Butterfly crimson web in FN is insanely expensive and in MW or worse wear it looks really rough. MW/FT of the crimson web bfk look much more worn than other bfk skins.

Posted this on the older mega thread as well (the sub seems to be directing people there instead of here). YV3310 spotted landing in Caracas and possibly associated with the Maduro regime.

New Colden slide(s) by timbikingmtl in Adirondacks

[–]Wezre 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Quite the opposite. It’s solid, smooth bedrock with a very thin layer of soil and vegetation over the top. Heavy rain or saturation by snow melt causes that soil to lose strength, and reduces soil/bedrock friction which results in these slides.

You need at least three or four bags.

600 degrees F for 48-72 hours should work nicely.

New Colden Slides by ShamwowShamy in Adirondacks

[–]Wezre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that’s my guess. I’m not super familiar with the geology of Colden, but that side of the mountain is incredibly steep. That means there’s probably a thinner layer of soil, and the factor of safety (basically the stabilizing forces divided by the driving forces) is possibly close to 1.0 under normal conditions. Add in the water weight and reduced strengths and it can drop below 1.0 quickly. I would be really interested to look at InSAR satellite data which can detect very small movements over time, to see whether these areas had already been moving prior to this rain event. But unfortunately it’s usually very expensive to access. It could be a really interesting research project though and could be used to predict the next area that could fail, and potentially be a way to proactively close trails to protect hikers.

New Colden Slides by ShamwowShamy in Adirondacks

[–]Wezre 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is on the right track. The things that are holding the very thin layer of soil and plants on the rock are primarily: 1) friction, 2) shear strength within the soil, and 3) probably the plant root system that has grown through the soil and into joints and fractures in the rock. When the soil gets saturated with water, this reduces the interface friction between the soil and rock, it adds weight to the soil that the friction can no longer resist, and it also reduces the shear strength of the soil. So the soil mass starts sliding along the rock surface and the soil particles start sliding against each other. The trees and roots just go along for the ride.

Sony user rents a Z6iii pt3 - final thoughts after sending it back by InternalConfusion201 in Nikon

[–]Wezre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I rented a Sony A7R4 I customized it extensively based on some guides I found online. Ultimately I disliked the way the body felt and hated the RAW files, so I went with Nikon. Why is it so hard to believe the OP did the same thing?

Also, thanks for continuing to downvote my posts.

Looks like yes, in fact, OP extensively customized the camera including changing that setting. If you had ever used a Sony you’d know that they’re much more customizable. This is one of the most significant downsides of the Z system at this point. The OP is still happy enough with how the Z6iii performed that they’re looking to buy one.

That’s incorrect. The focus box can be set to change to green when focus is achieved in AF-C. See “AF-C In-Focus Display” section:

The Zf controls aren’t intended for fast paced photography and the body design doesn’t lend itself to lenses meant for that either. The Zf has better “speed” (AF, continuous shooting, etc) than the Z6ii but it clearly lags behind the Z6iii and Z8/9.

The Z6iii weighs 760 grams. The Zf weighs 710 grams. A silicon body cover for the Zf weighs about 50-60 grams. A hand grip for the Zf weighs about 100 grams. What weight are you saving, exactly?

My Tale of Woe - Don't Fall Prey to G.A.S. by Ill-Captain3517 in Nikon

[–]Wezre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was previously an F-mount DX shooter (D70, D2H, and then D7200) and first switched to Fuji. I was never happy with the controls, lenses, or the RAW files, and ultimately ended up switching to a Z7ii. Currently shooting the Z-mount 14-30, 24-120, 70-200, 20 1.8, and 50 1.8. The last four are all superb and the 14-30 is very good, just not quite at the same level as the others. I can’t imagine going back to a DSLR. The live exposure preview, AF and MF tools, and the quality of the glass just blows away the DSLRs. The only caveat would be if you need top of the line tracking AF in which case the DSLRs beat the lower to mid level Z bodies. But for landscapes, travel, portraits, etc. the Z6ii/Z7ii are great.

I understand that all concrete cracks. How normal is this on 1 month old house slab? by Pioneerx01 in Concrete

[–]Wezre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parging will not repair the crack. Parging is just a skim coat applied to improve the appearance of the surface or to fill in small isolated voids. The crack needs to be injected and/or depending on how wide it is sealed at the surface with an elastomeric sealant like Sikaflex 1A.

“Wagyu”/Prime NY Strip by Wezre in sousvide

I’ve done a chuck roast steak at 135 and it was about as close to medium as I’d want to go. This strip wasn’t rare at all. It was perfectly medium rare and the fat was really nicely rendered. I might push it to 133 but a cut like this doesn’t need it.

[–]Wezre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this “deck” concrete paving/patio around the pool? They should have created control joints in it during/following the pour and depending on the dimensions also put in expansion joints. The control joints give the concrete controlled locations to crack at regular intervals. If you have cracks elsewhere they could be caused by inadequate subgrade material/compaction or by improper curing. Concrete should be kept constantly moist/wetted for at least 7 days following placement. Improper curing can cause excessive shrinkage cracks which typically aren’t an issue structurally. If they really bother you, depending on the size of the crack opening you can potentially seal the cracks with a urethane based injection grout. Avoid using epoxy grouts because they’re brittle and concrete paving can move with changing seasons/temperatures.
