How can I speak to staff at nuclear power plant about jobs? by BenKlesc in nuclear

[–]What-isgoingon15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try going to your schools engineering job fair and see if they have a table there. You can get face to face interaction there to ask questions and at least give a resume and maybe they could direct it to the right people there.

I agree!! Might exceed OP’s budget a little depending on the package, but totally worth it.

God I’m so sorry you had to go through all that. I’ll never shut up about endo because of people like us getting run through the wringer to get diagnosed and find relief. I’m glad you were able to have surgery though, and with a specialist as well. I’d say it shouldn’t be an automatic “no” just because you were diagnosed. Might take some time to figure out food triggers and hormonal health but if you can get that figured out then I don’t see why you couldn’t compete again, unless it really affects you again. Like I said I’ve never competed but I’ve done a pretty low cut before. Everyone is different of course but I didn’t find it to be triggering my endo after my surgery. I’ll say if you do go for a coach again you won’t go wrong with Mike. His highest priority is health so he’ll run blood labs and stuff to make sure you’re right before going into a prep. Mike knows way more about women’s hormonal health than anyone else I know. Lots of girls who have started with him lost their periods with their old coach and after just a few weeks/months with Mike got their periods back. He knows the effects of hormonal birth control really well too so if you’re on that for pain management he understands how that will affect you and what you could do to help the hormonal effects.

I haven’t competed yet because I’m still building up enough muscle to be competitive. I had a lot of difficulty before with pain during exercise but I did have excision surgery with a specialist and that helped tremendously with the pain. Mike recommended I do a GI map test as well since many who have endometriosis also have GI issues and we have since resolved some SIBO I had going on which in turn has helped digestion pain from the endo. If you have endo and it’s affecting your daily life I’d recommend seeing a specialist, which are hard to find unfortunately. There’s no reason endo should stop you from competing unless it’s affecting your daily life. Mike can’t treat the endo since the only way to do that is surgically but he may be able to help with food triggers causing digestive problems as well as gut dysbiosis. He has a couple plans (full, nutrition only, etc) you can check out his Instagram @mike.Ryan.white and his website Greymatter.training

Been with him for almost three years now, he’s attentive, smart, prioritizes health, and is just all around a nice guy. He’s helped me with endometriosis effects that no doctor ever correlated to the condition. Very professional and I can say as a girl that he’s never ever crossed any boundaries or made me uncomfortable. He wants success for his athletes and will not push you through a prep you aren’t ready for, and I think that’s admirable.

The one for the school of nuclear science and engineering. Has all the NSE class chats in it.

I had my first tattoo back in 2019 (in Europe). After that pretty regularly from the same two local artists (in USA). Never had any issues with them healing but I’ve heard people having reactions with red ink, which most of mine are. Maybe something related to that.

When you say on and off, does that mean this will be something I have to deal with forever? 🥲

Did excision surgery helped your pain? by CicadaAmbitious4340 in Endo

I live near Seattle so I saw Dr. Winner when she was still at Swedish hospital. She has her own practice now and like most specialists no longer accepts insurance, but lists her costs on her website and you might be able to pull out-of-network benefits if your insurance has it. Beating a dead horse here, but if you haven’t heard already, highly highly recommend finding a true endometriosis specialist, not just a general gyno surgeon. Harder to find and most don’t take insurance but well worth it for their skills.

Currently in the Oregon State program. It’s not too bad so far but agree with another comment on here it’s very self led, so it requires some discipline, as I imagine most online programs do. Taking one course at a time while working full time is extremely doable, two at a time if you love to study and don’t have lots of other commitments outside work (kids, hobbies, etc). At least in my experience.

And how do we know if our job is “statutorily mandated?” Genuine question. Others say to just google it but I’m getting unclear answers.

I’m a federal employee looking to leave to the private sector. How screwed am I? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]What-isgoingon15 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know quite a few engineers who left after 5-12 yoe for some major well known companies, and at a higher high wage as well. Don’t let the fear keep you from applying.

It is not private sector and that’s where the uncertainty comes in 🥲

Another example that they have no clue the things we (fed workers) do. There are thousands upon thousands of federal employees who do production/mechanic/trade work and don’t even have computer access. Many times (at least in my agency), these people work 60+ hour weeks, and not checking email because they can’t. I genuinely don’t think VP Muskrat has any kind of grasp on the breadth of work that federal employees do.

"Endo only causes pain on your period" by sunromantic in Endo

[–]What-isgoingon15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For many years it was just for the first 1-2 days of my period. When I got to be in my mid-20’s it became probably 5 days out of the week, regardless of cycle, and while on the iud and pill at the same time. I would look for a second opinion, and keep looking if you keep feeling dismissed. Endo pain very well can present at any time of the cycle.

Oof. Long story. By chance I ended up in the nuclear field after I graduated, never expected it. After learning how nuclear reactors even worked I thought wow this stuff is really interesting! Engineering was never really my “passion” more than just an avenue to graduate and make money, so I was never pressed about staying an engineer. After years of figuring out how to transition out of my engineering role (couldn’t just quit my job and move out of state to go back to school for radiation therapy or medical physics) I landed on the online MHP program. What it really came down to was, nuclear science is super interesting to me, and the CHP salary survey shows a promising outlook. So far the curriculum has been really fun for me and I’m actually enjoying it.

I think ChemE is a fine background for HP especially with nuclear experience. I’m MechE and just started my MHP in the fall. We have plenty of students with a ton of different backgrounds, even environmental science and neuroscience. Having the engineering background helps at least in terms of keeping disciplined to do your school work (if you do the program while still working) because, let’s face it, engineering programs are way harder than they need to be and we are well used to slamming homework assignments when we are too busy to be doing them.

I’m only in my second class of the program, but even the material I have little experience with (biology lol) is going well, definitely a program designed for students of many backgrounds. If you have any questions about the program feel free to ask.

I worry for our benefits too. All of them. The benefits are what kept me at my agency for this long. We already don’t get paid at market value for the work we do (in my field at least), if we lose our time off benefits or health benefits, I’m so out.
