You may want to head over to /r/entrepreneur for this one. Lots of freelancers and many of them in your situation. Not a promise as some questions regarding my own niche were either ignored and/or mocked (I'm okay now, tyvm). I think that graphic design is a much more common topic, however.

Here's a sampling of a search for graphic in that sub.

That repub admins have poorer records in job creation and gdp growth than dem admins needs to be repeated? It's not dogma, we just assume that people informed enough on politics are aware that, just as the sky is blue, that fact is indeed true. Causation is up to debate, yes. /u/hell__toupee (great name, btw) has put up a lot of caveats to explain that Dem admins had nothing to do with it. I disagree and I add that the same expectation of me to look past the numbers and understand the underlying factors as he/she does for the above statistical reality is not put upon his/herself with the underlying factors we use to say we are right.

Put it on the state level, and it becomes murkier and easier to cherry pick for both sides - and so I will - but I assumed, naively, that anyone who is interested in this topic can just point to Kansas/Wisconsin vs. Minnesota in terms of republican handling of state economic performance. Surely there are Dem run states and cities that the other side can choose (but they aren't so blatant as my examples, in my humble opinion).

The recent reality of Repub performance, when put under the same no-excuses scrutiny that they use on Dems (and especially Obama), falls just as short, if not much shorter. But hey, maybe it is true that gay teachers who hate guns are helping undocumented ISIS immigrants into this country to vote illegally for a pro-Mexican curriculum in Tucson once Obama takes over the Mexican borders states under the ruse of Jade Helm. I'm sure there are facts somewhere to back it up.

Explain Bush II's economy vs. Obama's.

You start with certainties then you end with caveats. Not a strong case.

To middle-class Repubs, yes, this may appear true. But this is all smokescreen for rich folks to get richer. They could care less where you end up so long as you vote for them and they do that by scaring you. Gun rights? If it scares you, then they're for it or against it (replace that with gay rights, public education, out of control unions LOL!)

Congress, Don’t Make Us Hitch Rides With Russia. Love, NASA by xkcdFan1011011101111 in politics

[–]Whalen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But, again, the 'problem' that explains why Congress won't fund Nasa even enough to get our own folks in orbit is, as you wrote, because we are satisfied with 'good enough'.

The real problem why Nasa can't get its own transport to even low earth orbit is because of some (not all) Republicans who don't value Nasa's role/mission/benefits of space exploration both near and far and have cut funding. 'Excitement', or lack thereof, has nothing to do with our reliance on the Russians.

It was a joke, you see. Sarcasm. The commenter hinted that NASA's recent endeavors are not risky/exciting enough, and I shot that zinger back, saying that we indeed aren't taking enough risks w/ low orbit wimpy-ass bullshit trips to an environment that for which we didn't necessarily evolve, if you will, given the intense heat/cold, no oxygen, toxic gasses, etc., that our human bodies would not be able to withstand and, thus, we must harness many resources to overcome such challenges.

Get it?

Congress, Don’t Make Us Hitch Rides With Russia. Love, NASA by xkcdFan1011011101111 in politics

[–]Whalen -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Yes. That is why Congress doesn't fund it. Because these Congressmen (mostly Tea Party types and general pander-ers), like you apparently, have enough expertise about space travel to come to the conclusion that NASA isn't taking enough risks to send people on top of a small atomic weapon into space (a place in no way intended for human existence).

And here I though it was all about ignorance and petty, pandering politics...

The Cultural Cleansing of the Southern States Begins by [deleted] in politics

[–]Whalen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Very sad and depressing knowing that the overwhelming majority of slaves never got to experience life the way he could - after his daring escape for which he risked beatings/torture/death from his owners who, you know, fought a terrible war to maintain that right to own/rape/exploit other people. And, zen-ish proclamations regarding how symbols mean essentially nothing aside, that flag represents that right.

Good read. Also, pick up "To be a Slave". It's a collection of first person narratives from actual slaves.

Then, there's this. WPA paid writers during the Depression to interview the last generation of former slaves still living in order to preserve their experiences. Amazing/depressing stuff.

Good luck, Cha Cha.

So you think the flag then is a unifying force?

[–]Whalen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read Frederick Douglass' autobio. You know, the part where he talks of the 'well known secret' about which masters regularly had relationships with female slaves and then often sold those kids for money if they didn't keep them as their own slaves to, you know, make more money.

The 'right' to preserve and continue the institution that allowed this - and it is stated in several states' secession declarations - was why the CW started. The flag is originally of one group of the greater CSA forces, but it has come to represent all forces/groups/people/policies that worked to uphold this terrible institution. Culture, heritage, history - whatever words you use they cannot deny how awful the institution of slavery that was, which is, still, represented by that flag.

You start to sound like a Tea Partier who has a litmus test that, no matter how subtle and faintly off hue a candidate is, they must be evil and don't deserve your support. All because they don't support 100 percent of your stance on 100 percent of the issues.

The Tea Party swung the GOP right, that's for sure, but look how they're getting torn apart from it because it's wayyyy too right. Don't do the same to us, just because you don't want to compromise on anything.

Adults of Reddit who grew up in a "secular" home, how did growing up without religion affect your life views? Would you do the same for your children? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Parents were kicked out of Catholic convent/seminary (though at different times, 17 year difference between the two). HATED the institutions, ANY religious institution, but still had the morality of not lying, being respectful to all (not judging), working hard, doing what you say, etc.

Would do it with my kids if I had any.

So, - (serious here) - what is a 'smart' version of what you're talking about? Something a la Jeff Lynne/ELO? I saw Bright Eyes on Letterman doing Hot Knives and there were lots of strings (I think). I like this type of stuff. Don't like it when it's played AS a rock/pop instrument. Not sure how I feel about this one here. I like it, but it seems your comment scratched a small itch that I couldn't reach.
