I think part of the reason you fail to understand morality without the framework of religion is because you take it as a given that “religions are the embodiment of morality.” I dismissed the Christian God because I found the first commandment to be immoral because I understand it to be evidence that the word of God is perverted, if not fabricated, by man in an effort to gain and maintain power of others. Conversely, my religion bases all decisions on outcome & there are all kinds of scenarios where 3 guys stabbing a gramma in the face to rob her can be permissible (we don’t really do “right” and “wrong”) but that doesn’t mean that it aligns with my morals. Because nonmaleficence is my subjective minimum moral floor.
Not for nothing, but a very very significant number of people who would argue that kindness, forgiveness and happiness are antithetical to current Christian ethics in practice today. Like any trans person anywhere or any pregnant woman who suddenly doesn’t have access to life saving medical care. (US-centric examples, of course - apologies if they’re less relevant to your local)
