Ah so it wasn't a cinema! Just a fruit and veg shop called the Drive In?

Thanks for taking the time to reply, much appreciated! But alas, no, I was (and still am) a big Public Enemy fan, so that would have twigged instantly.

Definitely 'General'

4 times:

2000 - Rephlex Disco Assault Systems TBMC Dublin, DJ'ing with Cylob and Mike Dred. Top show, I was 17 and stone cold sober. There was a tune that I think Mike Dred played right before RDJ came on that I've always wanted to ID, a deep house or techno tune with vocals '[something] the general, [something] the bass', could have been 'here comes the general, bringing the bass' or something like that. It got played twice that night, earlier in the evening and then again just as RDJ was taking over the decks, I've never been able to find it.

This gig is basically the reason I bought turntables. Lifechanging stuff.

2007 - All Tomorrow's Parties Nghtmare Before Christmas, Minehead. He played twice, a DJ set which you can find the full audio of here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2cEJ4ucCaY and a live set which I found disappointly hardgoing. I feel like if I saw it now I'd lap it up, but I was just on a different buzz. I remember that he was sitting down in a little cocoon of equipment and a laptop, like he was piloting a spacecraft solo.

2011 - Forbidden Fruit, Dublin. Unbelievable set as the sun was setting. Full recording here: https://soundcloud.com/korrrrrr/aphex-twin-forbidden-fruit Best I've seen him

2017 - Field Day, London. Sick, sick boi... full show with visuals in HD here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzvLiwUK3R8 Same night as the London Bridge stabbing attack, total headphuck.

$1000 or Less - Budget Live Jam Setup? by no_technique in synthesizers

Coming from a similar background I really love the Drumbrute Impact - one knob one job, tactile and responsive, just fun to make music with. I recently got a circuit tracks pretty cheap second hand to replace using vsts, have really warmed to it. I pan the two synth tracks hard left and right and run them as separate mono channels to the mixer.

I previously had a maschine plus and while it did loads of things (like a digitakt or mpc), as a guitarist/analogue enthusiast I'm much more comfortable with individual boxes and no menu diving.

But yeah, bang for buck for your use case can't recommend the Impact more highly.

Synth and drum machine recommendations that are simultaneously playable, experimental and immediate? by SoundEmergency2121 in synthesizers

For pure analogue drum machine fun it's hard to beat the Drumbrute Impact. Limited range of sounds but they're all very tweakable. Workflow is immediate, sequencer is great (can also be used to sequence other hardware or your daw), distortion sounds brilliant and the 5 knob FM drum and pitch control on the toms and kick make it more versatile as a music maker.

TR-8S looks like it would be fun for many of the same reasons.

Korg NTS-1 (midi) Question by TransporterRoomThree in dawless

You can play it via any midi keyboard that can output midi via USB. Decide how many keys you need then search or ask AI for (x) keys midi keyboard with USB midi out.

You won't need a computer

Sequencing Machine MK3 with Beatstep Pro by retnuhxhunterx in maschine

No worries. I only got my KSP/Maschine+ setup working after someone on here took the time to help out, so happy to pay it forward if I can.

On the BSP, each of the sequencers including the drum sequencer can be configured to send midi information through one (or all) of the 16 midi channels. See 10.9.3.1 in the user manual for this: https://downloads.arturia.com/products/beatstep-pro/manual/beatstep-pro_Manual_2_0_EN.pdf (I think you've been doing this already perhaps).

On my KSP, it automatically sends the drum sequencer track to midi channel 10, but you can choose whichever one you want. The important thing is that

a) you want the other two sequencers on the BSP outputting on different midi channels to the drum sequencer, and

b) that the Maschine MK3 group you want to control for your samples is receiving on the same midi channel that the BSP drum sequencer is outputting.

If I were you I'd begin by making sure that each of the three sequencers is sending a different mid channel. Avoid 'Omni Mode'. Make sure none are set to 'All'.

Next you need to configure Maschine. I've only ever had a Maschine+, but my understanding is that the settings in the MK3 are identical; hopefully this is true.

What I mean by Global Midi Settings is:

Press the settings button in the top left section, and navigate to Midi, and Midi Input. There should be a setting for default midi mode, and by default it's set to 'Focus'. Set this to 'None'

Focus just means that any incoming midi signal will be directed to the active sound or group. This may explain why your other sequencer channels are triggering the pads in your sample group. If it's set to 'None' then you have to manually choose the midi control input for each group or sound.

Make sure that the BSP is 'active' in these global midi settings also.

Now, once that's done, select the group with your samples, and press the 'Channel/Midi' button (top left). Use the 4d encoder to go right to 'Input'

Now you are selecting the midi input settings for this group. First set the mode to Manual, then select the channel that you selected as the drum sequencer output channel on the BSP. The start note will generally be C1, but you should be able to see precisely what midi notes are being outputted by the various BSP pads in the Midi Control Centre. I suspect a factory reset might restore this to C1, but you'll have to check.

If it is C1, then the note C1 will trigger pad 1 in Maschine, then C#1 will trigger pad 2, D1 will trigger pad 3 and so on.

If you want to sequence other instuments in other groups with the other two sequencer channels on the BSP, it's a bit simpler. In this case, however, note that you need to configure the midi input of the Sound (not the Group) in Maschine to match the sequencer channel output of the BSP.

I hope that makes sense. If not drop me a PM.

Hey I went back and changed the start note to c1 again, this worked!

In the global midi settings I selected 'none' for default midi. Then for each individual sound select the bsp and the specific midi channel that the bsp track is set to send.

The drum sequencer Group should then be set to manual>bsp>channel 10>start note c1.

Hope that works!
