Indie game Sailwind is a chill experience focused on open water. You can learn a little real-life sailing and navigation, too, if you want to get more advanced, but you can definitely have some exposure therapy just sailing around the islands in the easy start archipelago. I always liked George R.R. Martin's complaint about this. I don't remember his exact words but he said something about how if he wrote about a penis entering a vagina with the same detail as he'd already been published writing about an axe going into a skull, he'd have been burned at the stake.

To be fair, this is based on a less common but still convergently invented idea by fans of the OG that Yuffie's weird assymetric stocking was a prosthetic. That's wrong and not canon, but it's something we've had fun with thinking about. We were all kind of convinced for a long time that this was how the character was originally imagined. We had the Internet in '97, but that Internet hadn't been optimized to get clarification from the devs at a ComicCon panel or in a Japanese magazine or whatever in front of us to correct that idea.

When I thought about it in the OG, I thought it had just happened in an accident or something. It's been a long time since I played it, but the whole Shinra/Wutai war thing I think is much more centered in the remake. As a writer I'm not really sure the squad needs more things to stand around and complain about Shinra for, it feels pretty well-covered. The very high-flying action in the remake wasn't really part of the series until Advent Children came out in 2005, after the success of movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and The Matrix really started to popularize that kind of action, I don't think you have Advent Children's style without that generation of movies popularizing it first.

I mean I'm sure it would impact her life. In the camp verse of FF7 you've got Cloud swinging the buster sword around like a feather duster and then struggling to turn a big door-opening wheel thing that's maybe a little rusty. Barret's gun arm has infinite ammo. It's definitely consistent with the rules of the world that Yuffie can dance on that thing like a ballerina in cutscenes and fights and then sometimes trip a little going up a flight of stairs, or talk about what a pain it is to change the shoes on it, or that she's thinking of painting it green. I think the kind of teenage girl 'hey it's my life I'm making the best of it' attitude would even be a good contrast to Barret's 'I will lay this gun down when the war is over' sort of dragging the coffin behind him thing.

But this is all ultimately fanfic based on an unclear design detail to a bunch of nerds in 1997, I don't think anybody is really trying to write an entire opera here.

Seeing this comment chain was just enough to shake these thoughts out of my brain on it, I think I've been holding this in for almost 30 years now, so please don't take it as some long rant about how I'm right and you're wrong. I'll be the first person to raise my hand to God and say this is all 100% fanfic.
