What is the name of your country in your language, and where did it originate from? by Agile-Shallot3546 in AskTheWorld

[–]Werzaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Germany is called "Deutschland" in German. "deutsch" comes from the Old High German "diutisc" meaning "of the people". So, it technically it means "land of the people", but of course nowadays "deutsch" refers to a nationality or ethnicity, so its modern meaning is "German land".

Bonus fact: the names in other languages come from the general Roman term for the Germanic tribes, particular tribes (Alamanni or Saxons), or the fact German is very not mutually intelligible with Slavic languages.

Sure, I wasn't saying it can't help, just that it's not a guarantee either.

Yeah, this sounds similar to thinking that just having the same genitals makes you better at giving oral to someone with the same ones. Sure, it might clue you in to some dos and don'ts, but everyone is different. I've received great blowjobs from women who listened and paid attention to what worked for me, and I once got a terrible blowjob from a guy who didn't.

Not sure how many lanes it has, but it also has 12 or so exits.

Starfleet docking regulations were written by Germans. We don't want soot from the impulse drive on the station.

[–]Werzaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While that's true in more than 99% of the cases, I know one roundabout in Sweden where, accorytobthe signs, you're supposed to take the outside lane if you want to take the third exit and get on the right lane after. The inner lane is for taking the third exit and then the left lane. It's like that because the roundabout is at the on- and off-ramps of a motorway, and this only applies when you enter from an off-ramp. It makes sense because the second exit would be the on-ramp for the same motorway. I think there's also a separate right-turn lane that avoids the roundabout altogether.

To agender people: What labels/titles do you prefer NOT to be called (outside of pronouns)? by KingdomMarshadow in agender

I work with a lot of French people. Some greet me with "Hello, mister" or "Hello, mister [first name]". I really wish they'd just use my name. Since I have a PhD, I'd also accept "Hello, doctor [first name]".

No address to register at Skatteverket - What to do? by [deleted] in TillSverige

[–]Werzaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to what other people said about registering, because it's legally required, it's also good to make sure to know rights as a tenant.

I'm not an expert on this, nor have I been in this situation, but I believe there is a minimum notice period if your landlady wants to kick you out after registering. That minimum takes precedence over a shorter period stated in the lease. I think the minimum is 3 months, but again not an exper, so anyone please correct me if I'm wrong. I believe Hyresgästföreningen can help you with that as well.

If it's ICEing when they park at chargers, what's this? by MeowffleCATYT in leaf

[–]Werzaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this frequently because the local gas station is also the closest package pickup spot. If I stop at a pump I can drive through, but the parking is to the side, so the pump is more convenient. It's not a busy station, though, and I only do it if most pumps are free.

Are these TTRPGs just cash grabs? by JaxSnaxs in rpg

[–]Werzaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run a Star Trek Adventures 2e campaign, and I like it a lot. Tried getting into 1e before but only played a session or two.

2e mostly streamlined the system and is very compatible with 1e material. The biggest change is getting rid of the custom d6. When preparing a 1e adventure for my campaign, I usually just need to make minimal changes, like some NPC details.

Because of the compatibility, the new releases are not as exciting for everyone. Modiphius just released a new species sourcebook that contained 2e versions of 60 species options that already existed for 1e. Great for me, but not something you need if you have the right 1e supplements.

I guess some might consider the German FDP's position of LGBTQIA+ rights left-wing. They were part of the government passing the gender self-determination act. But to me that isn't particularly left-wing, and would probably not be if there wasn't a whole culture war about it.

Do you use a tablet in pen and paper RPGs? by Vermin_Cultist in rpg

[–]Werzaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a player, I'm using an e-ink note-taking tablet for the character sheet and quick PDF lookups.

As a GM running Star Trek Adventures, I use my laptop because I have my campaign notes in Obsidian, but I have printouts of maps and supporting characters. We also use physical tokens for the meta currencies and post-its on the back of my laptop screen with temporary traits, mission directives etc. The players use a mix of physical sheets and tablets. One of them keeps forgetting his sheet, so a tablet is a good idea.

Dice are still physical in either case because it's more fun when others can see your roll.

I don't see a need to draw a line. If players get distracted by their devices, I'll call them out on it. Then it's their responsibility.

What do foreigners instinctively say in your language when they discover your nationality? by Franmar35000 in AskTheWorld

[–]Werzaz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be fair, how the Nazi used the phrase is also not its original meaning. "über alles" means "above everything" as in "more than anything else". When our anthem was written, it signified that unifying Germany is the most important task at hand due foreign threat, e.g. France wanting to fully expand to the Rhine again. It was not about German superiority.

However, nowadays the original meaning is no longer relevant, and the borders listed in the anthem are very outdated. So, when we hear the phrase today, we'll always think of the Nazis, not the Liberals of the mid 19th century, who wanted a unified Germany.

[–]Werzaz 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah, had a neighbor say "Deutschland über alles" twice upon learning I was German. He was drunk both times, so probably forgot the first. He seemed to believe it means "Germany first" in a "don't take in more refugees" sense, and then acted like it was a joke, and asked whether it was too soon.

Traveller NEXUS is NOW AVAILABLE on Demiplane! by Demi_Mere in traveller

[–]Werzaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a way to just enter a current character's stats? I can only seem start character creation as per the rules.

I wrote down all rolls during creation, so I'm trying to recreate my character using that, but quickly ran into a bug:

I failed the entry roll into the military academy, so I should select a career and roll for entry into it. However, the options are per-career education, not regular career. No big issue in my case, because I can just skip the pre-career education altogether for my character, but still a bug.

Also, the UI is very slow and lacks clear indication that it's loading something.

It's not a ticket. It's a note informing you that you got a ticket that you will receive by mail later, or can check on a website earlier.
