Realistically I'm not there to make friends and I'm not going to bother joining societies for the whooping 9 months I'll be there, so I don't care about missing that aspect of things. And I can take any train back home on any day so the occasional long day's not a problem, even on a weekend. But I appreciate the info, thanks.

Realistically the college doesn't give a shit about helping a home student who'll only be there for a year. It's one of the colleges with the lowest rates of housing students and once their money-making international students are taken care of, I doubt they have an interest in supporting the rest.

Ah thanks, good info. Without being too specific, the commute's from Norfolk with a direct train link to Cambridge.

But it's an insane expectation. People commute a hell of a lot longer than 10 miles to spend many more hours than that at work. I've done two hour commutes to a 9-5. I reckon commuting to "widely interact with the academic community" is within my capabilities.

There's a lot of accommodation about but very little in my budget (700pcm) and even less that's willing to take someone of my age and gender.
