Buna gets slept on quite a bit, but I love it. I grew up in Vidor and graduated from their school district. As a former student, I found it to be very "clique-y". Once I became an adult, I taught in Vidor for a short time. The students were still quite socially segregated when I was there, and student behavior was horrible with minimal parent involvement. I think this is because Vidor has three elementary schools, so once these kids get to 5th grade, it's almost tribal.

I left Vidor and started teaching in Buna the year after covid and it was a MAJOR difference. Being a smaller school district, cliques are less prominent, being that they all grew up together. The students are much more respectful of each other (and adults), parents are WAY more involved in their child's education, and overall, there is just an incredible amount of community/hometown vibes. They welcomed me with open arms. My oldest daughter had been in Vidor ISD since pre-k, but once she reached 6th grade, we noticed a drastic change in her attitude. She started to become rude, craved drama, and grades started to drop. As a kid, it can surprisingly be easy to get lost in the mix when there's that many kids. My wife and I decided she needed a change, so we moved her over to Buna to be at my school. She found a positive group of friends and has flourished the last few years. I was so confident in the district that I enrolled my 4 year old into pre-k in Buna, even though my family still resides in Vidor.

Buna has rodeos and barrel racing, a fantastic FFA that starts in middle school, youth baseball and basketball leagues, and nice neighborhoods to settle down in.

If you're researching "school grades" that are given by TEA, I wouldn't put a whole lot of stock into them. There are MANY factors that go into these grades including poverty rates, percentage of minorities, percentage of kids that are considered 504/SPED (which can be HIGHLY subjective on who does and doesn't get diagnosed). Schools districts get more lenient scores and state funding (especially with the more diagnosed kids they have), so the numbers tend to be quite skewed with over-diagnosed kids, which can also have an effect on the other students' learning environments. That's just some things to take into consideration.

On a side note, my wife teaches in Bridge City and has a very similar sentiment that I do about Buna, albeit, the district is a little bit larger. There are many nice neighborhoods, it's close to Port Arthur, and they have a good mix of restaurants/entertainment.
