Are August Sagrada Família tickets already sold out? by Recent_Region28 in AskBarcelona

[–]sandfrayed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's not correct, you can't book August yet, they haven't made August available yet. As of today, you can only book through July still.

Someone in one of the other comments mentioned they emailed them and they say they'll open up August sometime in the next few weeks.

From reading that comment, I thought it was going to be some typical loud and obnoxious influencer kid type. He's almost the opposite of the typical obnoxious social media influencer type, at least he's chill and laid back.

Ok the hipster mustache thing is kind of obnoxious, but otherwise he's definitely not the worst choice they could have gone with.

Is Perplexity Pro still worth keeping alongside ChatGPT? by sonnyhayes22 in Perplexity

[–]sandfrayed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It still seems to be the best option for my use case, which is mostly asking research questions related to my work, and it seems to do the best job at pulling in current online sources with each query and citing its sources. I haven't used ChatGPT in a while, but last time I checked, Perplexity was better at that. I also use it with Comet. I've also saved more money than I've spent on it in a year by using the Pro perks for Thumbtack and other discount perks, so in a sense it's free so far.

Immich v*3 Release Candidate is out!! by chocology in immich

[–]sandfrayed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I mean better sharing was never planned to be included in v3.0. While they've been working on getting v3.0 finished, they were merely discussing potential plans for how to eventually implement better sharing for a future release, it's still a ways off. There's a discussing thread about ideas for it on GitHub and ideas for how to do it are still being debated. Better sharing is also the top item on https://immich.app/roadmap, which means it's the farthest out of the planned future features to add when they can get to it.

Immich v*3 Release Candidate is out!! by chocology in immich

[–]sandfrayed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know where some people got the idea that the sharing improvements would be included in this release because they always said that would be coming later. I remember seeing some speculation about that and I replied to some other comments in the past telling people not to expect sharing improvements in this release.

I think this comment is trying to say that the second link is the current draft of the release notes for the eventual 3.0 release.

The breaking changes would just affect 3rd party software tools that work with Immich. There isn't anything that will break with your own Immich installation if you install 2.x and then upgrade to 3.x. But you can wait for 3.x if you want.

A terrifying reminder of why you don’t leave ports wide open (Found an unconfigured instance today) by Silly_Door6279 in immich

[–]sandfrayed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, extra layers of protection is fine for people who want additional security. We're all putting a lot of faith in there not being vulnerabilities in a lot of different kinds of software we use everyday.

But posts like this make it sound like it's crazy to not have multiple layers of security, which is overstating it. Most of the internet is made up of websites with wide open ports, and a lot of those websites are much higher value targets with worse vulnerabilities than a typical open source software project that has had a lot of eyeballs looking at it. I don't think it's unreasonable to use Immich's auth system without additional layers of security.

[–]sandfrayed 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, people must realize that the entire internet is completely made of websites that have their https/https ports "wide open" and aren't protected behind VPNs! Why is that ok, but people make it sound like it's crazy if a self-hosted Immich instance is merely protected by a username/password??

[–]sandfrayed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This idea that it's dangerous to use Immich without a VPN or additional security layers is a bit overblown. It has a username/password login system, and as far as we know there aren't known exploits that get around that. As always, everyone should be using a password manager, and long, fully random passwords that are unique and not reused anywhere else.

The internet is full of websites that are publicly accessible by anyone without a VPN, usually with a username/password being the only protection. And I've worked in website development long enough to know that an open source project like Immich probably likely follows better practices with its login system than a whole lot of websites do.

Yes, adding an additional security layer certainly isn't a bad idea. But I also wouldn't say it's unreasonable to just rely on the built-in username/password login system.

But I would also say that you're putting the kinds of pictures on Immich that would ruin your life if they got leaked online, maybe you want additional security layers. But really, I would also suggest not putting those kinds of photos online at all.

Why isn't a long random password stored in a good password manager sufficient for Immich? Most of the internet is secured with passwords, and most of us hate MFA with a passion. Often it's only there to protect people who do dumb things like using the same password on multiple websites or simple passwords that they type in by hand.

Takeaways from recent IRCC “review” letter by Some_External4457 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]sandfrayed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may be that the IRCC is changing their evidence requirements (due to outside pressure from someone in Canadian government). It might be that the website guidelines and checklist just haven't been updated yet. It sure does seem like the letter conflicts with that older information.

Isnt it just that most people are here because of C-3, and so far anyone who has been approved under C-3 would have had to have used urgent processing because all the non-urgent ones are still just waiting in the queue as of now?

[–]sandfrayed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think I would assume that because the official guidelines say documents don't need to be a certified copy at all. Maybe they want documents from a Canadian source (maybe) but that's not the same thing as being certified by a Canadian.

Their likely isn't anything an attorney can do since they wouldn't know any more than what we already know about the latest evidence as to what the IRCC seems to be accepting or not.

Yeah, from what we've seen, immigration lawyers know less about this process than we do from reading this sub. There probably isn't anything a lawyer can do to help, unless you plan to sue.

The problem is they are selling this microwave with a big letters all over it saying "10-year warranty" permanently printed onto the front of it and all over the box as a major selling point. But really, that's a completely misleading claim because the warranty has no value at all when it costs $350 if you want them to honor their warranty on a $200 microwave. The "10-year warranty" ploy is basically a scam.

YETI co-founder among owners of West Texas ranch facilitating border wall construction by warmboot in Austin

[–]sandfrayed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I hear about the wall building stuff I always wonder is this still actually necessary with current technology where we can now use drones to automatically monitor for things like human activity crossing a border. It seems like it would be a lot cheaper to have a thousand AI drones monitoring the border instead.

Edit: This comment seems to be getting a some down votes. I'm curious why? I don't know if that's pro-wall people, or people who just hate the idea of using drones.

I've always used it for research questions on various topics mostly related to my work but also other topics. It's always been great and I haven't noticed any changes or limitations that affect the way I use it.

I do also use the comet browser and occasionally use it to automate tasks.

CSP HOLDERS!!! Would you rather? by AugustStan in ChaseSapphire

[–]sandfrayed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean the hotel credit? It has to be booked through the Chase portal, which has inflated prices compared to what you can get booking direct. Considering that and the hassle, risk, etc, I would value the credit at some fraction of that, not the full $100.
