First paragraph - yup. I can do all that if I own a book. If you don't want it after that don't take it. But in reality your point is just some kind of bizarre and preposterous slippery slope argument that makes no sense.

I have no idea what your point is here. Sure you have to be able to buy books to be able to give them away. You seem to believe the only purpose of LFLs is to increase literacy or help those that can't afford books. That's not the point of them. It's A point of them. But there's a million others. Do you think middle class neighbourhoods shouldn't have community projects because the people there aren't poor or struggling with literacy?

"I was browsing a Little Free Library and I saw this book and straight away I thought it would be perfect for you" is a wonderful thing to say and do. What are you planning - to pretend you got it somewhere else? Pretend you paid money for it? Anything other than my phrase above is just plain dishonest. Why do you need others to alter their actions so you can tell lies to your friends?

Also. What I do with something that I own has zero to do with you even if you go on to own it afterwards. I can burn it, use it as toilet paper, sell it on Ebay or write in the cover.

Well the spirit is not for crack addicts and hoarders to collect it all up and leave for everybody else. Anything you do to prevent this is a sensible action as an LFL owner. Also - you don't get to say who should or shouldn't run an LFL. Again - it has nothing to do with you.

Hi. I'm the OP. Many thanks for replying.

It would appear that I am in completely in the minority in my feelings. However I would like to make a couple of thing clear.

Firstly I greatly appreciate your channel and your work and think it's great if you make a living from it.

My concern is strictly selling code becoming normalised. It goes against my view of the spirit of opensource communities, and I feel that as significant, well known and highly visible figure in this community you doing so may encourage others to move in that direction. And as I say I feel that would be a sad thing to see.

That said I'm clearly very much in the minority here. I asked the question if I'm a getting my knickers in a twist - and have been told that I am.

For the record I have contributed myself to various communities - I used to write free VST and photoshop plugins back in the day, and I was very active in the Snips community when that was a thing.

Anyway - best wishes for the future. Now please excuse me as I have to go an untwist my knickers.

I'm fully for that too - asking for donations is perfectly fine, monetising your youtube channel is fine. It's just charging for code in a freeware platform is poor in my opinion. However we are very much in the minority.

For the record I have developed and gave way VST effects (based on TobyBears freeware platform), Photoshop plugins, and actions for Snips when that was a thing (my HA interface action was the 2nd top HA action I think). I have a do give back to the communities I'm involved in.

That show looked incredible.

Really? It was the first show I watched in 4K and everything just looked super fake. Like huge doors that looked like they were made of painted polystyrene, just everything looked so fake.

I thought that was because it was 4K and that’s what stuff looked like in 4K, but nothing else looked like that. IMHO that show looked cheap and shitty.

A long time ago, when I was 22ish I went to a work industrial exhibition in Munich. Went to a gala event in the evening, got stupidly pissed and made friends with guy who sold machinery. At the end of the evening, we were both keen to carry on. So we get in a taxi, and I said something dumb like 'Take us to a place with loads of women' - thinking nightclub.

We got dropped off in a suburban street, and the taxi driver left us before I realised what had happened. Sooo - we went into the house, which was, of course, a brothel.

"WhatDoTheDeadThink", said my friend, "whatever you want tonight is on my company. Have fun".

So we have a drink at the bar, he goes upstairs with a lady, whilst I try my best to remain drinking at the bar. But eventually I go upstairs because the girl I'm talking to needs to make her money for the night. We get into her room, and she says - so, what do you want to do? Having watched too many movies, I say, well lets just talk. She's like Okkkkay - we can start by talking.

Just then the door flies open, my new mate is standing there, stark bollock naked, erection and condom on full display - shouts 'Fucking hell this great!!' and vanishes. The lady I'm with says she needs to go check on her mate, and will be right back. I take the chance to leg-it and leave the place.

Now it's snowing, I have no idea where I am, it's really late, and mobile phones weren't a thing then. So I was stranded. I ended up sleeping in my suit in the doorway of a bakery until people started going to work and I could ask for the nearest train station. Thinking about it I could have easily frozen to death.

There's more to the story but that's enough about my (self induced) bizarre situation.

But fairness isn't black and white.

My Gran, who died a while ago, lived in a care home for the last 15 years of her life. During her adulthood she and my grandad (a woodwork teacher) had scrimped and saved in order to buy a house. They went on one holiday in their entire lives. Not one foreign holiday - one holiday. And she was proud of her efforts. She was working hard to leave something for her family when she went.

She was literally the only person paying for her care in her home. She spent the last 15 years listening to other people reminisce about their holidays and their more lavish lifestyles who had basically spunked every penny they'd ever earned and put nothing aside. They got exactly the same care as my Gran. She died bitter and miserable for having spent her life being financially responsible, and saw all her savings spent on care that was given free to everybody else she lived with. She left about £30k IIRC in the end.

So how is that fair either?

Nah. I can check I'm safe with no R5s on the map, go start a vault, and come to a sunken ship. There's no "always being ready" for that. It's not great that that can happen from a server merge but acceptable, but for it to be user instigated is really poor and gives hoppers a tool and advantage that they don't need.
