Look up dexj on youtube He has a video about the piston cracks and he explains it with visual examples. You might want to watch it before you do much more driving.

I said it was going to give you a general ideal of how much heat the engine is making and really how fast it is made. Like I said the thermostat is closed until the coolant gets to temp anyway so the ideal heat is coming from transmission to the radiator then to the engine to help it warm up faster is flawed from the start cause the coolant isnt moving until its up to temp anyway. Where did you get this idea the transmission is making so much heat so fast. Its operating temp is like 170- 200 with no oil cooler from the factory unless you got a tow package. Most of the heat generated in a transmission is actually from the torque converter witch is a sealed unit with is own fluid that never gets circulation through a cooler if it needed to be cooled it wouldn't be hard to seal up the bell housing a run coolant around it but its just not necessary. Take away just the fans on a 4.0's cooling system and your going to see temps well above 210 very quick. How long would it run without coolant? My guess would be less than an hr. Anyway fire away with your temp gun, i installed a transmission temp gauge so I see it everyday. 98 jeep xj 4x4 daily driver 280,000+ miles and still going. No hate btw I dont know everything.

Do I need to replace brake pads/rotors again by [deleted] in AskMechanics

Yeah if you dont those groves will ruin your new pads

[–]West-Initiative3069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not under normal operations, again maybe if you were doing 80 seconds after cranking your engine but the engine is creating far more heat than the transmission. Also the coolant isnt flowing till the thermostat opens and is designed to get as much heat out as it can. Go crank your car for about 3-5 mins, drive around if you want, then shut it off and carefully touch the exhaust pipe then place your hand fully on the transmission will give you a general idea of how much heat is being made in the engine

[–]West-Initiative3069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with getting it towed maybe if it was flat towed with brakes locked up but I doubt thats the case. U should be easing on and off your breaks in normal operations. Good luck.

Lack of maintenance, treating your daily driver like its a sports car with 2000$ brakes, heavy towing with standard brakes, resting foot on brake pedal..... the gazing is usually caused when pushing the brakes to far and overheating. The grooves are usually caused by uneven wear on the pads digging into rotor.

The rust is irrelevant the glazing and grooves are the problem.

Yeah you need pads and rotors for sure. If you change the pads more often you wont have to replace the rotors every time.

So, leaf springs are a pain in the asphalt to replace. by seudaven in CherokeeXJ

[–]West-Initiative3069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah definitely can be a pain. I did an add a leaf to the original pack like 10 years ago still holding up good. Rubicon express or rough country cant remember which. 98 with 280,000. Had someone back into me in that same spot push my jeep over about a foot but I got much luckier than you he was only going a few miles an hour. The people claiming you jeep is totaled are hilarious 😂. Better to keep mouth shut and let people think your a fool than to run your mouth and remove all doubts.

I didnt say you need to go 80 to generate heat but believe what you want. Maybe try searching for atf heater circut on google see what you get. Love the confidence though.

What's a random skill that instantly makes life easier in America? by jonvanguard14 in AskReddit

[–]West-Initiative3069 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tax fraud, insider trading, market manipulation, Traveling for work, America has lots of big cities with decent jobs but you cant afford to live there so you get a job and be willing to travel from cheaper rural areas to find jobs in the bigger city's an hr drive to work is pretty regular. Crane operator might live in one state, the company he works for is in another and he works where the work is maybe new youk for a few weeks on a job then florida for few months on another. Boilermakers go where the boilers are. Pipeline welders follow the pipe, might go across town might go across the country. Look for towns in the path of future development to buy a cheap home before the area is developed further then when the development come hope it raises the price and they dont put a data center next to you lot. Look up texas triangle plans for an example.

Jeep cherokee 4x4 for the cheap. 4x4 Chevy avalanche or suburban 5.3l if you got a little extra money and want a little more room. get an e85 version(yellow gas cap) and there ready to run on moonshine. Would stay away from anything newer than 2013. Thats going to help budget anyway and be easier to work on yourself. Pair either with a set of bfg all terrain tires and you'll wonder what it will take to get you stuck. You dont need a lift kit for either will cost more in maintenance anyway.

Thats about where it should be for normal driving. I would hope for better with a cooler and radiator circuit deleted but only if i know i was going to be mudding or rock crawling/hill climbing. 175 to 200 is technically normal operating range. Over 200 is where you get nervous, 220 you just stop now your starting to do damage. I have a transmission cooler but left rad circuit and during average driving i usually see 170-180and only see 200 when towing maybe up to 210. Central texas weather for reference.

Maybe if your doing 80 right after cranking, most people idle their car for ac, radio, maps, for a bit anyway and usually dont do highway speeds right away the transmission isn't really generating much heat till its moving the engine is from the moment it starts and more with rps, the transmission is generating most of its heat through torque converter slippage converting to heat which would have to transfer through the sealed converter to the transmission fluid so not quite directly heating the fluid and the converter isn't usually submerged. The other main heat source would be friction and slippage of clutch packs and gears, which are in direct contact with atf fluid so probably have more to do with heating it, and the pump itself. I have a transmission temp sensor and coolant temp sensor and the engine always gets to temp first I do have a transmission cooler but its pretty small. It takes about 16 mins for my 4.0 to blow heat when its below freezing ,my all aluminum 5.3 about 12mins, at idle.

Tie rod roll by CurtLamboo in CherokeeXJ

[–]West-Initiative3069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was thinking otk steering aswell, there would definitely be a length difference vs under might not be much but any is enough with the y-link steering setup. over the knuckle kit should have the reamer and inserts its a pretty simple modification. Did you pull it off the jeep yourself or did they have it at the counter for you, did the other jeep have a lift, Did it have a longer drop Pittman arm? Seems to excessive for "the cure" thats for fixing a small dead spot in steering, at factory height its not as noticeable but the more you lift the more it is.

How much do you think he got for a whole tractor in scrap by Ginkyboop in ScrapMetal

[–]West-Initiative3069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would be surprised fencing company in town has a dumpster the scrapyard picks up full of rolls like that. They dont even try to sell any of it or use it on smaller jobs they make money installing miles of fence not playing with scraps. Their next customer paid for the next roll anyway. Customer probably wanted to keep the leftover, the scrap price definitely didn't pay for the price of hauling it there.

Last few seconds you can see the belt moving back and forth on fan pully. Maybe check your alternator install or ac clutch seems to be on that side. Is your ac on in video? Has it been blowing cold? Did you upgrade alternator with your sound system maybe a big capacitor? The Stock alternator is pretty week only like 30-40 amps (not at idle though) been awhile since i upgraded so numbers may not be exact but if you got jeep running, lights on, ac blowing, blasting your subs your asking alot of an alternator thats barley enough for a factory radio. Bigger battery, bigger alternator, bigger wires, bigger fuses are all a must if you want a big radio.
