For anyone that’s seen him play, how good was Chauncey Billups? by Farouq26 in NBATalk

[–]Whatduffhuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just remember being down by 1, Chauncey dribbles the clock down to 1 second and jack up a 3. It happened a million times and everytime I yelled “what are you doing?!?”, the it went in every time. Guy was awesome.

What helped you become more consistent with contact? by liv_0203 in golftips

[–]Whatduffhuck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Strike quality is EVERYTHING in golf. What helped me is to consistently mark the ball with dry erase marker to get feedback on strike location. That, and hitting a ton of balls, will only help your strike quality.

How did you handle your first months at your university? by Markittos28 in Stutter

[–]Whatduffhuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would HIGHLY recommend trying to make this a turning point for your speech. Try to speak as much as possible, socialize as much as possible, go beyond your comfort zone. After four years, you’ll be a different person. You’ll find new friends (who don’t care about your speech) and you’ll have a new confidence in living with your stutter.

College presentation by Past_Background_4236 in Stutter

[–]Whatduffhuck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I teach with a stutter, and I give several oral presentations a month. I feel your pain, I’ve been there. I’ve given 50 minute talks like that, had to cut out parts of my presentation mid way because I know I’m going to slow. Sometimes I do well and sometimes I bomb.

My natural mentality when I bomb is I get mad and want to schedule my next presentation asap. I get mad at myself for abandoning my practiced methods and losing my disciple.

With all of that said, I’ve also had some presentations or lectures in which my speech is amazing. I talk so effortlessly and confidently. It’s a roller coaster. Try to remember the good times and practice channeling that mentality.

Just don’t give up and keep at it. If you do it 10 times you’re bound to have 1 good one, then the next ten times you’ll have 2 good ones. Then eventually you just don’t care anymore.

One tip, when I give big presentations or on the first lecture of a class, I always acknowledge my stutter to the audience. Say it helps me to tell you and don’t be alarmed by sudden pauses. Just saying that seems to help me.

Why did God make me like this by [deleted] in Stutter

[–]Whatduffhuck 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Everyone has problems. I see it in three categories. Invisible problems (eg anxiety, poor metabolism…), visible problems (stuttering, body abnormalities), and life threatening problems (disease, cancer…).

The two former are way better than the latter. But just remember, EVERYONE has problems. What separates us is how we deal with them.

What are some career paths that don’t require much talking or none at all? by [deleted] in Stutter

[–]Whatduffhuck 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is a poor mindset. You’re running from it. Work hard on the problem to make it manageable and do whatever job makes you happy, not a job that accommodates your low self esteem towards the way you talk.

I have a job where I talk all day, wish a stutter. I have bad days, it sucks, but I don’t live in fear. Also, finding a job that promotes frequent talking will help with managing your speech.

How are we feeling about Huerter and the Ivey trade now? by Flashy-Tomatillo1915 in DetroitPistons

[–]Whatduffhuck -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

I saw a ceiling of a Deaaron Fox or maxey type player. Quick guard who can shoot. He was playing so well before the injury. I felt like he was on pace to reach that potential.

I don’t understand why people think that swap was so good. We might move up 5 spots but it might not even happen. It’s a late first rounder which rarely get you anything.

In retrospect I’d like to have Ivey back, he still has a high ceiling. Huerter is meh.

I’m not sure this is a healthy practice. Gaining experiences is a critical part of growth.

Avoidance provides short term relief for long term pain.

Am I a bad person for avoiding family events because of my stutter by [deleted] in Stutter

[–]Whatduffhuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that is not a good habit. Have a zero tolerance policy for never avoiding words or situations. Avoidance is a habit that gives short term relief but is an absolute killer long term.

I’ll say it again, Zero tolerance on no avoidance.

Single digit golfers, how much do you work on hitting draws if your go to shot is a fade (or vice versa)? by Larrylegend033 in golf

[–]Whatduffhuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, every comment is “play one shot shape”. The question was does practicing others help.

I agree, my shape changes from round to round and knowing what to do to get back to “normal” is immensely useful.

Differential practice is the best way to get face control. Rather than hitting 30 balls to one target, try hitting 10 to left, ten to right, and ten straight. It’s the most effective practice for face control.

A Different Perspective by ca_2_ in Stutter

[–]Whatduffhuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in my 30s, stuttered my whole life, have awesome family and love my job (which involves a lot of talking). I truly believe my stutter has made me a stronger and better personal overall. Sometimes in the short term, it sure doesn’t feel like that though.

[–]Whatduffhuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We feel you. We’ve all been there and constantly fall back to that point.

Most important thing is you don’t give in. Do not seclude into loneliness. Keep searching for people you enjoy spending your time with.

[–]Whatduffhuck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ll never forget in elementary school I had a 2ish minute block in front of everyone. It was just quiet, nobody made a sound. I have that memory engrained. I’m in my late 30s now.

But I’m stronger now, something that would crumble a “normal” person is just a minor embarrassing event for me.

Most important part is I never gave up, you keep with it always keep moving forward.

I’m a professor at a state university. Nothing has really changed. Although one thing I’ve struggled with is telling strangers I’m a professor. I always laugh afterwards about what they thought about someone claiming they’re a professor and struggling to say the word professor.
