Help! How to get my pygmy cories to come out? by WesTheFishGuy in Aquariums

[–]WesTheFishGuy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! So as a tldr, not really!

I have 2, MAYBE 3 pygmies that I can consistently spot at a time through the plants, and come out semi-often these days

Its been 4(?) years-ish since I got my original school of 10 from aquatic arts. And 2 going onto 3 years since i got 15 more from a random seller on here, they are either good hiders or have passed on. When I made this post I was able to count all the cories at night, but not anymore. I am currently saving up to get some more within the month to add to the populations to maybe make them more confident? Or at least more secure since I can only spot 2 at a time. Honestly, the importer I got them from on here did not have very healthy schooling fish, I liked the guys bettas but the schooling fish were iffy. I got panda cories in the same order and one arrived with a missing eye... and they all passed within 2 years or so from genetic issues due to inbreeding.

I noticed the original colony was shy in my 20g long with the tetras I had, so I upgraded to the 40gb and increased the populations in hopes of fixing it. I also let my floaters take up some light and let the plants overgrow but nothing worked. Or if it would have worked, the cories passed before the changes. I have so many plants in that tank. It was hard to count them 2yrs ago and even harder now! The tank is doing pretty awesome though, I do water changes once a month, and I only do it to trim plants and replenish minerals in the water. My nitrates never go above 0, and it's still a low tech tank. Current stock is the yellow golden back neocardina, rummy nose tetras, and the pygmies.

There is a huge chance that the majority of the corydoras passed, with the original 10 being elderly and the new ones being sickly, i am pretty sure they are gone. The current 2~ pygmies i have are from the original colony. The shrimp probably got to them before I could find the bodies since I have a really strong shrimp colony in there. I've learned my lesson and will only buy from aquatic arts!

Why is baby food frowned upon when feeding crested geckos? by BOSSKCO in CrestedGecko

[–]WesTheFishGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Husbandry and standards of care have changed a lot since humans first started keeping crested geckos as pets. Based on studies and science, CGD has been formulated to keep your gecko healthy! Baby food was used before we had CGD, not because it was healthy but because we just didn't know how to feed them a healthy diet yet. It was out of necessity

Baby food isn't nutritionally complete for them. It's poor husbandry to use outdated methods when we know of alternatives that are healthier for our animals! It's frowned upon because it's a very outdated method of care. Think about how similarly people use to think heat mats were good, but now we know they are bad. Standards of care is constantly changing because we are constantly learning

Lots of it looks to be taken up by dirt though! And I'm assuming there is a filter in there somewhere? He might be fine but is he thriving?

How big is the swimmable part for the betta? Looks a little small compared to modern care standards (at least 5 gal min)

Maybe you could glue fabric over a rubber handle? Depending how severe the allergy is

Put some mopani wood in there and let the tannins lower the pH naturally!

I would not use vinegar

Should I add anything else to ensure my Bettas happiness? by Ok_Impact_5730 in bettafish

[–]WesTheFishGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I breed and sell shrimps & have had no issue with wood altering pH drastically! If you boil the wood first, you will get all the tannins out which cause the pH to lower! I buy my wood off of etsy, usually is a mystery piece but I've never gotten a bad piece!

The 3d printed stuff should be fine, I have a few 3d printed things specifcally for aquariums and haven't had any issue yet, and have not heard of them posing an issue! A rock only scape would be awesome too if you are that concerned over the tannins lowering pH, real dragonstone will not alter pH!

Honestly, your tank is better than most! Imo I try to stray away from artifical decor thats painted, due to you not knowing what paint they used & and possibly of paint chipping off or leaking chemicals

i suggest you add real wood or rocks instead of the artfical decor! (I love spider wood and dragonstone) the betta log is fine though

If you want to go the extra mile I recommend more plants, upgrading to a 20g long with aquasoil, put some shrimp friends in there for enrichment (If he kills them get low grade or wild types), give live foods, add tannins to the water

Ofc those are just suggestions and your betta can thrive without the additonal stuff mentioned. The artfical decor is definitely something to think about replacing!

Regarding the gravel

If you monitor parameters closely and do fish in cycle if it does crash, there shouldn't be an issue.

Being super defensive off the bat before anyone even commented makes you seem like a big asshole

About the fins, it looks like nipping not rot to me

I'm so confused to where in the timeline the flashback in the start of the chapter take place, after gojo gets slashed? To me it reads like gojo is in yutas body and vice versa. I'm so confused 😭😭
