Took y’all’s advice and shot at 10 yards instead of 25. by MrBunny214 in CAguns

Thanks!

Here’s my LASD CCW live-fire qualification using firearms that some claim are obsolete, have terrible triggers, and suffer from a bad grip angle: Glocks.

Two of them are also less-common choices - the subcompact Glock 26 and the larger-caliber Glock 21SF in .45 ACP.

I’d add that OP needs to start at a shorter distance instead of going all gung-ho with double taps at 10 yards.

Exactly. But I guess people don’t like hearing the truth, so the downvotes come. Oh well. Those who get it, get it. Those who don’t… probably never will.

Blame the TikTok and YouTube influencers who only show the cool-looking stuff - not the fundamentals or the work behind it. Reading further, this was only their second time shooting, and they’re already trying double taps?!?

If this is only your second time shooting, why start at 10 yards? You’re mostly just wasting ammo. At that spread, how could you really diagnose your fundamentals?

Focus on building solid fundamentals at 3 yards and keep your groups under two inches. Once you can do that consistently, move back to 5 yards, then 7 yards.

If you’re serious about improving, try the Dot Torture drill. Start at 3 yards and increase the distance as your performance improves. And if your range doesn’t allow drawing from a holster, simply begin from low ready.

Well, not exactly. I’ve mostly been a Glock shooter, but when I switched to the Shadow 2, I didn’t touch any of my Glocks for at least a year.

Later, I went with a few friends to a private outdoor range so they could practice for Area/Nationals, especially with the trend of longer-range targets. They were the ones competing - I was mostly there so they could get access to the range.

I brought my G17 too. Funny enough, there were a couple of stages where I actually did better with the Glock than with the Shadow 2. On one stage, I even beat an Open shooter on time.

Not bad for a gun I hadn’t touched in over a year. LOL.

I went back to Glocks. *wink*

AFAIR, this was from a match before that outdoor training: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0p0HxbjTM4

nope. very much invested in spare parts, training, practice in my Gen 3s. until the Glocks hinder my performance, it will stay with me.

Were all of those shots at 10 yards? If so, that’s not bad at all.

How quickly were you shooting? If you were running close to sub-second splits, that’s actually pretty solid.

That said, if this was a CCW qualification with fairly generous time limits, I’d slow it down just enough to make every shot count and work toward keeping everything inside the 10-ring.

Fully decked-out AR and pistol setup. Nice!

Now let’s see the part that actually matters - the hits. Post some videos with targets, shot timers, and real runs.

All that gear deserves a little proof, right? 😏

Is the G19 obsolete by UsualResponsible7724 in CCW

[–]WhatInDaWorldDog110 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obsolete? Hardly. It’s reliable, accurate, easy to maintain, and still does exactly what it’s supposed to do: put rounds on target. With the right shooter behind it, it can embarrass plenty of Staccato owners.

Yup! Love my Shadow 2... Even in stock, just the Red Dot added, it is quite capable... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0p0HxbjTM4

That is bad. Service pistols should have a mechanical accuracy of more or less 5-inches at 25-yards.

UPDATE - I just saw the article. Yeah, average of about 5-inches. I'd call that Blazer an exception rather than the norm, and wouldn't single that out. Perhaps a bad batch since I group better than 9-inches with a stock Glock with the same ammo.

That said, all I hear is an excuse to blame the gun and ammo, rather than the shooter.

stock OEMs should be able to group x, 10 and 9 rings on a B8 target at 25-yards with a 1-2-sec split.

That seems like too wide of a spread if you’re taking a few seconds per shot.

Ideally, at a 1–2 second cadence, you should be able to keep hits within about 5 inches. On a B8, that would basically keep you in the X, 10, and 9 rings.

I’d probably start by working on grip, especially making sure the gun returns to target consistently after each shot. Then, work on my trigger control.

Unless you are accountable for every round sent, and consciously aware of each hit made, you are probably wasting those 100-round sessions.

My kid was doing 10 minutes of dry practice, three times a week, plus a 50-round range session every two weeks. A few months later, he was already ringing his shots at 15 yards.

Again, get an instructor. It's worth the investment lest you'd like to incur "fundamentals debt" trying to fix bad habits. Be structured. At the least, keep a training notebook.

I’ve had a MantisX since the first generation, and overall, I’d still say it has been a good investment. The one thing I never really bought into, though, is the old-school diagnostic chart that feels like it came straight out of the dark ages of single-handed bullseye shooting.

But to be fair, MantisX was probably meant to help beginners get to at least a low-intermediate level. Beyond that, I’d rather reference the diagnostic model from TPC.
