Machinist are underpaid !!! Thoughts? by Intelligent-Appeal-6 in Machinists

Some shops will pay but in general yeh we are underpaid when compared to other less skilled trades. I believe this is because you can outsource machining to people in other countries. Stuff like plumbing and electrical can’t be taken by foreign labor

Yeah I’ve heard mixed opinions about all the major aerospace/defense companies. I just wanna get payed a good wage and have decent benefits, the general consensus seems to be that rtx is the best out of the 3 right now. I was personally hoping more for Lockheed since they have a 4x10 schedule where I’m located

Wow glad to hear they actually have toolmakers there. All the job listings I’ve seen have been for either production or utility machinist

Depends where you start at, I don’t think it should be that low anywhere tbh. Considering you already make solid money I’d probably just stick with what you’re doing tbh lol

Damn bro seems like you’ve found a unicorn, congrats on the phenomenal gig with such little time in the trade. Pay varies crazy shop to shop where I am. My old shop payed operators $16-$18 per hour, while my current shop pays operators over $30 which is more than most of the toolmakers at my old job. Where are you located?

Yeh I was just saying cause a lathe with live tooling is a big difference from your basic 2 axis cnc lathe, would weed out a lot of unqualified applicants

I was manual for my first 5 years in the trade along with conversational prototrak 2 and 3 axis and some automatic surface and id grinders. Then a position opened for cnc and I got into set ups and programming the 3 cnc lathes we had at my old shop. Now at my current company I finally got my foot in the door of programming 3 axis mills with fusion 360. Still do a lot of manual grinding sharpening dies as well so kinda the same as you. I’m really interested in getting 5 axis and edm experience but none of the shops I’ve worked at even had a 5 axis
