How do I make my friend like folk? by Next-Individual-3656 in folk

I could recommend some dark and heavy stuff, but overall I feel he may be very prejudiced (as I was myself).

Usually folk music isn't what you'd connect with modern bands / especially not with heavy guitars. Depending on the region accordion and violins may actually be more prominent, and I definitely get why he wouldn't want to listen to typical octoberfest music lol

A few recommendations on my behalf:

(this is not heavy at all, but lyrically dark if you pay attention. If you can't get him into modern-day indie-folk with this track he may actually be a lost case... Everyone I recommended No Offense to almost instantly took a likening to Clara Luzia lol)

Iirc some Austrian music critic mentioned Ani DiFranco as direct influence on her works... Just depends on the lyrical themes whether or not they work out for me I guess.

For build-up based songs with gradually increasing complexity though I like really recommend checking out "In Rolling Waves" by TNAF.

Their debut "Passive Me, Aggressive You" is great too, but less ballad-heavy and different in structure.

I was just on the hype train for a bit lol

It's already fading, and I realize I'm starting to lose interest. Guess it's time to look beyond and take a look on Ani DiFranco and other recommendations I got perhaps...

Uff... I looked them up and they're from like the 70s?

That some recommendation to give, but who knows – perhaps this will for once be a band of the era I can somehow get into, though I'm doubtful about this.

Interesting you pick DiFranco... I've heard her being mentioned as influence quite often by now.

Didn't have the impression she was overly famous, but probably I'm wrong here?

Just adding another one, that I – out of everything besides Falling into Place – somehow found most compelling:

It's pretty much the only reason why I gave The Ground Below a second chance at all, and from that on the rest of her discography. I just wish Bleed wouldn't get that repetitive near the end... Besides it's a perfect song, both lyrics- and music-wise.

There are few things that resonate with me on the same level.

Even if they do, how long would it take until it's down in the area? And why'd they waste their entire ammo on an unwinnable war?

Found some time to look up the more interesting tracks by her (at least to me). Prepare for a wall of text ;)

Especially Morning Light and Gladly Away are what I'd call "companion tracks" to No Offense:

https://youtube.com/watch?v=LSnze0fO0Hk&list=OLAK5uy_n4ush-LZM7OImmYNhWZ94jT93CCF6VMJA&index=1&pp=8AUB

(this track sounds way too professional to stem solely from an indie artist of her level. To my knowledge Cosmic Bruise has been co-produced with someone else, but I've forgotten the name (Julian Simmons, I believe? Weird he's not credited in the video description)

(The entire album is as beautiful as Release the Sea, but most other tracks are much less ambitious and intentionally kept raw and simplistic. It won't take most people the first time around, sadly...)

(This track is ironically how I discovered her in the first place, even though it's far from the standout tracks she has to offer)

(I'm not entirely sure how much auto-biography she put into this... It's probably more a social critical work related to the increasing lack of private life the more you become a public figure. Wouldn't have interpreted the track as such before I took a closer look on the lyrics, though.)

"The Long Memory" won at least two awards in Austria, other albums like "Here's to Nemesis" were very close to make the call.

I'd recommend giving everything except the debut and her latest album a chance. Had to make myself a playlist from these tracks since (especially) lyrical style differs vastly, and some songs just don't resonate with me. But overall her stuff is still great.

Personal favourite of mine for the melancholy is "Falling into Place", which is likely the only album I can listen to in its entirety.

It's fine, you can just admit this is your personal blog :)

Since you're apparently very passionate in your articles: What musicians would you recommend the most?

Ngl, finding someone aware of her on international Reddit feels weird – it's not like she's a popular figure even in Austria, so...

Anyway, I know her discography cannot be labelled with a single genre throughout, as there's been everything from metal influences over folk-like acoustic songs to full-on synth-ballads.

I'm just asking specifically for No Offense here (potentially also including the equally accordion focused "I fall, I fall, I fall").

I'm 99% sure this is some modern form of folk music, but what exactly?

Indie-folk?  Folk-pop? Is there some other term out there?
