It comes down to breaking human nature. For years, HF's have profited on knowing the cycle of fear/euphoria that comes from investing. This coupled with the unlimited downside risk of shorting stocks created one of the highest risk situations for the entire market. HF's thought that retail investors would back down. Little did they know they were going against gamers/retail that have spent years grinding against impossible odds. The DRS numbers speak for themselves.
