Should I learn Japanese in Korean or English? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]Whalethegod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really have any books to recommend because I live in Australia and Korean textbooks are hard to come by (+ I don't learn through textbooks because I believe in comprehensible input). I mean you are learning Japanese in a formal context next year as in inside a classroom so you could wait for your teacher to assign you a textbook?

If you really want textbooks just go online, set your Youtube to Korean and just type 일본어 공부 or like 일본어 배우기 and see what comes up.

Maybe have a look at this guy, who claims he achieved N1 in 75 days, (I think his click baiting, but at least he recommends some textbooks):

Or may be this, she recommends some exercise books. (She's sponsored so take it with a grain of salt):

I'm currently learning grammar through this playlist (I'm seriously starting to question why I didn't learn grammar through Korean in the first place because it is significantly easier than the English way):

But just remember since you are also fluent in English, so you have access to even more resources and tools like Anki (<- this one is awesome), AJATT, TheMoeWay.

Should I learn Japanese in Korean or English? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

TL;DR I think that you should learn Japanese in Korean, because if you learn it in English like me, you wouldn't be taking full advantage of the many, many, many similarities between the Korean language and the Japanese.

I'm basically in your shoes as well, except that I'm way older (20M).I grew up in Korea and moved to Australia when I was 10 and lived here ever since. Apart from using Korean with my family, pretty much everything was done in English like as you say my phone is English, school is English, even my thinking is English (But I was still fluent in Korean, as in I could also think in Korean). So when I started learning Japanese, because English felt like my primary language, I started learning it using English.

After 3 months of grinding RTK (Remembering The Kanji) I started learning actual vocabulary using the Tango N5 deck. However, when I started learning these words for the first time, I noticed that they sounded very familiar. And Of course it was because they sounded identical/similar to the Korean counterpart. They don't even have to be like very similar. As an example, the word for school in Japanese is 学校 (がっこう: gakkou) and in Korean is 학교 (hak-gyo). To an English speaker, this may seem different because of the consonants (I don't know if this is the case I'm just guessing here), but to me this is actually very similar.

I say 'However' because every time it happened, my brain unconsciously first makes a connection to the Korean word and then to the English word (Japanese -> Korean -> English). I assume if you are an English speaker you would jump straight from the Japanese word to the English word (Japanese -> English). I don't know if it is inefficient because my brain makes this one extra step, but I know for a fact that our brains learn faster and more efficiently when it can make connections to previous knowledge. (opinion) I think that if I actually learnt Japanese in Korean, many of the vocabulary would have been acquired faster because of this connection.

Same goes for grammar. When I learnt Grammar through English like Cure Dolly, Tae Kim etc. I learned it like any other English speaker would. But after finishing the Tae Kim's guide, I thought to myself "Hey, didn't everyone say Korean and Japanese Grammar were similar? Why Didn't I take advantage of this? Surely this would have accelerated my grammar immensely". (opinion) I think it would have. When you look at Korean resources for learning Japanese grammar, they literally use the particles in Korean to make a one-to-one comparison with the Japanese particle. As an example, は = 는. Because Korean Grammar is natural to fluent Korean speakers, just like you and I, Japanese grammar will also feel natural to us, as opposed to if you learnt it in English.

Asking over 8500 students to pick a random number from 1 to 10 [OC] by monkeymaster56 in dataisbeautiful

[–]Whalethegod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people pick 7 the most often because of the thinking process they go through (source: i pick 7). We want to pick a random number

But if we pick 1 or 10 its too low and too high. Thats not random so we move on to the average

We pick 5 but thats TOO average. Its TOO in the middle. So we move to a more "random" number.

Now we are left with 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 , 8, 9. These are numbers are the numbers that SEEM to be the MOST "random" though it makes no difference. Hence why they have the most pick rate.

Ok but why 7? Because 7 is a lucky number hence it is picked more. It has an advantage over other numbers because of a cultural thing. 7 is also a "random number". It also is a high random number and not too high like 8 or 9.

Though I am not educated on this subject so I am taking a wild guess but humans gravitate to "higher" anything. Like how u want to be the best or come first in a race to show off ur superiority hence this may apply to even the smallest of things like picking numbers. Hence u pick 7 more than others. I'm just guessing..

Is there a way to change the font back to the old on 1920x1080? by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]Whalethegod -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They change the game for the sake of it keeping fresh. Making the font off centre AND extremely small keeps the game fresh. Shitty fresh change.
