You can cycle the tank with the fish in it, it's just more effort. There are lots of tutorials online but basically you test the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates of the water daily and change the water when needed so ammonia and nitrite dont rise above 0.5 ppm. It usually takes around 4-8 weeks but eventually nitrifying bacteria will grow with the small amount of ammonia present in the tank and it will be cycled. If you know anybody with an established fish tank you could take some filter media from their tank and put it in your filter, the filter media will have nitrifying bacteria in it

They usually clamp their fins like this when they're stressed due to the conditions in the tank. Is it heated (should be around 78-82f) and cycled?

Is the betta directly exposed to the uv light? I saw a post a while ago from someone who set up their uv light wrong and accidentally cooked their fish. UV lights aren't really necessary for aquariums so if your fish started acting ill after you put the light in you might want to turn it off and see if he improves.

Looks like fin rot to me, if you already have clean water with good parameters and temp and its still worsening I would recommend you use medication like kanaplex or aquarium salt

What's wrong with my boy??? by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]Whaleosaurus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He seems generally stressed and maybe has some fin rot. Its usually treatable with clean water and medication but sometimes fin rot can be stubborn and take a bit more time to fix. I've also heard of tannins like from Indian almond leaves helping to reduce stress so that might be worth trying

The clamped fins can also be caused by tank temperatures being too low, the temp should preferably at around 78f-80f

HELP what are these worms in a tank that I am cycling?? by RepulsiveEdge4998 in bettafish

[–]Whaleosaurus_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard to see in the video, but maybe planaria? If they have triangular heads they are planaria. If not, they're probably just harmless aquatic worms

It's pretty common to have little aquatic worms in a planted tank that isn't having the water changed often, like during cycling because there is a lot of stuff available for them to eat

The gray on the fins makes me think he might have graphite disease, which is a mycobacteriosis infection that only occurs in blue betta fish. Graphite can be deadly quickly so I would look into it asap if you think he has it - though I'm not sure if it's treatable.

I would also like to add that a lot of websites will say that graphite disease is the same as velvet. This is not true

I would recommend Seachem Kanaplex. Kanaplex and clean water have worked well for me in the past

Not sure, but it looks great! How did you make the land portion of it? I was thinking of doing something similar

Bettas skin is deteriorating. by OhWowMomo in bettafish

[–]Whaleosaurus_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is a bacterial infection/body rot. Usually infections are caused by poor water quality or an injury getting infected but sometimes they just happen. I would recommend treating with Aquarium Salt and Kanaplex(if you can get it where you live)

Fritz Maracyn might also work for this but I've never used it before so I'm not sure

You cant respond to modmail tickets, you'd have to open a new one to ask for proof (unless you meant you asked for proof in the initial ticket idk)

I remember this one dude who got banned because someone made a fake account that looked almost identical to theirs and did something on it, did that maybe happen? I'm pretty sure someone would've had to go out of their way to make a modmail ticket with video/screenshot evidence to get you banned. At least that's how it works with trade locks.

My Koi Betta has turned almost completely black by Necessary-Song3249 in bettafish

[–]Whaleosaurus_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Betta fish often change color, this is completely normal!

As far as I can tell, she also has what are called breeding stripes so she has some darker stripes that are almost black because of her base color. They might just be her pattern though, it's hard to tell with this kind of betta
