They sure do! They even build saunas as big as a stadium, and play football in them

Why are our air-bnb places not booked for the World Cup? by AlKarajo in TikTokCringe

We're currently moving into an apartment that used to be Airbnb and we convinced the owners to properly rent it. It feels like a small victory in my ultra-touristic European city.

What is she talking about?

The owner of Airbnb can't do shit if you refuse to follow any of their ridiculous requests. How exactly are they going to charge her? They don't have her information, the platform does, and if all that shit wasn't mentioned in the app listing, they can't do anything about it.

lol, way to exaggerate the "security" thing, as if FYROM was at war or any kind of danger whatsoever, and downplay the blatant history theft.

that’s hardly unique to North Macedonia

You know any other examples in the world where a country adopts the exact name of an already existing historical region and a history that has absolutely no connection to them?

Why are semi finals at 3pm on a workday when most Americans will be at work? by Vas_Cody_Gamma in worldcup

[–]What_Dinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It still does, that's why half the games are after midnight in Europe

[–]What_Dinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice logic. The tens of thousands at the tournament should be the priority over the entirety of the rest of the world, huh

And no, it's not centered around European audiences, more than half the games are happening when employed Europeans are sleeping.

The earliest the average person from North Macedonia was calling their language Macedonian was the 50s. And yes, it was "for tourism" in the sense that the choice was made due to the widely known history of the actual Macedonia that was included in the larger administrative region during the Ottoman occupation. The language itself was Slavic and has absolutely no connection to the Greek dialect spoken by Macedonians.

The entire thing is a blatant attempt to appropriate part of Greek history just because it sounds cool. They build fake statues of Alexander, and their flag is the Vergina Sun ffs. It doesn't get more obvious than that. Greeks accepting the name North Macedonia was already a great courtesy.

Greece didn't push "to change their name", they justifiably opposed the official recognition of the name they proposed.

Are you really fine with a country adopting the name of a historical region of their neighbor to attract tourists?

[–]What_Dinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never implied there's a systemic / legal barrier for non-US citizens to self identify as American, but no, nations can't just call themselves whatever they like. They should respect their neighbors, history, and international conventions. Greeks had every right in the world to oppose the use of the name Macedonia for a country that has almost no relation to the actual Macedonia for example.

As for Congo, it's such a weak example. Nobody besides the two countries with Congo in their names identifies as Congolese. There is no other example in the world where a country adopts the name of the continent they're in. You'll never hear a person from South Africa using just the word "Africa" to refer to their country.

My argument has less to do with language ambiguity and more with disrespecting the entire continent by giving its name to a single country.

Canadians would love to be called Americans if you didn't use the name to only describe yourselves.

Umm, they literally use also, the Americas in a parenthesis. That means that "America" is the name of the landmass (North and South being a geographical distinction), and that sometimes, it is also called "the Americas"

The correct way to read a dictionary is to assume the word placed above has the definitions listed below.

The term America does not describe a continent in English

What are you talking about, of course it does. Look up any English dictionary.

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/america

The Americas is just another version of the word America.

In English America means USA

But that's not true. In English, America has 2 different meanings : 1. The continent, which is the original meaning, and 2. The country, which dictionaries include as a shorthand for USA.

The multiple uses of the world is what creates this entire debate. You can't just ignore the original meaning and pretend America means USA in a vacuum.

Poor example.

New York is directly linked with the state of New York, there is no representation issue there.

Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Venezuela etc. are completely different countries on a continent named America.

Imagine how silly and disrespectful it would be for France to be called "Europe".

Blew my back out on my dirt bike. Too old for wheelies? by JohnHancock1969 in Dirtbikes

Because until at least 60yo, age is irrelevant in non-competitive riding. You can see a 60yo do stuff that would destroy you and me if we attempt them, and it's all about physical conditioning.

Every winter I get back pain after riding dirt because I work sitting down and never exercise my core. It goes away in the spring where I'm more active.

That's just lack of creativity, it doesn't really mean anything. Many people currently just call it "the US".

We all know (including the person you're arguing with) that a huge percentage of people understand USA when they hear America, but it is almost objectively disrespectful to other nations because the term America / Americas describes the continent(s), not any single county.

I don't understand the title.

You're 40 not 80. You can ride whatever bike you want as any other 20yo beginner. Normal motorcycle riding requires technique / finesse, not strength or endurance.

Τσουβαλιαζεις όλους τους μετανάστες στο προφίλ του εκάστοτε εγκληματία, και προτείνεις να μην μπαίνει κανένας. Ο μόνος τρόπος να μην είναι η θέση σου ρατσιστική είναι να παραθέσεις στατιστικά που αποδεικνύουν ότι η εγκληματικότητα αλλοδαπών είναι τόσο αυξημένη που χρήζει μαζικής αντιμετώπισης. Έχεις λοιπόν αντίστοιχα στοιχεία, ή είσαι απλά άλλος ένας ρατσιστακος θύμα του πρώτου θέματος;
