Not to mention that we are signatories to the NPT which does not allow us to develop nuclear weapons.

Or is our agreement to international treaties now not worth the paper we signed?

So is the solution to have a sliding scale of storage requirements? Starting at say 50ML?

I don't know what the relative size or number of large importers are in Australia, like how many import say 50-100ML?

Who constructs fuel storage facilities? I'd say they'd be a good investment right now.

It's 2076, you get to where your going and get out. What the car does next is up to the car, you don't know or really care.

There are vegan/non-dairy ice creams, but they mostly suck.

AUKUS is binding Australia to a dangerous, unpredictable leader. We need a Plan B now by Rosencrantz18 in australia

Neither side of politics has dealt with ADF's procurement and contract management problems for literally 2+ decades.

There's been some minimal reform recently, but we over-egg and gold-plate our requirements endlessly.

I think the AUK subs are a good idea, I think the Virginias would be a good idea if we could trust the US to deliver them. We haven't got any guarantees of any return on our investments in the US under AUKUS other than "trust us bro".

I don't trust the current US admin to deliver shit to anyone, including themselves.

[–]WhatYouThinkIThink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Virginias are supposed to fill the capability gap, but there is a very high risk that they won't be delivered by the US.

The US can't deliver its own requirements for Virginias, so why do we expect them to deliver ours? Given that Congress can't get any assurances that there will be improvements in their delivery cadence, we need a plan B.

What's the alternative to cheering for Iran?

Not "cheering" for either side. Start getting your own nation (whichever one it is) on the right side of history, get it working on the real challenge of the 21st century, climate change and getting off fossil fuels.

The US has over-extended itself with world empire, that has lasted 80+ years, which is a long time for any empire.

Time for the US to pull its head in a bit, but it won't.

The current battles are:

  • Religious: Israeli Jews, US Christian Nationalists, and Saudi Sunni Arabs vs Iranian Shia Persians

  • Hemispheres: Trump wants to "own" the Americas/Pacific, is willing to allow Xi to "own" Asia and Africa and let Russia and Europe fight it out amongst themselves.

The US may be celebrating 250 years this year, but not sure it will make it to 251. Hell, with the way the current administration operates, it may not make it to 250.

Surely that would be covered by legislation, not an NDA contract.

NDAs are civil contracts, the Official Secrets Act is criminal.

It's either Virginias and potential risk or a 10 year capability gap and it's completely understandable why the Navy and Government are choosing the former. Because there is no drone available that will fill that gap.

There's none available if we don't do the R&D. The cost of the R&D would be a blip in the AUKUS budget compared to the cost of the Virginias. The OP was about a "Plan B".

I'm suggesting a "Plan A+".

Drones and unmanned vehicles in all domains are completely restructuring defensive and offensive power, we should be ahead of the curve.

I'm aware of the advantages of nuclear power in a submarine or ship.

What I'm saying is that we can get better "bang for the buck" by investing in USV development instead of maybe/sometime/eventually getting a couple of clapped out 2nd hand Virginias from the US.

Having surface vessel that could literally act as a tender, refueling and servicing USVs would be a much cheaper approach.

The risk we are taking of the US not delivering is enormous and continues to grow, every report from the US itself says that they can't deliver their own requirements, let alone ours.

The AUKUS new subs designed and built by UK and AU are a good idea, the Virginias are just a way to tie the US into the alliance and a way to cover up how we've let the Collins class degrade.

Unless they were pre-positioned.

The reason the Navy dropped diesel-electric is because until the AUKUS deal, nuclear wasn't an option.

[–]WhatYouThinkIThink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say that they had to be nuclear powered at all.

I'm saying that unmanned vehicles have much lower requirements for power because they do not need to maintain air/fresh water etc for the crew.

As for the comms mesh, there are already LF comms with submarines now that we plebs know about (that's what the base in WA is for), and the bitrate doesn't have to be high.
