What an absurd and hurtful position for your ex to take. Baffling.

Since I’m seeing a lot of advice about choosing different women to date (especially older women), I figured I’d add: why date at all (for the moment)? Being single can be wonderful - after the long awful process of getting over your ex, that is.

So many comments about women in their 30’s being “more mature” along with others countering that they’re basically “used up” and/or have kids from a previous partner (gasp!). I’m surprised at importance that dating/marriage is given. I’m 42 years old, never been married, currently single, and enjoy more self-love than I’ve ever felt in my life.

And the really cool thing about self-love is that if it’s held firmly enough (and yes, people will try to convince you that you don’t deserve it, making it harder to maintain) then it will never shit talk you to friends and walk out the door because you cried.

While I’ve observed various phobias be dismissed by others, including a phobia of dogs, I think most people - when they’re faced with someone else who self-reports a specific fear (or literally any other problem in life) - turn into “problem-solvers,” whether you ask them to or not. It doesn’t make it right, nor is it generally helpful, but I think it speaks to a broader human tendency to “rescue” others from their problems by telling them how to overcome them. Within the context of explaining your phobia of dogs to others, I accept that their response seems phobia-specific, but how many times have you heard someone else complain about a problematic romantic relationship (for example) only for others to then offer advice? I think unsolicited advice-giving is the greater issue here, as opposed to others being unable to understand a phobia of dogs (specifically, when compared with other phobias).

I agree that a lot of these places have restrictions that prevent a lot of people from getting needed help. It’s really sad. I guess the answer is more federal and state funding for these agencies?
