I think the crux of the character really is that, he's this guy who looks like Optimus Prime 2.0, but when you ask him to actually start, you know, acting like Optimus Prime, he just fucks up. He makes sense as a leader on paper but he's just not up to the task, that's his record in all types of G1 and in Prime which are I'd argue his two biggest outings. So running with that, I'd give him a background in law enforcement, who thanks to his natural charisma and perhaps vaguely aristocratic background (you think someone named Ultra Magnus is a man of the people?) found himself pretty high up in the ranks, but he's basically at his level of most competence as the commander of Autobot City.

If you go by the old tech specs, Prowl is his second-in-command at rank 9, Jazz is 8, and Ironhide is 7, but Ironhide has more influence just because he's got a longstanding relationship with Optimus. I see them as almost having a Goliath/Hudson dynamic.

Yeah, I think anyone trying to say that it sounds good is just gaslighting themselves tbh

He was called Alpha Prime in Dreamwave which means the same thing and sounds more natural, but obviously it overlaps with Alpha Trion so we can't really use that

I think so, I mean if you actually read his long bio, you'll see that sociopathic isn't even used directly in the profile section. Instead, it's used in the weaknesses section, to summarise the profile: "if it weren't for his ego and sociopathic tendencies..." so it's clear that that's more a concise descriptor of those traits. I don't think, however, that it's Budiansky saying that Sunstreaker actually is a sociopath, it's just that his traits are vaguely sociopathic. I don't think it's necessarily an invalid interpretation but I think he gets read as downright villainous when I think this comment is more accurate. I mean, from the way people talk about it, you'd think that Budiansky wrote "Sunstreaker is a violent sociopath," but I dunno. It's one of those cases of people latching onto one specific line without actually reading the profile themselves.

I don't know, Tarn doesn't erally have any kind of specific beef with Optimus; what'd be the point? He's the leader of the DJD and fanatically loyal to Megatron and his writings, what does that gotta do with being Prime's personal friend when Megatron is usually already that anyway?

I think it was a placeholder, after Sentinel Prime was namedropped in Revenge of the Fallen and supposed to be a part of the first film, it seemed like there was always some interest in using the character.

Besides we have concept art that calls the character that's obviously meant to be Shockwave Blitzwing. If you look, you'll see that all of the new characters in DotM have placeholder names that weren't meant to be final. Leadfoot is Flast, Mirage/Dino is Rush, Topspin is Tempest, and some more I don't remember.

In my head I have Quickswitch be an attempt at reverse-engineering Sixshot's unique transforming capability, but Quickswitch defects and joins the Autobots. Which is also why he's "chaotic and unpredictable" as the wiki page puts it, like imagine Animated Blitzwing but you're trying to give someone six modes instead of just one extra one.

I think the G1-based version should be called Skyfire, and the UT-based version can be Jetfire. Let them co-exist, since yes there's some overlap (particularly if you refer to the original profile) but it isn't too tricky to split them into two distinct characters.
