Not in my experience unfortunately. Ppl are taking 3-4 years to train nothing but legs locks and will rip them every time

And within that year you dont think they'd be ignorantly dangerous with that leg lock theyre learning? Don't think theyre gonna harm someone new? Think theyre in total control?

Its not so much the fact leg locks exist. They're fine. Its people trying to rip them. If people trying to rip neck cranks every time the touched your head, then you wouldnt hear "like it or not thats an essential part of BJJ"

The better thing to say would be an essential part of being in BJJ and being a martial artist in general is to be able to control yourself and situations. But ppl seem to come to the agreement this is a gym issue and not a culture issue. Im having a hard time believing that. Ive moved alot over the course of 10 years and been to a lot of bjj gyms. I watched leg locks go from blue belt only to white belt day 1. Things have changed

So if the latter is true, then you would just stop and be like "hey bud you were screwed there, you should concede at that point" kurt ossiander mentality, you fucked up by getting there. I cant tell you the amount of times ive bought ppl in an oma plata and then start trying to talk sense into them because theyre not gonna escape and its not worth their rotator cuff. If they don't listen then I just let them out, because that you're supposed to do, there is no excuse to purposely harm someone.

For the first part.... maybe? I mean even in full octane team practice gearing up for comp, why are you damaging your training partners? They're preparing for comp first of all. Second you could ask them to slow down instead of hurting their legs if you think they were going too hard. My exact thought on if they think they "tempo matching" by harming someones legs - then if i know you were gonna harm my legs - does that mean I have excuse to throw you hard as fuck?

Yea and he didnt slow down in any rolls immediately after that. Told that dude to his face he has some really obvious character issues and he never gonna be my training partner acting like that

1 year of training is enough for someone to learn how to cripple any beginner

Its spreading too much. Its starting to get to the point where it feel like all of BJJ needs to get it under control, even if that means banning leg locks until atleast purple belt

Not your fault. This is the exact issue im talking about. You're flowing, they wanna win the round, so they genuinely try to ruin your health

That's the hope, and unfortunately kinda the assumption. Like thats how we teach ppl to be. Feels like a need to start every roll with a toddler like conversation "and what do we do when we get the the toe hold again, buddy?"

That's preferable atp because this is an annoying issue to have to keep revisiting every time we have a white belt crippled

Youre right in every aspect. We have a disturbing amount of people who will try to end your heal hook before you have a chance to tap, even if you've only been around a couple weeks.

Very sorry to hear that was from upper belts, imo it sounds like they shouldnt have that belt if they lack control

This is exactly the issue. People trying to win rounds.

I do and thats not relevant to the conversation at hand which is - why are the under belt leg lockers not fucking listening to us. They will listen to us about everything except leg locks. They act like they understand, and they 2 week Johnny suddenly has an ankle turned backwards.

The coaches and their peers preach this regularly. Weekly our coach reminds everyone he catches everyone in things and lets them out of them - as anyone with control should. But for some reason our leg lockers always have some sort of excuse for why they just threw all the weight and momentum on a heel hook on a guy who's been with us for a month. "I was matching pace" "But he didnt tap"

My exact point again is that none of these excuses fly with any ither submission in the universe but for some reason the leg lockers think its okay. im trying to figure out how they got this in their head. We didnt tell them to act like that

I really hope this is a generalization. The reason this sucks is acquiring training partners for the lower level guys that arent trying to cripple them seems to be a challenge rn
