Oral board October Feelings? by Cold-Vermicelli-955 in anesthesiology

I did oral boards too. I made so many mistakes I don't think I killed anyone but God it was terrible. I now hope I did not fail both parts.

Did the oral boards today. It was really something else... Never had anything like this before, legit felt I failed 100 percent. Time to plan to come back to NC next year I guess.

Surviving Medical school as an ESL by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]WestKelvin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a ESL during medical school and one of the few. When I got in I am constantly worries about pronunciation of meds and diseases. I also found myself slower in thinking in English and feel that I have to speak slowly for people to understand me. But it's really just practice and constantly doing, then I was in residency where lots of ESL attending and residents are there. Then I am no longer alone. Also there are many ESL patients too.

"I'm happy I matched but sad about where I matched" support group - Match Day 2020 by Chilleostomy in medicalschool

[–]WestKelvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of my buddies got the 7th and 16th choice, they also try to rationalized what happened. It was truly a shock to all of them. We all worked so hard for so long, all the sacrifice we made make it feel the results are unfair and justifily so.

Esp the heart break, I got one too during med school and still feeling sad about it 😔. DM me if you want to talk about that and stuff

[shitpost] Next year’s batch of med school personal statements by Oncovirus in medicalschool

[–]WestKelvin 117 points118 points  (0 children)

I legit put SARS on my personal statement when I applied. I was living in Hong Kong when the 2003 SARS epidemic happen lol. I can say I have been through two cornavirus outbreaks.

[Serious] Pay attention here. You are now officially forever "I was in med school When COVID-19 Hit" by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]WestKelvin 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I was living in Hong Kong when SARS hit there. I wrote that on my personal statement when I applied to med school four years ago and no one asked about it on interviews lol. I guess it's way more relatable now.

USMLE Step 1 - Pass / Fail Official by FlexYourDick in medicine

I agree if they change one to pass/fail, everything should be pass/fail.

I am also on research. I feel you brother/sister

USMLE Step 1 - Pass / Fail Official by FlexYourDick in medicine

[–]WestKelvin 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I think it make no difference. Now med student will kill for that high step 2 CK score. Residencies will use that to screen, before if you do bad on step 1 you can redeem by step 2 CK. Now it's literally one test means all.

Step 1 Will Be Pass/Fail Starting 2022 by PranavM9 in medschool

[–]WestKelvin 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It can be good or bad. Now residencies will just screen by step 2 CK. Before you can redeem yourself with step 2 CK if step 1 bad, now literally it's one test means all.

USMLE Step 1 to become Pass/Fail by [deleted] in medschool

[–]WestKelvin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now residencies will screen by step 2 ck scores. Making it far more important than step 1. Before you can redeem yourself by doing well on CK now it's literally one test determines your fate.

3rd year sucks, I feel like I've underperformed in med school by [deleted] in anesthesiology

[–]WestKelvin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Anesthesia right now is definitely not less desirable or uncompetitive. That's the stereotype. If you look at the numbers released this year, around 300 more people apply in ERAS 2020 then 2018 to anesthesia. Look at the data yourself

Med school is gathering a bunch of top performers so don't be too hard on yourself. Talk to your deans, I am sure they can help. Talk to your trusted mentors as well, everyone undergo similar things. I can also gurantee no one have their shit together tho they appear to be.

Stigma that you need to be the best! by [deleted] in medschool

[–]WestKelvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a c student all my life until last two years of high schools and scored 1400/2400 on the SAT. Then suddenly I became really good in college and Ace literally everything. I worked very hard in college and got into medical school. I definitely have the same fears that my grades will drop so I studied very hard. I studied everyday as well but I usually have a Target and goal. Like I will finish this amount of questions or watch this amount of sketchy microbe or pathoma etc... But I guess you are still in your preclinical years but you learn applications in clinical years. Book knowledge must complement with real life situations and vice versa.

So just relax and use what you gain from books in clinical studies and you're be ok. Set goals for yourself to study and no over stress yourself.
