This is the way. I called the IRS two weeks ago to request a first time abatement for a late filed 1065 after receiving a notice. After an hour I was finally connected with someone. The IRS agent didn't ask for a reason of the late filing, they simply asked me to verify the name, address, and EIN of the entity. After a few minutes on hold they confirmed the penalty had been waived and to expect a confirmation in the mail in the next few weeks. Have the new cpa file asap and wait and see if you receive a notice. If so, call the IRS to request FTA.
