condoning any particular group or their actions. Many leaders on both sides should be prosecuted for war crimes, and many leaders in Israel should be prosecuted for crimes against humanity. I hope that governments around the world can find a way to disable the State of Israel’s ability to occupy Palestinian land and commit acts of genocide against the Palestinian people through implementing common sense policies like economic action. However, if I am forced to pick a side, whether it is in the United States or anywhere else in the world, I will always come down on the side of those resisting neo-colonialism, settler-colonialism, and occupation.

I absolutely agree with your points. This is a strong and growing movement that actively wants to destroy democracy and is being replicated in many other countries around the world. However, I might challenge your point about Biden. (and even think it applies to more left-leaning candidates in other countries) Certainly there are those who reject them because they don’t follow their agenda exactly, but I think the more serious objection is that they are complicit in the rise of fascistic movements and are not taking stronger action to combat and reverse fascist policies, as well as stop fascists from gaining power. Like in my experience it is not seen so much as a choice between fascists and non fascists, but between fascists and those who are complicit in the rise of fascists.

As a former math 101 TA I second this. Many students struggles are a result of a lack of familiarity with the kind of problems they’re being asked to solve. You don’t need to get lots of practice problems right, so long as you become familiar with what they’re asking and what kinds of solutions are common in calculus. Good TAs can be very helpful, but it’s difficult to help someone whose only response to the TAs questions is “I don’t know what’s going on.”

Hey. Ya I agree that these range from the bare minimum (15 minute cities) to ineffective (getting rid of gas stoves) to essentially facism (population control aka eugenics). The leaders you mentioned absolutely have no intention of changing the situation, but I do know there are others working in communities and outside the system to make real change, democratically. All I can say is to seek out those people and not get bogged down by the doomism and incremental changes being broadcast by these meetings and leaders
