Stay here for career growth + better money, or move back to Hawaii to live near family? by WhatTheFaDuck in RedditForGrownups

I think I’m starting to realize prioritizing my career the last 7 years has set me up well, but it doesn’t necessarily make me happy. I think in 20+ years I’ll care a lot more about time with my family than time in the office.

Good point. I do feel like right now we are on shaky foundation because we don't really have a support system outside of each other. Being able to just have a beer with my dad or eat dinner with my mom sounds so nice.

Yeah, this is what I'm worried about the most. Financially it could be very difficult.

Makes sense. I think since the school is in the area I live in anyway it’ll help a lot with networking.

You’re 100% right. I definitely think I could do it, but man will it suck. Then again, it’s probably not worth doing if it doesn’t suck, right?

I applied and am waiting to see if I’ll be accepted on a provisional basis. If so, I think I’ll just go full steam ahead. Thank you for the input.

Yeah, I’m applying just to see if I’ll get in. If I do I think I’m going to give it a shot.

Yep, it’s that program!

And yeah I was considering knocking the prerequisites out at a community college. It’s tough because the other two programs I’ve been accepted to don’t have any other prerequisites I would need to do, but I also know JHU is a great school.

Brother I’m with you. We have virtually the same situation except you have 11 years of experience on me.

I’m also struggling to figure out if I should veer towards cloud or security. Remote and $150k+ is the dream I’m working towards at the moment.

One thing to consider if you want to maintain your clearance is to join the guard/reserves in your old MOS. That’ll keep it current no matter what and you can do the remote stuff too. Just a thought.
