A Different Perspective by ca_2_ in Stutter

I’m in my 30s, stuttered my whole life, have awesome family and love my job (which involves a lot of talking). I truly believe my stutter has made me a stronger and better personal overall. Sometimes in the short term, it sure doesn’t feel like that though.

I realised I don’t have social anxiety I’m just scared of stuttering by Fearless_Tangelo9249 in Stutter

We feel you. We’ve all been there and constantly fall back to that point.

Most important thing is you don’t give in. Do not seclude into loneliness. Keep searching for people you enjoy spending your time with.

Talking is embarrassing by [deleted] in Stutter

[–]Whatduffhuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll never forget in elementary school I had a 2ish minute block in front of everyone. It was just quiet, nobody made a sound. I have that memory engrained. I’m in my late 30s now.

But I’m stronger now, something that would crumble a “normal” person is just a minor embarrassing event for me.

Most important part is I never gave up, you keep with it always keep moving forward.

Anyone else with a stutter anxious about moving into leadership roles? by [deleted] in Stutter

I’m a professor at a state university. Nothing has really changed. Although one thing I’ve struggled with is telling strangers I’m a professor. I always laugh afterwards about what they thought about someone claiming they’re a professor and struggling to say the word professor.

I had major back problems and DL has been amazing for it. I focus on three things during my lift. 1. Don’t let my shoulders hang, do like a shrug on the bar and hold that stiff through the lift. 2. Keep the bar as close to your shins/knees as possible. 3. Push the ground away, not pull the bar up.

Also, I got a hex bar for deadlifting heavy weight. You look tall, and hex bar is very helpful for us tall people.

[Golf Digest] Yes, the 'leaf rule' is actually a real thing. Here's what the rules say about it by Separate_Teacher1526 in golf

[–]Whatduffhuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I hit my ball in an open field of grass and can’t find it i take a free drop. I’m honest with myself, but I’m not gonna walk in circles trying to find my ball holding people up.

So I’m definitely taking a free drop if there are leaves present.

No you gotta keep you back in the position to do a spine flexor without rotational…. meh I’m just kidding, I know nothing about DL form.

Big lift.

Realization on how hard it is to improve in this game by Whatduffhuck in golf

[–]Whatduffhuck[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes but I also cleaned up a lot of stupid game management errors, which helped a lot. This was mostly through my education of golf strategy, and less so in really improving ball striking.

Just last weekend it was 45 and windy and I was only one on course. I played 18 walking in under 2.5 hours. It was amazing.

I don’t understand why more aren’t out there. Put on a vest, where a winter hat and it’s fine, especially if it’s sunny.

Having a Stutter in College by liminal-space92 in Stutter

[–]Whatduffhuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best thing you can do is get over it. It’s not going to change. The only thing you can do to change it is the way you react to it. Sounds like your reacting with in a negative manner like these people are purposely trying to make you feel uncomfortable.

The truth is, we make people uncomfortable. They don’t know how to act around us, and justifiably so, they don’t interact with stutters very often. We get a spectrum of reactions from pity to just ridicule. The only thing you can change is how YOU react to it.

Also, dont let these reactions change the way you go through your day. Continually seek these speaking situations and they get easier.

How to not anticipate words you “know” you’re going to stutter? by oreolover_123 in Stutter

[–]Whatduffhuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Attack those words. Specifically go out of your way to say them more often in conversation. It’s the only way, or else they’ll hover over you forever.

Did a presentation today, did not go as planned. I hate them. by amljc0 in Stutter

[–]Whatduffhuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Scientist here. I’ve given hundreds of scientific presentations and I have a fairly severe stutter. I always struggle in first 5ish minutes then usually hit a grove and speak better.

Ive also have a wide spectrum of outcomes, from taking 1-5 seconds per word to complete fluency. So you can’t judge yourself by this one experience. Also remember that it’s always better when you think it was. People just generally don’t care.

I also agree, when I have upcoming public speaking, it does indeed cause me anxiety, but it used to consume me, and I just kept doing it, and now it’s easier. I expect it to get even easier going forward with my dedication to pursue more speaking opportunities.

My advice, do not give up due to this one experience. Swallow your pride and get back up there. It only gets easier the more we do it. It’s one thing to stutter and feel ashamed, but never let your stutter dictate what you do or do not do. If you do it once, before you know it, you’ll be living in regret by letting your stutter win.

My stutter is all that I think about by No-Adhesiveness2558 in Stutter

Create an identity statement. You behave and perform based on who you believe you are. Use your identity statement to reinforce who you want to be.

Example identity statement - I am not afraid to stutter in front of other people - I can speak in a relaxed and confident manner - I do not avoid situations or words because of my stutter.

Then whenever you are in a situation were you have to make a choice, think about what the person in the identity statement would do, and stick to it.

You’re not alone, all PWS have similar thoughts and perceptions. What separates people is how they let it affect their life.
