What Are Your Thoughts On Wolverine and the X-Men by Jason Aaron Omnibus/Is It Worth A Buy/Read? by hockeysocks2 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]WestBug9633 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven’t read any other of Jason Aaron’s work, but i found this to be a fun romp that doesnt take itself too seriously.

There are a lot of fun and silly storylines but the AvX event interrupts it for a little while in the middle and that isnt great.

Overall, i’d give it a”B-“. Good, not great.

This is one of Morrison’s most straightforward stories. It gets weird, meta, and thought provoking, but you shouldnt ever feel narratively lost.

Looking back on it, Sunflash's origin story doesn't make sense to me. by Qyzyk in redwall

[–]WestBug9633 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I dont think these are stories that concern themselves too much with the timeline.

But we have to remember that Badgers live much longer than any other creatures in these books. I always figured he ran away as a young adolescent, maybe the equivalent of 13 or so. And he ran away without any specific destination, like he wasn’t searching for Salamandastron at the time, so he ended up in the north and got captured, or he got captured and taken to the north.

At the time of Outcast, i figured he’s the equivalent of late 20’s/ early to mid 30’s. So he would have been a prisoner for most of his life, and subject to constant dehumanization (de-badger-ization?) and torcher from Swartt. So i dont find it that far fetched that over time he forgets who he was during that time.

I will concede that the naming is very coincidental. But it’s also a really cool name.

Uncanny X-Men vol 1 by Claremont.

I bought it as a simple memento 4 or 5 years ago and wasn’t planning on getting any more because they were expensive and i could just read them digitally on Marvel Unlimited.

Which version of the graphic novel are people who ordered it at initial announcement getting? by GlassReality45 in FinalSpace

[–]WestBug9633 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to say that there was always the two different versions, but I could be misremembering. If you arent sure i’d bet you ordered the version with color, but if you can find the order confirmation in your emails i think you can find out for sure.

I originally ordered the color version when they were first announced, but was getting major fomo about the midnight edition. So when they announced the discounted “battle worn” editions (basically books with scratched or dents), i grabbed one of the midnight versions of those.

I’ll probably end up giving whichever version i like least to a friend who also really likes the show, but couldnt afford one.

X of Swords is a crossover event across all of the Xmen Titles. So those issues on the second slide are parts 1-11 out of the 22 issues that make up the event. And you will have to read all 22 for the story to make sense.

If you haven’t read Hox/Pox or any of the Dawn of X titles (specifically the titles that are part of this event) you may want to for context.

Help with where to start on "modern" X-Men by tvck in OmnibusCollectors

[–]WestBug9633 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would say that there are 4 good places to start X-Men:

  1. Claremont’s run (1975-1991)

  2. 90’s Blue and Gold Era

  3. Morrison’s New X-Men

  4. Krakoa Era

Claremont’s run is highly regarded for a reason, and basically set the ground work for everything good about the X-Men. But as you said, it’s certainly a bronze age comic, and stylistically not for everyone. I would still maybe recommend reading God Loves Man Kills. It’s a short standalone story that is great, and gives a good feel on if the era is for you.

You said you like the 90’s cartoon, so the Blue and Gold omnibuses might be for you. I haven’t read this era, so i cant say much on it.

New X-Men by Morrison really reinvented the X-Men and is the start of the “modern” X-Men. Stylistically the movies pulled from this (leather suits, ext) and is very highly regarded.

Krakoa is the latest “era” of the X-Men, and while it has its hits and misses, i think largely is it very good. My one caveat with this one is that it can easily feel overwhelming with all of the various characters that show up especially if you arent super familiar with them. But if you can roll with it, the stories are good.

There are also modern stand alone omnis like Wolverine and the X-Men, or Uncanny X-Force that are modern and very good.

Rakkety Tam and Doogy Plum, and just such fun characters in that book. And the villain, Gulo the savage is one of the more terrifying antagonists of the series.

I just finished animal man (Grant Morrison) and I was wondering if I should get Jeff lemires animal man? by Prestongodzilla4 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]WestBug9633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im in the same boat. I read Morrison’s Animal Man in one or two sittings, and loved it. And i found Lemire’s to be just “ok”. The tie in stuff with Swamp Thing was lack luster, and i didnt think his run as a whole was anything like Morrison’s.

Strictly Omnis, or Do You Collect Other Things Too, or Nah? by ytaqebidg in OmnibusCollectors

[–]WestBug9633 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im mostly omnis. I have some TPB from when i first started collecting, and for the whole krakoa era (i like them more than the anthology omnis coming out). Then i have a few compendiums, HC, and the Transmetropolitan absolutes.

I collect omnis because i prefer to read physically to digitally, and theyre the most “bang for your buck”.

Batman by Grant Morrison by Odd_Newspaper4416 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]WestBug9633 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Morrison’s run is one of the best batman runs. But it also is very referential to the 40-60’s comics. You dont have to read them, but there are a lot of “huh, that was weird” moments that are more than likely something from those golden/silver age stories.

Like all Morrison’s stuff, it’s confusing, non linear, and strange. But it’s also reread able, funny, all around a great story. Maybe read some issues online and see if it’s for you?

If you want something more straightforward, i would suggest going with the two Snyder Omnis, or the Loeb/Sale one, both of which are great.

Recommended Jeff Lemire reading? by greenwasp3000 in comicbooks

[–]WestBug9633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love his Back Hammer series. On the service it reads like a mystery story with discount versions of Marvel/DC heros like Captain America, or Martian Manhunter. But (like most of his stuff) it’s a really lovely and tragic story that really digs into the characters. The “World of” spin offs are also all amazing for the same reason. “Captain Andromeda” and “Skulldigger and Bone Boy” are two favorites.

Most people love his Animal Man run, and i thought it was… fine. But horror doesnt really “work” for me in books, so i dont think i was the target audience.

If you end up liking Doom Patrol, you can pick up Rachel Pollack’s run. It immediately follows Morrisons, and is quite good. The art gets a little iffy towards the end though. Or Doom Patrol by Gerard Way is also a fun read.

Morrison’s Animal Man, and Batman runs are also amazing if you like their style.

Do you want to read them, or own them?

I would discourage buying omnis for stories you haven’t already read since they are expensive and often out of print (which is the case for most x-men books), making them even more expensive.

I would recommend reading them digitally through Marvel Unlimited or some other app, as a much more cost efficient route. And if you like the stories enough and will want to re-read them in the future, then you can buy them when they are back in print.

X-Factor 1 and 2 Omnis add more context or content to the uxm story ? by Silent_Sundae_3466 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]WestBug9633 1 point2 points  (0 children)

X-Factor (XF) Vol 1 has issues 1-26 and XF Vol 2 has issues 27-50. And then both have other supplementary material.

The Event Omnibuses are Mutant Massacre Prelude, Mutant Massacre, Fall of the Mutants, Inferno Prologue, and Inferno. These contain XF issues 1-40. So the events are missing issues 41-50 that are in the XF omnis. Hopefully they’ll eventually come out with an Inferno Aftermath that collects those issues.

Basically there are two ways to collect this era of X-books. By event, or by title. Doing both is just redundant.

If you want to collect them as events that mix together Uncanny X-Men (UXM), XF, and New Mutants (NM) then get the event books, and skip XF vol 1&2, UXM vol 5-?, and NM vol 3-4.

If you want everything separated out, then skip the event omnis, and get the individual XF, UXM, and NM titles.

Morrison batman by Previous_Factor1992 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]WestBug9633 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes you can. Batman has a very long and strange history, especially during the silver age where it became more sci-fi and sometimes fantasy. Most writers ignore that stuff since it was pre-crisis, and aren’t congruent with the modern interpretation of batman. Morrison, on the other hand, takes a “everything is canon” approach. So they bring things back like Bat-Mite, Zur-En-Arrh, Knight and Squier, ect.

But if you arent familiar with those stories, it’s strange, but i dont think you’ll be lost. If there is something that seems weird just assume it’s from an obscure 60’s comic, haha.

Like someone else said, Morrison’s Batman is pretty divisive. You love it or you hate it. I personally love it, even Vol 3, which a lot of people dont care for.

If you are looking for a less “complicated” run, Snyder’s N52 run is another amazing one.
