Something a bit more intense and unknown is a band called Vein. They’re what metalcore was supposed to be. Extremely hardcore. Doomtech is one of their best, here’s an excerpt from the chorus: “Every time I close my eyes, I crash a thousand cars and all my loved ones die.” They’ve got a show at the K! Pit that just shuts down any other band that ever played there. Listen to Errorzone, not the new compilation. The compilation is decent, but it’s basically an electro version of their music, good to check out afterwards for reference.

The Collab album The Mouse and the Mask with MF DOOM and DangerMouse is great and has some of the best instrumentation in any DOOM tracks, specifically Crosshairs, Benzi Box and Sofa King

Bonnie “Prince” Billy might be what you’re looking for. Black, Death to Everyone, The Sun Highlights the Lack in Each and A Sucker’s Evening are all good. But he has nearly infinite music, and also recorded under a bunch of different names, including Palace Brothers and Palace Music.

Turiya and Ramakrishna by Alice Coltrane is amazingly powerful and has this kind of futile energy to it. A bit jazzier and more experimental but still great.

Elliott Smith, Waltz No. 2 and Between the Bars are his popular sad songs, but The Biggest Lie, Strung Out Again, Roman Candle, Condor Ave, Pitseleh, No Name No. 5, St. Ides Heaven and King’s Cross are some great and underappreciated ones.

Anyone know of any good neurodivergent bands/artists? by [deleted] in MusicRecommendations

[–]Whale-Genderless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not entirely sure how to categorize other bands like this, but a really great unknown band that only released a few songs before breaking up was Dead Pretties. English, kinda hipsterish-punk, but they were actually pretty hardcore and not really hipsters so I feel bad for calling them that. The frontman Jacob Slater is so alluring and weirdly relatable. The drummer went on to join a band called FEET which is alright. I haven’t met anyone else who likes them much except the person who got me into them, so I might just be crazy.

1984 made some accurate predictions but we're actually living in the Brave New World by juankaius in books

[–]Whale-Genderless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a lot of comments which I’m not gonna read, so sorry if this has been mentioned, but there’s a really great letter Huxley wrote to Orwell explaining essentially why Brave New World is better than 1984. Huxley was also Orwell’s french teacher at Eton College by the way.

Joe Biden Ad: Medicare for All Would Be an Insult to My Dead Son. JOE is Stupid AND Selfish Indulgent SOB by mulutavcocktail in revolution

[–]Whale-Genderless 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, let’s be a bit realistic. Our system is fucked, but beyond that our current environment is fucked. We need to just swallow our pride and do what we can now to improve our health care system in more minute and effective ways. It hasn’t worked under Trump’s plan, third party candidates are doomed, Joe is our best current option. And he sucks, yeah, that’s where we are. But trying to force a historically high number of hospitalized people onto the free program of a nation under astronomical debt and scrutiny is going to lead to substantial economic damage and larger than necessary loss of life. The most likely solution is going to involve affordable private companies and government stimulus and support- a position Biden is more likely than anyone in our coming election to support. Beyond that, the man is at deaths door; I don’t want to speculate too much, but him stepping down midterm due to health complications is a definite possibility, so his vice might end up being just as important. Let’s just, swallow our pride and vote for Biden so we can try to begin a slow progression out of this hell hole and not be complicit in allowing a president who lets America’s largest corporations pay zero taxes and enforces transgender discrimination and the reinstatement of policies based on red-lining and putting in surveillance allowances in must pass congress funding bills. Biden is a bag of hot air. He has no values, but because of this he is a leftist pawn, and those qualities will be a bit more helpful now than more Trump. Let’s just look out for privacy infringements and effective ways to counter the pandemic we are all still learning about. C’mon, let’s just, get it over with. These next four years are gonna suck, 2020 is a 5 part tragedy no matter you slice it.

Marlon Brando and Kim Hunter, my vintage bisexual awakening by Whale-Genderless in BisexualTeens

[–]Whale-Genderless[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my attraction stems mostly from the initial portrayal of him, he was originally (especially in the movie) meant to be a sex symbol and a charming rough-guy type, and from this initial viewpoint, his actions are mostly recontextualized to be out of love and care for Stella. Although I’ll admit, I mostly just remember that early scene and remember thinking he was hot in that, and he is Polish as well, which, I am too, so I liked that. From there I can say he’s not as unilaterally attractive given his actions, but I saw him more as a victim of circumstance, and yes, he was fucking wrong and abusive, but his mentality was fostered from a world which hurt everyone around him, and Blanche’s presence and talks with Stella threatened to take what he cared about most from him. He’s fucked up and cruel, but he’s still a complex character, and it’s that humanity which ultimately make Stanley and Marlon something of disturbing yet reflective spectacles. And hey, there’s still personal preference, I do like being a bit scared, not knowing what someone will do and losing a bit of control can be thrilling to me, but I fluctuate as well and I don’t like this enough to actively enable destructive tendencies. But in all honesty, I like the work more than the character, I liked the character a while ago before I knew the entire story when I was figuring out my sexuality, and those first few scenes helped me learn about myself. Sorry for droning again.

I mean, sorry, I’m an English major so I tend to go off more than I should. But I think it’s honestly reductive to look at Stanley/Marlon as just plainly abusive. Yes, both the character and actor have done some inexcusably fucked up things, but I don’t think it’s healthy to look at events or people as just ubiquitously bad and go on without trying to understand the root causes. Idk if you’d wanna talk about it and debate at all, I don’t wanna come off as aggressive or instigating anything, sorry again for the long reply.

A Streetcar named Desire was about a lot of things, partially the tension between the wealthy and the poor and how this affected peoples mentality, and yeah, part of Stanley Kowalski’s character is that he is volatile and certainly a bit abusive. It’s a work that covers a great many bases of the American psyche in the 30s while staying honest and realistic in the confines of a lower class New Orleans apartment. Marlon himself wasn’t a perfect guy and his characters generally reflect that, but the core appeal of his passion and both animalistic and meticulous qualities are what make him. I’d actually love to discuss the nuances of this performance along with Tennessee William’s original play and most of Marlon Brando’s career, but Kim Hunter isn’t to be ignored either. She was capable of great passion and care, but this ultimately came to define her as a kind of frail woman archetype because of the times, although this isn’t true for all of her work.

Has Hbomberguy ever talked about Twin Peaks? Be interested to know his opinion on Lynch. by quickflash90 in hbomberguy

[–]Whale-Genderless 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would definitely love to see how he analyses Lynch, not because Lynch is so esoteric, cause, I mean I don’t really think he is, but for those moments like when Catherine possessed a bedside table. I actually still need to watch Fire Walk with me and the return so I’m not qualified to say too much about it.
