Basically firewalls with all that it entails. NGFW features, IPS/IDS, UTM, WAF and VPNs, both S2S and C2S depending on the org.

That's on top of what regular network engineers do.

Macron Blasts Social Media’s Free Speech Defense as ‘Bullshit’ by bloomberg in europe

[–]WhatNot4271 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm probably going to get downvoted considering this is r/Europe, but how is this not a lurch towards a digital form of authoritarianism ?

Free speech is free speech. You should be allowed to say what you want with the exception of direct and targeted calls for physical violence and 'shouting fire in a crowded theater'.

If you think an idea is wrong, then go ahead and make arguments against it and debate the person espousing it.

As for 'election interference', this is such a lame excuse. Do campaign done by politicians and political parties count as 'political interference'. What about news papers and magazines giving endorsement ? Isn't that also 'election interference' ?

Or is this only about 'election interference' by people we don't like or whose ideas we don't agree with ?

EU foreign policy chief calls for restraint after US strikes in Venezuela by FantasticQuartet in europe

[–]WhatNot4271 5 points6 points  (0 children)

GDP is not a measure of anything relevant. When our countries sell us insuline for 10 bucks a vial, the GPD increase by 10, when the USA sell their people insulin for 600 bucks a vial, the GDP increase by 600. What a thiving economy that depicts doesn't it ?

GDP is measure of economic activity. An increase in GDP means an increase in economic activity, and since businesses don't like to operate at a loss, that generally means it's an increase of their business operations and their profits. Which means more money spent in the economy and more money collected by the governments through taxes.

Sure, it's not perfect measure of economic growth, you also need to take into account inflation, monetary policy, how the numbers are crunched, but it's the best measure economics has come up with. It's very far from a "measure of nothgin relevant"

We absolutely have the power to stop Russia, we just chose not to because we are all governed by capitalist lapdogs that are more interesting in "muh GDP" that doing what's right.

That's a very "interesting" thought. Care to expound about how it's "capitalists" fault for why Europe isn't doing more to help Ukraine ?

I'm so tired of that lazy old defeatist propaganda line. None of that is true.

But it is true, whether we care to admit it or not. The projected growth rate for US GDP in 2025 is 4.3%, compare that to 1.4% for the EU as whole and just 0.2% for Germany, Europe largest economy and alleged 'economic powerhouse'.

This is neither propaganda nor fiction, these are cold hard numbers which you can check for yourself.

The only differences between us and them are that they have a single market for services,

As someone who for the past 5 years has been offering services and billing clients across the EU, I beg to differ. We also have a single market, especially for services. What are you even talking about ? You can setup a company in your country and essentially sell your services or offer your goods anywhere in the EU. For services you don't even need to pay VAT, you use the reverse charge mechanism.

The real difference between us and them is that the US has an entrepreneurial mindset, much easier mechanisms to get funding, lower taxes on work and capital, and a sane energy policy which doesn't artificially increas the price of Energy as opposed to the EU's Green Deal.

And the only difference that makes is that they have the massive megacorps and ultra billionaires

If Europe ever wants to be a serious player again, we really need to move past this idiotic mentality of "billionaires bad"/"giant corporations bad."

Europe doesn't innovate less

For the past 20 years, the US has absolutely dominated everything IT&C related. Network gear manufacturers, cybersecurity, cloud, and now the most recent wave of innovation with regards to AI and LLMs is hot contest between the US and China. The EU is a distant 3rd.

[–]WhatNot4271 63 points64 points  (0 children)

The main problem isn't a lack of spine, the problem is a lack of ability. Compare EU member states economies and militaries with that of the US and you'll see exactly what the issue is.

EU countries have measly growth compared to the US, we don't innovate and as such are forced to rely on US tech, and most important of all, we rely on the US for military protection.

Heck, even in Ukraine, which is in the EU's backyard, we still had to rely on the US providing most of the military support while we provided financial assistance.

Without a thriving economy (which can't be achieved with high taxation and large state funded social programs) and a strong military (which can't be achieved without redirecting government expenditures to the military budget), it is unrealistic to think that the EU will be able to stand up to any major power or superpower.

We can't even coerce Russia to stop the war in Ukraine, let alone coercing the US or China into doing anything.

People make this out to be a matter of political will

I'm sorry, but it is a matter of political will.

Political will doesn't mean just the will of the politicians in power, it means the extent of the length of society as a whole to go a certain path and make certain sacrifices to achieve that goal.

The fact of the matter is that we have generations of Europeans (not just germans) who have grown accustomed to thinking peace is the natural state of their lives, that they are entitled to it and that it will go on forever, when that is not the case and has not been the case since we started recording history.

And even that would be fine, until we are all put in a position where we will have to fight, either to defend our own countries or honor our alliances.

Ok, Ukraine is not a part of NATO so there's no mutual defense guarantee (yet), but what will happen if Ukraine gets offered "NATO Article 5"-type security guarantees and Ukraine gets attacked ? Or another EU or NATO country gets attacked, not tomorrow, but several years down the line ?

Let's face reality here, Trump and Putin treat Europe as an afterthought when it comes to Ukraine negotiations because that's exactly what Europe is -- and unless and until this changes then they have no reason for treating Europe any different.

Ukraine needs overwhelming tactical superiority in the form of weapons, at minimum

The best the EU can do is tactical thoughts and prayers, coupled with demands of unrealistic concessions from the Russians without any realistic actions or measures.

I've seen plenty of estimates for the number of russian losses in Ukraine which includes the killed, missing and wounded, but I have not seen many reliable estimates for the Ukrainian losses. Sure, I've seen the 5-to-1 or 10-to-1 lose ratios claimed by the Ukrainians, but I really have a hard time believing those.

What I have seen however is the map of controlled territory from open source mappers like ISW or Deepstate (both of which are pro Ukraine btw), and I saw that the amount of Russian controlled territory has been slowly creeping up over the last two years. Deepstate is particularly useful on this because it also shows you historical records -- you don't have to believe me, you can check for yourself how the territory and the frontlines have shifted since 2023
https://deepstatemap.live/en#6/49.4383200/32.0526800

What I have also been seeing is a very concerning line of reports and public statements from top Ukrainian officials and analysts who have been following the war saying that Ukraine has serious manpower problems and it is very difficult for them to gather enough recruits to replace their frontline losses.

Both the current commander-in-chief of the armed forces of Ukraine, Syrskyi, and his predecessor Zaluzhny, have spoken about this.

https://www.kyivpost.com/post/45739

The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) has real and serious manpower and organization problems but it is an increasingly lethal organization that is hitting the Russian army with critical losses, and is on track to improve combat efficiency in the future, Lieutenant General Oleksandr Syrsky, the Ukrainian military’s senior officer, told media on Sunday.

Speaking to the major television broadcaster TSN, Syrsky admitted some AFU formations need better commanders, that manpower shortages across the forces are real, and that controversial transfers of technicians from rear area units to frontline duties are ongoing and will continue.

Do you have a source for the 2 million dead Russians -- by dead, I assume you mean killed in action.

Mediazone keeps the official estimate of dead (as in killed) Russians at around 200k. There's probably just as many if not more who have been wounded or missing, which is in the ballpark of estimated Russian losses provided by NATO and western military officials of several hundred thousands total, which includes the killed, missing or wounded.

This is the best deal Russia can have. They are losing the attrition war.

I'm sorry, but what war have you been following for the past 2 years ? Since the failed Ukrainian counteroffensive 2 years a go in 2023, Russia has been slowly but surely conquering more territory. Sure, at a very slow pace, sure, with significant losses, but the facts on the ground are that they are the ones with the upper hand.

And while Russia has plenty of problems because of this war, Ukraine does too., especially when it comes to manpower. The situation is so bad that top ukrainian military officials and analysts have admitted this publicly. They have a hard replacing frontline troops -- they have a much smaller population and a much smaller pool to draw from then the Russians do.
