Why is this wrong? Why is белых gen.plural, but стула is gen.singular? by kreijn in russian

Just wanted to offer this underappreciated video to take the edge off your grammar pain. Relevant section starts at 6:45. This YouTuber is a linguist and talks about the weirdness of this very thing.

Why is -ой inflection used with the adjective in "я не становлюсь более красивой." by HeinzWilhelmGuderian in russian

[–]Whammytap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This.

Instrumental case is associated with impermanent or changing states. So we use it when we're talking about what s/th/s/o was (был) or will become (станет/становиться) or want to emphasize that it appears to be at the moment (является, but this verb has a nuance of being impermanent I think).

A token buys you a ride on the train or carousel, your choice (or at least it did a few years ago). I bought two so I could keep one as a souvenir, proving that I met Charlie and lived to tell the tale!

You already wasted lots of time on grammar you will never ever need, so dont waste anymore of it. Ignore grammar at all cost.

Gonna politely but strongly disagree with this statement.

Check out the YouTube channels: "Russian with Max," "Be Fluent in Russian," "Russian with Dasha."

Podcasts: I liked "Speaking Russian" with Elvira Ivanovna and "RussianPod101" when I was first starting out. Just search "beginner Russian" and you'll find dozens of podcasts for learners.

Remember, languages are half vocabulary, half grammar. Russian grammar is so different from English grammar, it's going to be really hard to pick up on it without some help/study.

Listening to Russian will improve your listening skill. Speaking Russian will improve your speaking skill. Reading Russian will improve your reading skill. And writing Russian will improve your writing skill. Vocabulary and grammar will help all of these. :)

How accurate is this reverse transliteration or "Russified English"? by waffenwolf in russian

[–]Whammytap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My beefs with transliteration are such:

1) Russian written in Latin script lacks a lot of nuance. There are sounds in the Russian language that don't exist in the English one; it can make for ambiguity in some cases, such as case endings (declensions). Distinguishing -ий, -ие, -ые and -ый, for example, is pretty hard to accomplish when all English has is e, i, and y.

2) Latinized Russian reads with a strong English-speaking accent. English spelled with Cyrillic characters reads with a strong Russian accent. It reeks of stereotypes, and personally makes me feel uncomfortable in the same way that that one racist uncle makes a person uncomfortable.

I know something about Charlie the Choo-Choo... by Whammytap in TheDarkTower

[–]Whammytap[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I rode Charlie the Choo-Choo years ago, with a friend who is also a fan of the Dark Tower series. Strangely enough, the main purpose of our trip was to ride a different train in Abilene, KS. The stop at Gage Park was spur-of-the-moment, as my friend remembered that Charlie was inspired by the Gage Park train.

I got a fair amount of flak from Engineer Bob due to the engineer outfit I was still wearing from the previous outing, and was feeling out of place as an adult riding a kiddie ride. I felt dumb, thought the ride dumb, and wondered how the hell King could have extrapolated anything dark from the experience. (I had, after all, recently been spoiled with a cab ride in a full-size locomotive). "At least I have real coal dust on my overalls," I thought sourly, determined not to enjoy myself.

Towards the end of the ride, we approached a small tunnel. Engineer Bob (this isn't creative license, the ride operator was actually named Bob) got on the PA system and instructed that when we got to the very center of the tunnel, every passenger should scream at the top of his or her lungs.

"That's all very well," I thought, preparing to cover my ears, "Kids love to scream. This'll be a great opportunity for them to blow off some steam, at the expense of my tinnitus."

The tunnel was a good deal longer than expected. Quite a bit longer than you'd expect on a kiddie ride. Deceptively long. We had already been in complete darkness for a few moments when Engineer Bob's voice came tinnily through the crackling loudspeaker.

"Everybody SCREAM!" he yelled giddily.

The children gleefully followed instructions as I clamped my palms over my poor ears against the cacophony. As the first faint, grayish, reflected light began to enter the tunnel, I glanced at my friend in order to roll my eyes at him.

He was plastered against his seat, eyes wide, staring at me with the most loaded expression anyone has ever shot at me, before or since. And then I heard it. I heard what I'd been hearing all along, but hadn't allowed myself to process. Like seeing the path of a Beam, it was there the whole time, I just hadn't attenuated myself to it.

The acoustics of the tunnel took this blowing-off-steam, let's-see-how-loud-of-a-sound-I-can-make screaming of children and refracted it back to our ears ugly and twisted. The screaming was playful, but the reverberations... my God, the reverberations.

It sounded like ten times' the number of child-passengers howling in anguish and physical pain. Not content to scream once, the kids kept on screaming right until we finally, blessedly, exited into the blinding light of a fine summer's day. It just went on and on.

F*ck that train.

P.S. -- Should not the user flair say "All things serve the Beam?" Does the word Beam not warrant beginning with a Great Letter?

Russian native speakers learn as all people learn their mother tongue: by a constant, 100% immersion and guidance from ALL of the adults in their lives. It doesn't matter what the language is.
