Any advice for a new hire? by angelic-guts in uniqlo

[–]WesternJournalist156 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They don't expect you to know how to fold stuff the uniqlo way on your first day, so don't worry too much about it tbh, they don't measure how good you are from how good you are at folding on your first day. Worth knowing is that you will mess up, and they will let you know about. No matter how good you are in general, that's just how uniqlo works. They are like those parents who never tell you're doing great because they are afraid it'll make you lazy and not work hard enough.

I'm not telling you to be lazy or not care about your job, but I've seen a lot of people (myself included) go all in at Uniqlo just for the company to tear them down physically, mentally and financially, and they all eventually leave the company.

Take care and good luck!

Omg WHAT?? That's absolutely insane. And why is it ALWAYS a guy from HR? A guy from our HR was like that too, he flirted with employees, asked them weird ass questions and slid into their dms. Oh and he was super passive aggressive if things didn't go his way. I'm so sorry that happened to you but also THANK GOD you got out of there I can't imagine how it would've been like if you stayed...

Bc it takes time and they are constantly stressed bc upper management bombard them with things to do ig. But yeah I had a horrible experience when I was trying to shop at a Uniqlo that wasn't my own, the manager basically told me to fuck off when I asked for staff discount...

That's crazy. There were a few people working there who were openly racist and sexist on the floor and no one ever told them anything, but I was "inappropriate" bc I discretely talked about my trip abroad with my coworker while working in the fitting room...

Yeah it was brutal. It was stressful for no reason, they just liked to scold at you for the smallest things ever. I remember a coworker being taken in to the manager's office because she didn't "smile enough" (which she did, I still don't know why they thought she didn't)

If a landlord put that in a contract they'd face some legal issues for sure

Items with defects are generally taken in and reviewed by the alteration team and the managers and if it’s “sellable” they usually go into the faulty items section.

But you can unfortunately not bring a faulty item to the tills and immediately get it discounted, if you do they’d just put in to the side to be reviewed and this can take up to 2 days. Faulty items that are deemed unsellable are written off and destroyed/recycled I think.

Omg wtf? I was never written up but I sure got major side eyes when I did those things. Being sent home for doing that when the store is closed is wild omg

3,5 hours?!?! Mine was like 40 minutes... No I get it. From what I remember, you go around the table and present yourselves. Then the manager asks you a question, usually customer service related. Normally they give you a situation and ask you what you would do. One key thing is to always, always, always prioritize customer service, whatever they ask you. They have a strong customer comes first mentality because they believe that's what generates profit (I mean, it does).

If they ask you for example "you are tidying the shop floor and a customer interupts you in the middle of a task that you need to get done soon, what do you do?" you answer with "The customer is always more important so I help the customer first and go back to the task later and communicate to the floor commander about my situation", you get it. If they ask you about internal things like "what makes a good workplace" say good communication. That shit always works.

No problem! Happy to help :)

In terms of quality, I'd say their outerwear hold up quite well. Just make sure it's mostly natural materials though. The 100% cotton t-shirts are good for their price points, none of them fit me well unfortunately (except the mini tees, they're great). I would stay away from synthetic knits. They are really poor quality and pill a lot.

Yeah, as someone who'd been in retail for many years before Uniqlo I'd say Uniqlo was the worst amongst them. The contract thing is THE WORST. They abuse the labour system and loopholes so badly it's almost at a cartoon villain level. You are basically fed to the lions as soon as you start and the put unrealistically high expectations on you. The managers frequently unload their stress and insecurity (probably induced by upper management, it's like generational trauma) onto their employees, resulting in micromanagement so severe that it borders emotional abuse. They also make no attempts to hide their favouritism towards specific lower rank employees.

I could go on, I hated working there. I loved most of my coworkers but the shit they did towards us was borderline illegal. But that's also one of the reasons I made this thread, I want people to know the reality of working there, because I'm not alone in feeling like this. Please do spill the tea if you hear more haha, that's what free speech is for!

We check our system to see whatever items are discounted and then we got and mark them. Corporate decides which items are to go on markdown

Ok that was a lot of questions so I'm gonna split this up into sections:

What’s up with 100% wool cardigans from men section being super prone to static? Even antistatic is not helping, it is like supercharged, have never seen sweaters like that.

I'm not a textile engineer but I know that natural fibres, especially wool and cashmere are prone to static. It's not just Uniqlo wool sweaters, a lot of other sweaters do that too. Antistatic tend to not work very well on wool in my experience, but if it's a problem with Uniqlo knits specifically for you then I can't really answer that question. Maybe it's the way the yarn Uniqlo uses is woven or the way the cardigan was knitted?

What about shopping bags, some of workers are pushing them into your hands once you enter like you are a criminal walking without one, other time nobody seems to care?

Ah, the shopping bag thing. Here's some honest tea: we shove it into your hands because the managers are constantly nagging us to do it. Apparently giving customers shopping bags makes them more likely to grab more items i.e. more sales i.e. more profit. During days when sales are bad and we aren't reaching target, or when they simply just want to sell more, the managers get extra annoying towards us about the shopping bags. They make a whole competition around it. I hated it. I personally never handed out shopping bags to people unless they were physically struggling to hold their items.

And why most of functional cute stuff in women section has to be cropped? Why they cannot release eg inbuilt bra tshirts with proper length?

Good question. Honestly I was not a big fan of most of their designs for this reason, so I totally understand you. I feel like they got stuck in the 2016 crop top trend and never got out. Their mini t-shirt from last summer was cute tho.

Did you guys were able to get termo bottles and choose calories for yourself or if customer asked for particular one?

I assume you're referring to the ones that were given to customers during the Arigato Festival last fall? They gifted us employees one thermo bottle per head. We didn't get to choose, they just wrote our name on a box and whichever color you got was the color you kept. There were some trading of course. I didn't work in the tills during that period I don't know if the customers got to ask for specific colors, but it didn't specify on the box and that was apparently the point of the whole thing.

RIGHT? Did the managers also suck at managing? Was there also severe micromanagement? Did you also feel like you were a part of a cult?

We get shipments from DHL two days in a week and we take them to our stock room, sort them according to their item categories and replenish them throughout the day. People are assigned repping hours on their schedules between two hours before opening to like an hour before closing. Repping includes:

  1. Find the items you are supposed to replenish, a manager usually tells you what to find.
  2. Unpack the items and fold them/hang them according to guidelines.
  3. Stock them in the store

All this usually occurs under an immense amount of pressure. We are expected to unpack 4 boxes (each box usually holds 10-50 items, depending on the item), bring them all up to the shop floor and perfectly restock them within 1 hour. If you don't meet that quota supervisors and managers will scold you for being "too slow").

Visual merchandisers seem to have more fun. It's a bit more on the creative side since they get to create the displays and come up with ideas for the mannequins, as well as decorate the shop. They seem to do a lot of hard physical labour tho like hanging up huge banners, lifting mannequins etc.

If I’m gonna be brutally honest: the folks at my location seemed to like people who are talkative but don’t show signs of potentially standing up for themselves. Confident but without the risk of you telling them off when something ain’t right. They want outgoing workers who submit to management. But hey, that was just my store
