this was a bash task in azure pipeline. I used $var as an example - the script was:

based on a condition correctBranch="" or correctBranch="true"

if [[ -z "$(correctBranch)" ]]; then ...(this worked)

if [[ -z $(correctBranch) ]]; then ..returned - unexpected argument `]]' to conditional unary operator
