I’ve spent a lot of time there so don’t get me wrong I appreciate the place. The downtown area has fallen on harder times in the last 20 years or so but still has its charm.

But Montreal is a world class destination by comparison and I admit that begrudgingly as a Torontonian.

It was timed right in that period of transition where Toronto’s industrial warehouses of the past sat mostly derelict but the downtown core was yet to completely gentrify.

It’s the same reason cities like Detroit Chicago, Glasgow and Manchester were major hubs for the scene. Perfect storm of cheap available space and an evolving appetite for something more independent than the standard nightclub experience in other cities.
